It becomes their song to do what they want with. Record labels are definitely recommended for people who don’t have experience running a business. If you can run a business there is no reason to sign to a label. Unless you care about fame. They can put you on a pedestal!

For example the only reason Toni Braxton wasn’t making money early in her career is because Babyface was the one solely writing and producing; Toni had no input on neither one. Plus her contract wasn’t set up in a way where she was going to get much royalties or publishing. TLC suffered from this as well. Being that it was 3 of them, any money generated was going to have to be split, and they did not have a lot of input in the material that helped blow them up. Even their 2nd biggest hit “No Scrubs” was written by the R&B group Xscape.

I think it's too late to gatekeep our music, they should have done it from the very start, however Black Artists need to start asking for everything, publishing, royalties, writing credits etc. Make sure they get paid for their work, these songs will be earning money until the end of time. As someone who has worked in this industry for almost 20 years, the real problem is with her management, they are the ones who negotiate ownership, royalties, etc… The artist either agrees or not. They had to to sign off on the work before it comes out, everything is contracted and approved by both sides lawyers. Saying business is bad after it’s done is a further example of bad business.
The real problem is the music industry in general. Its inheritly predatory. Authentic voices shouldn't be bought and masked for marketability. Those not in the space should connect w the space they wish to profit in and present themselves honestly. The only reason legal representation is bad and what not is because the industry is attention and profit driven so with so many trying to take advantage of you its hard to do things the right way.

The real problem is the music industry in general. Its inheritly predatory. Authentic voices shouldn't be bought and masked for marketability. Those not in the space should connect w the space they wish to profit in and present themselves honestly. The only reason legal representation is bad and what not is because the industry is attention and profit driven so with so many trying to take advantage of you its hard to do things the right way.
