Van Halen's 1984 & Jump Covered on Oberheim OB-8

  • First I play "1984" on the OB-8 and then "Jump" along with the original song's stems. The ending I crafted is modeled after how they performed the song live on the 1984 tour. (Check out Jump + Montreal on youtube and you can see my inspiration.) I did this by editing together individual drum hits, guitar and bass parts from the split stems and other Van Halen songs.
    Update: Some people were asking if I could upload a version with just the keyboard I played and no backing track. Here you go!
    • Van Halen - Jump - Key...
    After living with the video for a while, I decided I could do a lot better version, so I re-recorded Jump, but synced it to the original video. This version isn't public, but I prefer it to my first version. 1984 is the same performance, but mixed a bit better:

      Eddie was a big fan of Pete Townshend, who came up with quite a few great synth riffs as well. Baba O’Riley, Won’t Get Fooled Again, and Who Are You being just a few.

    I saw a video where they said Eddie had written the music notes about 2 years before he turned the tune over to David Lee Roth to write lyrics for it. The guy in the video said that Roth sat in the back seat of a convertible with his bare feet propped up on the seat in front of him, out on a beach somewhere, listening to a cassette tape of Eddie's tune. It turned out to be one of their biggest hits.

    • @innnews6299
      @innnews6299 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      This is ALSO the reason why the original VAN HALEN was so special: Eddie Van Halen’s unique melodies COMBINED with David Lee Roth’s playful lyrics.

    • @danielfisch389
      @danielfisch389 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Eddie had also said that Roth and producer Ted Templeman had objected against him playing synths for years, because they wanted him to be seen exclusively as the guitar god by their fans, and not as some keyboard player. Though he had sometimes used synths and a Wurlitzer before 1984 in a less prominent way, it was that album that featured synth-driven songs like 1984, Jump and I‘ll wait.

    Never had an Oberheim anything (I had a well-loved Poly-6 just for this song), but I got to play this song live with my then-band way back in the early 90s in front of over 5000 high school classmates in our first of many performances and a few concerts. Opening song, wrote a bit of an intro piece, nothing like what you've got here but it worked for the build-up. I was first out on the stage, lights out, and as I played my intro piece the spotlight slowly came up on me. The rest of the band slowly made their way out onto the still blackened stage. Those opening few notes of GMaj to 2nd Inv CMaj are electrifying. I still remember the moment before we were set to go on and our lead singer said, "this moment that's about to happen, is better than sex". I hadn't gotten that far with a girl yet in my young life but he was not far wrong. It stays with me, that entire concert and it was a defining life experience.

    Strange when your own era of music stars pass away. All the magic of their unique sounds will ripple down throughout time. Their original hits will largely dissolve with us, the fans, when our time comes. It is the way of things, it seems.
    Wouldn’t it be great if the man himself saw this most excellent cover prior to his passing?

    • @radosawwalkowski5824
      @radosawwalkowski5824 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't think this music will dissolve, I'm from the gen X and I only listen to rock and metal music and I prefer 70s and 80s. I guess it will be like classical music for us now

    • @BradPham
      @BradPham 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@radosawwalkowski5824 Some folks are guided to fine collections of music from decades past. You are why the songs dissolve but don’t disappear entirely.
      An analogy to classical music is fair but I reckon rock music, by its nature, doesn’t seek to be thought of as something that will last forever. There is something impulsive about rock that requires you to “have been there” to get the most out of it. And it is quite a lot you are exposed to at a visceral rock show. Even through the haze of booze & cigarette smoke (showing my age), you recall that something electrifying occurred to all present.
      I went on a tangent there.
      Listen to what you enjoy, play what you enjoy, & occasionally try stuff you wouldn’t normally listen to.

    Awesome cover, man!! That gave me chills, seriously! I have been playing keyboards for years and I have owned a number of synths but I have never owned an Oberheim, and the three or four synths I have always wanted to own are an Oberheim OB-Xa/OB-X, a Roland Jupiter 8, or a Yamaha DX-7. I did purchase a vintage Yamaha DX-11 when I was living in Oregon, but had to sell it before moving to Ohio.

    I was actually looking for a cover of 1984, but very nice you did Jump right after 1984 👏🏼😊
    Imo these 2 tracks belong to each other like Eddie belongs to the guitar and synth.
    I always play 1984 and Jump right after each other in my car with the volume up! 😁
    This results in the car moving faster because of the energy of Jump!

    • @Incog2k6
      @Incog2k6 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, as the user above me pointed out, EVH was a trained pianist, so he definitely had to learn Bach pieces, and anyone who has to listen to Bach DOES become a fan. Plus, it's obvious in his guitar playing anyway. Whenever he tapped, it sounded like a Bach piece.

    • @jameslewis8227
