      @@SirWatchGeek So I bought this watch, and i love how it looks, and how everything feels maybe except the plastic caseback, but isn't the minutehand way too long? it extends all the way out to the tachymetre, covering the index haha

    Thank you. Your review helped me a lot in making decision to buy this watch. I just received it yesterday. All I can say is gorgeous! It looks 20 times more expensive than it is in real life. At first I worried that the dial would look cheap in plain white or bland silver, but is is not. The dial looks fantastic in creamy pearly milky white with a touch of silver. Pictures and videos don't do it justice. I strongly recommend for those who are still hesitate. Get the watch! You will be impressed like me.

    So useful! Thanks a lot mate! I was going to save up for a Hamilton intra-matic panda, but then I felt bothersome to be spending that much on a watch. Then I came across the Orient and that seems a bit overpriced now, but these are right up there with the great value! I’ll probably pick this up and spend the extra money to take my parents on vacation :) Keep it up!

    Honestly its an amazing watch for the price. Looks amazing on a black/grey stingray strap.

    Thanks for the great video! I thought that Seakos and Sugess were different companies. Interesting that there was branding for both in the box. I ordered a Panda dial that looks more like the original Seagull, but with silver indexes and the black sub-dials. Great value for these Seagull 1963 watches. It will be my 1st mechanical chronograph.

    First of all, great review!
    I was interested by this particular model as it seems to be the most conventional of the 1963’s.
    I would have liked solid hands instead of lume and a brush finish that could give more versatility.

    I've just found your site. Congratulations on all your subscriptions and I'm just adding myself to your list. I love your down-to-earth approach to reviewing. It's the best I have come across. Your light touch is so much better than that of some of the watch snobs you refer to. I love it!
    I also love the watch. I recently bought the most Chinese version which has no English markings at all. It really is beautiful and so is the Seagull movement, displayed so well at the back. As a Chinese military watch, its sits nicely alongside my bright red Vostok Komandirskie - another great but quite different piece.
    Finally, I also have the Steeldive Captain Willard that you are wearing. Mine is the bronze version and apart from a few problems with the crown, I love it. The Steeldive 'Submariner' homage watch is also incredible. I could never afford a Rolex or the like and I am very happy with watches in this, hugely cheaper, bracket. I wonder, as no doubt loads of others have, what will happen to the pricing of some of the big players, given the quality and price of these homages?
    Keep up the great work! I'm already looking forward to your next review.

    • @SirWatchGeek
      @SirWatchGeek  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Philip! That's incredibly kind of you to say good sir! I nearly bought the Chinese version, and I may still do actually 😄 and I'd also like another Vostok too - I think a Komandirskie is very tempting. How are you finding the bronze Steeldive? I've yet to be tempted by a bronze watch, has it paternated (is that the right word?) yet? or are you keeping it nice and shiny? I'm also tempted by the Sub homage! You've made some excellent choices there 😃👍.
      In terms of pricing, I don't think the big players are too worried. You only have to look at how scarce Rolex's are at the moment - such a huge waiting list!
      I've got huge back problems at the moment (I'm waiting news on a possible operation) which has dampened my enthusiasm - but I'll be back to posting more soon.
      Take care my friend! 😃👊

      @@SirWatchGeek Thanks for getting back to me - I really appreciate that. I am three months into the watch collecting obsession, so I have loads to learn and I am working through your reviews. My previous obsessions have included shoes and hats. I have recently had a drastic shoe cull, from 22 pairs to 19...
      From my experience with shoes, I am a great fan of patination, so I am letting my bronze Steeldive mature alongside its owner (who is over- mature). I am very, very pleased with the Steeldive Submariner homage. It's the one with the green face ( again, I refer you to the owner). It is beautifully made and the steel strap seems solid and doesn't rattle. I have had slight problems with both Steeldives which are about screwing down the crowns. I think I have got the hang of it now. From having seen the Pagani, in person, I think the Steeldive is definitely the better watch.
      My favourites, so far, are probably the Vostok and the 'Chinese' Seagull. Both seem to have loads of personality and solidness.
      My poshest watch is a bottom of the range Frederique Constant which was a present from my wife. It is probably the poshest I will get to and is beautiful. My plan is to concentrate on lower end watches that are quirky, well made and good to look at. Oh, and that work. I have already had two duds.
      I do hope your back improves and remember to keep moving, if you can. All the best and look after yourself. 😀👍

    • @SirWatchGeek
      @SirWatchGeek  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Philip! I've only been collecting for just over 2 years now, and I think I'm now up to 33 watches 😳😄. It certainly is an obsession!
      My Q&A video touched on why we collect things, it is just built in to us for some bizarre reason. I laughed out loud when you stated you'd cut your shoe collection down from 22 to 19 - you have a great sense of humour 😆. Fortunately, I've not been bitten by collecting anything else.....yet!
      Enjoy your collecting my friend. Keep in touch and let me know what you get next.

Not one single person in my comunity has asked what i got on my wrist since i became interested in whatches. Ok, my wife and kids are roling there eys in despaire for every new piece. I just received the 38mm version of this watch that I got during the 11.11 sale.
    Overall, it's beautiful and it's a nice watch for the price.
    However, one thing that is really bothering me, is that the chronometer hand doesn't line up with the 0 position (12 o'clock). It sits right in the middle of 0 and 1s.
    I mean, I get it, it's not the most expensive mechanical chronograph out there, and there are some things I can live with at this price point, but damn, if you are going to make a chronograph, better be sure that the chronograph hand lines up at 0, since the point of a chronograph is to record the exact time.
    Kinda bummed about this and I'm not really sure what to do, or if there even is something I can do. I know that shipping it back to China with tracking is not worth the cost...

    • @SirWatchGeek
      @SirWatchGeek  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahh that's such bad luck! If it's a smidgen off, that's one thing - but halfway between the 0 and 1 would be a bit too much for me too! This is one of those downsides of buying from China - as you say, is it worth the cost of sending it back to get it fixed? I'm not even sure how much a sympathetic watch repairer might charge to have a look at it. Very hard to look past it once you see it too 😕

      @@SirWatchGeek I've been playing with the watch and found something interesting.
      If I start the chronograph and stop it early, like at 5 or 10s, when I reset it the hand is in between the 0 and 1s mark as I mentioned before.
      If I stop it towards the end of the minute, at around 50 or 55s, then when I reset it, the hand is perfectly at 0s, so it seems like when the chronometer is stopped early, there is not enough inertia in the movement to put the hand back in place.
      I am not a watch expert, but this seems to indicate poor tolerances in the movement (which I would be somewhat OK given the price).
      What do you think?

    • @SirWatchGeek
      @SirWatchGeek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bdpf1744 Well, I've just done a bit of research myself! I filmed the chrono in operation in super slow motion - up to 26 seconds, the hand resets by traveling anti-clockwise. But at 27 seconds (and thereafter) the hand resets by traveling clockwise back to zero! I also noticed that when resetting, the hand carries on about 5 seconds the other way, before settling on zero. I don't know what this ultimately means to be honest in terms of why yours isn't zeroing properly every time! 🤷‍♂😄

I don’t really remember the rest of the technical details, I only just keep those comments in mind : )

    • @SirWatchGeek
      @SirWatchGeek  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've just been doing a bit of research 😄. I've lifted the following info from another website:
      "The Seagull ST19 may be the only choice currently for an affordable, fully mechanical chronograph movement, but it's also a great one regardless of what else is on the market. It boasts features that chronographs several times its cost don't have, while remaining a relatively dependable calibre.
      First, it's an integrated chronograph movement , meaning that the chronograph complication is built into the main timekeeping mechanism. It's the original, but also more complicated way to construct the movement. However, because it functions as a cohesive whole, an integrated chronograph calibre is easier to maintain and service. Other alternatives, such as the ETA 2894 and SII NE88, while both great movements, are modular. As the name indicates, the chronograph mechanism in these is a separate component attached to the top of the main timekeeping module. While this makes them easier to manufacture, the separate modules make operation a little more finicky and repairs much more difficult (thus expensive).
      Second, the ST19 sports a column wheel. It requires extremely precise tolerances, and is more labor-intensive to produce than the alternative cam-actuated method. But its great advantage is it allows for a smooth chronograph action. The popular Valjoux/ETA 7750, for example, is cam-actuated, but even though it is much more expensive, its pusher action is a lot more clunky than that of the ST19.
      Third, the ST19 has a long, rich history, beginning in 1961 when the Swiss movement manufacturer Venus (now defunct) sold its machinery, tooling, and blueprints for its 175 calibre to the Tianjin Watch Factory. The goal was to make Project 304, a watch for the Chinese Air Force. Thus, the ST19 is effectively the direct descendant of the Venus 175, with a few refinements added along the way (17 vs. 19 jewels, higher beat rate of 21,600 bph), and of course, now produced in a modern manufacture. Some express concerns about reliability, but many can be attributed to prejudices against anything made in East Asia (despite the fact that we're all reading this on the screen of highly-advanced technology made there). There's also the reality that chronographs are a great deal more complicated than conventional three-hand movements. By its nature, a chronograph needs more moving parts, thus requiring more maintenance-whether quartz, mechanical, Chinese or Swiss.
      Overall, the ST19 may just be the best bang-for-buck chronograph movement available on the market today. It's got the romance of being fully mechanical, with crisp action thanks to its column wheel. Its integrated construction makes maintenance relatively easy, and on top of that, we're doing all we can to make sure it lasts you for many years to come."
      😃👍

    • @9feetfrog
      @9feetfrog 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SirWatchGeek Very interesting, thanks for sharing.
      Here is what I copied from a review article:
      “The 21,600 vph movement was specifically designed with shock protection in mind.
      Without using chronograph features, the power reserve will last about 45 hours. Also, the caliber uses a column wheel, which is a design usually found on much pricier timepieces. This gives the pusher button a lighter feel.”

    Great video as always and congrats on the 1K. Love the Captain Willard, I've just bought the same watch and it's superb. I like the Seakoss/Sugess/Seagul and have been eyeing up the 1963 40mm but I also like the auto version with the ST1708 (I think?). Any views on this version?

      I have to say, I'm not familiar with that one at all. Going to do some research today! 😄

    Looks like the Pierre Paulin, which is itself a copy of the Breitling Premier B01

      @@SirWatchGeek after doing some research, it appears the Breitling came after the Hamilton Intramatic Chronograph H, which has a similar look. It's a tough one for me. I really don't like it when watches copy designs, but that is usually when the design isn't low-hanging fruit, I.e. when it isn't obvious. If a company puts out a watch that looks like the Seiko Willard, then they are taking a design which they would have never come up with themselves. But this piece seems to be too elemental for one brand to claim it for themselves.
      On a side note, I actually prefer the look of this piece compared to the Swiss. No-date is the way to go. The Chinese seem to get this.

    50.3 lug to lug sounds a but much for my 6.5" wrists. Maybe better off with the 38mm
