This is what a game of SKATE should be like! Everytime someone challenges me to a game, it's going to be everything, not just a game of lame flat fliptricks, but what you can do on a board regardless! It's about having fun and about learning new stuff all the time!
I totally agree, i think skate should be a bit more freely when it comes to doing tricks. But i disagree that Flip tricks are lame, i think a lot of practice comes from doing flip tricks constantly and precisely. You can also always distinguish peoples styles even in a simple kickflip.
Mike V. was one of my favorite skaters growing up and Chris Cole is my favorite skater as of now. both are great skaters...different styles and ...but Valley is an O.G... pro since 87 and he is 44 yrs old..Chris turned pro in 2000 and he is 32.....he was still in his dads balls when Mike started....different era..mike is the man the paradigm or street skating with out guys like that to lay the foundation...none of the other guys would exist...god i wish i skated that good at 40 plus years..they are both masters of their trade.....

The ref was making bullshit calls on Chris Cole's failed old school tricks... MikeV won after the first 12 tricks... the ref gave Chris Cole 2-3 bullshit calls and he'd had S-K-A already.... This was pitiful

One cannot simply view the history of skateboarding as a tree of interconnected trees branching out from the trick it derived from. There is a context as to why it evolves the way it does.
This goes back to my original comment which was that skateboarding shouldn't have rules in the first place. What is considered 'old school' now may come back, so what you want is actually more subjective. For example, pool skating and longboarding are very popular right now. As for what determines if a trick is landed or not, that is kinda implied in the word: you 'land' on the board and roll away. How many seconds you hold a handstand isn't the point unless you were having a length contest.
