I used a DIY version of this a few years to take down a UFO, we still have the aliens at my parents farm. They’re excellent field hands, very hard workers. Only issue is they keep trying to phone home.
Some drones have a return to home mode, so id they lose connection, do they head back to their starting position until the receive signal or do they just, as you said, fly aimlessly until they crash.
With no guidance, the drone only knows its height (if it has a pressure sensor) and/or direction (if it has a magnetic sensor not being affected). All other guidance is basically scrambled.
Some of these systems also jam GPS signal. Got to play with some myself back in 2020. If you have the right system, you can scramble the GPS reception and drones will just set straight down.
So, a common weapon used against a drone in certain battlefields is what’s called spoofing. If a signal is able to be found and connected to, a matching code to redirect a platform can be used to misdirect to another location in the “return home” feature.
