  • In 1979 Tom Oberheim released the iconic OB-X synthesizer used by Rush, Prince, Queen and so so many more. GForce Software's OB-X recreation is the only officially endorsed plugin by Tom Oberheim himself. In this video I'll take you through all of the features and show you how to make your own sounds!

    Alex mentioned in the chat during the premiere that it also does MPE, which should be very cool to try. Going to give it a go today!

      Apparently Bitwig has a built-in surface controller if you have a touchscreen. But I’ve been using an iPad and Studiomux. Studiomux is free on the PC/Mac, but you have to pay $10 for the client on the iPad. I did also have to whitelist the Bonjour service for the private network on my PC. Then it worked. Bonjour comes with iTunes I believe.

      It’s a shame Hydrasynth isn’t a better MIDI controller. I tried it and it’s spotty. Not all the knobs send MIDI, and it’s a pain to get it working properly. Ended up going back to my Pro 2 for my MIDI needs because Sequential stuff sends all the front panel controls no problem.

    Pretty well everything you'd want in an OB-X, I think. The extra modules, macros and effects seem really useful, and of course, you can turn them off or ignore them if you just want a close emulation of the hardware. I recently got the Axxess plugin from GForce and the extras are great, but it can sound very authentic, too. Thanks for the demo.

    All GForce products are great. I first got hooked with GForce MTron Pro. GForce has a lot of great documentary videos on the history of synthesizers.
    Having the endorsement of Tom Oberheim for a software synth is a big deal.

      Dave Spiers of GForce is a cool guy. I watched a nice interview with him on the ProSynth Network TH-cam channel.
      I ended up getting a nice photo of me and Tom Oberheim at the 2022 Synthplex show in Burbank, CA. What the heck.
      I am mostly a guitar player with several vintage Martin 0-18's. Now with nothing better to do I have acquired a pile of synths including an OB-X8.

    02:21 would have been SWM if adjusted accordingly. Gforce are not the first ones cloning OBX. Sonic Projects from Switzerland receive that honor. OP-X, OP-X pro & OP-X-pro II. OPX already got released about 17 years ago & sounded pretty authentic. They also have some YT videos with comparisons with the real instrument. I do believe that the Gforce can create a pitch envelope. Given the appropriate destination, this could perhaps be possible with the first two faders on the second left control panel.

    Does OB-X support MPE (i.e. polyphonic aftertouch)? The earlier GForce OB-E VST supports it, but I haven't confirmed for OB-X. If so, you can do that CP-80/Oberheim Bladerunner cover that you've been considering.

    You need to get back at a Minimoog to rewind your thoughts about vintage synths having a dull(dark) sawtooth sound - that thing is raspy as hell :D
    and if you go even further back - the moog system 55 oscillators are able to reset their waveform cycle - means they sound almost always the same if you repeat to press a key (what people associate with digital but it was even a thing back then with old analogs)

    • @VultureCulture
      @VultureCulture  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I didn't say all vintage synths have a dull sawtooth sound, just the OB-X without the filter modulated more open.
      The Minimoog certainly is bright! Brighter than the Moog One for sure

    What is the problem with the unfortunate quality on the synth audio capture? This sounds grungy--not in a good way. Like some distortion got put on by mistake. Other videos don't have this problem and the demo plugin don't sound like this.

    • @VultureCulture
      @VultureCulture  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was an mp3 encoding issue in OBS unfortunately. TH-cam expects different mp3 quality rates depending on if you're livestreaming or not and since most of my content is livestreamed I had the resolution turned down.
      My apologies about the audio.

    At 11:40 it reveals the flaw all VST inherit, may it be synths or mixing tools: Modulated filter resonance in lower frequencies. Beside from other things like missing dimension and convincing LR-differences, and great low end punch. This VST is good in mimicing the tones but lacks all the small details and character that sets a vintage synth apart from the rest.
    I'm aware of merely 3 developers which are capable of coding good filter behavoir and only one of them, does it perfect, including dimension, keeping musicality during movement and convincing dual mono circuitry (tolerance differences).
    So, no more VST synths for me...until that developer releases his first synth, which possibly will happen next year.

      I'd like to see a comparison video of the new OB-X VST against both an OB-X keyboard, and the new OB-X8 keyboard.
      Many people say the new OB-X8 keyboard doesn't perfectly match an original OB-X, but it sounds great to me from what I've heard out of it in videos. The real question is, how does the new VST compare with the OB-X8 keyboard that some of us might be considering buying? Another factor of importance is the programming. The OB-X8 includes 700 factory presets of the OB-X, OB-Xa & OB-8. Will these same presets be ported over to the OB-X VST? And do the Xa & 8 models offer any significant features missing on the OB-X VST, which is modeled after only the OB-X keyboard (but said to have added features) ?
      The great thing about the OP-X II Pro is the programming. Many great patches are included, even if the VST isn't as good or faithful. For this new official OB-X VST to really be of great use to many of us, the sound design of the patches available for it also need to be great.

      Pulsar Modular will publish its synth ZORBA next year, and after that one the complete reworked P900 Moog modular system. Their tools are incredible, you'll have to try them - as a hardware enthusiast, you´ll immediately recognize the quality.
