I listen to our beautiful heart and soul warming Anglican chants and just wonder what really made us change. These chants make me feel like I'm in heaven
As the singing of these Psalms dwindled so has wickedness, selfishness and evil vices heightened and multiplied. Peace and joy leaving mankind. 🙏 Thanks for posting these.....i find all i need in Theology in them.
I’m from Rwanda, whenever I hear these chants i remember that this Would is not my home but our choirs use contemporary music accompanied by drums, piano and guitar I’m studying music to uphold the glorious Anglican heritage
I just came upon these chants by Guildford Cathedral and I found them so inspiring . I made them part of my daily listening to soothe my thoughts and mind after a restless day.
I have NO idea why I am commenting as Nelson Sumbane, when in fact I am Peter Black! I am Cathedral Organist and Choirmaster at Kimberley Cathedral in South Africa. I will be playing Guildford's recording of Psalm 27 to my Choir this week as an example of thoughtful and beautifully shaped psalm singing. How wonderful that we have this resource!
+Peter Thank you for leading others into beauty and majesty. You are an example of how to decide (Kierkegaard said that there is 'power' in a decision) to bring into our world the best that is. Art is art when it 'ennobles,' (Aristotle). Thank you for being part of that great heritage that lifts into light. There is a truth in it that is nowhere else.
We would love to receive a donation of any recordings of Kimberley Cathedral Choir that you may have. We have none at all in our Archive at the moment. Our website is arechmus.org
Oh God, our Father, we thank and praise you for such soul and mind uplifting music. If this comes from mere mortals we wonder how it would be like if angels were the performers.
Still the best choir in England ever, which means the best anywhere :-) Ps 130 takes my breath away every time I hear it, ...and it isn't even a double chant.
I hope you don't mind sharing the title of Best Choir with King's College (Cambridge). Because there's no tiebreaker. KCC and GCC are co-champions, like what happened in the national spelling bee a couple of times. Speaking of spelling, I f-e-r-v-e-n-t-l-y (fervent is my favorite word) love traditional English choral and organ music.
Thank you for posting this splendid resource for me to discover and learn from. If you can, please develop this teaching so that we can learn this beautiful sung versions, please put links so that we can move to them quickly - I like to use psalms in my private daily devotions, especially the short holy psalms such as Psalm 8 Psalm 23 Psalm 100, and I would like to sing them according to this holy melodies. Thank you and God bless you for this gift amen
I am not very musical but have been attending a church which is one of the few left that has a non-choral, sung Evensong, where the congregation sings the service from a pointing sheet. (Sadly rarely attended by more than a dozen or so). I have been listening to these videos to pick up some of the tunes and phrasing.
+Londonfogey Bear in mind that the pointing used at Guildford at the time these recordings were made was that of the old St Paul's Cathedral psalter, which may not coincide with the point used at your church today.
No choir at your Evensong? That's too bad. Evensong is not the same without a choir. I know because I've attended lots of Evensong services (before COVID).
This is why I love the Anglican Church so much. IMO the Anglican chants run rings around RC Church chants. After I listen to your playlist, I'm also looking for a video of psalm 84 (set to music by Jerome Webster Meachem). Do you know of any? Can you find a TH-cam video of it for me, please? Thank you in advance.
It's true that not every performance reaches perfection but these are "live" recordings. There are even occasional mistakes (!) that can't be edited out, as they would be for a commercial recording. But the point of this archive is to present an accurate picture of how it really was from day to day.
totally accept that. this is the highest quality of musicianship you're going to find, recorded or not. more: but for the precision herein, wouldn't have had the early music brigade (albeit they wrongly thought their performance was a reaction to this - in fact, a continuation). which matters.
That's a perceptive remark, considering the personnel involved. There was some "crossover" - one of Alfred Deller's sons was a bass at Guildford in those days and one of the tenors, Robin Doveton, was also a member of The Scholars, whose repertoire included "early music". And Barry used to share a flat with Bruno Turner... (Or so he claims!)
I presume that the building in the background of the picture is a church... But I lived too long on the prairies of Canada and I see a grain elevator...
+Suila2007 Always planning; not always actually doing. But there are many more in the archives, so it's a question of finding the time to digitize and process them.
I Rev Samuel from St Michaels and All Angels Cathedral, in Durgapur ,India , WestBengal close to Calcutta.this is new Cathedral inaugurated in 2014 . We need various help . I will be grateful if people can come and give help.

Just Beautiful. I wish we still chanted our psalms like this. It's quickly becoming a lost art form.
+Minnie Mouse Thank you!
Oh how I love these psalms I'm bless praise God halliula amen
oh! I miss the Anglican choir practice of my youth!
+Mike Ugorji You may not be entirely alone there.
+ArchivesofSound fond memories indeed
I have been listening to this for years, but just noticed how beautifully the Gloria is sung after each psalm and not just an after thought.
These Chants makes you feel you are in a different world entirely with no problems. Very soul lifting and enriching in spirits.
Thank you.

The flavors of Psalms is in the chanting. I'm captivated with psalms chantings.
Beautiful 😘 Beautiful 💝
Praise God!! Hallelujah!!!
The rendition is absolutely amazing, spirit lifting and heavenly.
Thank you!
Love my Anglican chants👏
I love the sound of the all-male English cathedral choirs…….
It's the reason I became an Anglophile. I've been an Anglophile since 1994/95.
This is beautiful, and thanks a bunch for posting these chants.
You're welcome!
Thanks a lot for sharing!
Suila2007 You're welcome!
BTW, I was baptized in the RC Church and left it twelve years ago. I prefer the Anglican/Episcopal Church.

Welcome, Peter! (or whoever TH-cam has decided you may be) And thank you for your kind words.
Hi Mr Black. How are you doing?Hope u remember me.I was chorister at St.Mary's cathedral when u were the choirmaster there .
When in South Africa, Nelson is a perfect alias. Sumbane could be a misspelling of sun-burnt, seeing you are not actually black.

...this brings back happy memories of attending Choral Evensong at Lichfield Cathedral back in the 1980s. Thank you for posting.
+Louise Restall Excellent! That's one of the purposes of this channel. Glad you enjoyed it.

+mastercaroline23 Glad you appreciated it.
Nice voices on the chants
RANDOM ORDER MAKES THE WHOLE THING EVEN MORE INTERESTING!
Funnily I disagree with the sentiment, but I love your enthusiasm for it
Thank you for this channel. Utterly relaxing.
We're delighted you find it so. Please come back often!
Beautiful chant.
Awesome.

@@grievinggeekclairedixon3445 I'd argue in favour of St John's under Guest. The psalm reading of that era was _otherworldly_

Hello to all of our English and British friends, please DO save this, and make it last!...
great
Took me to the Spirit world!

Heaven!
Beautiful. Is it possible to post a play list of the Psalm numbers and composers?
They are all there, in the Description box below the video graphic.
Thank you
Nice collection. if you could add the lyrics that would be great
You can find them in THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER
some roughness there but barry rose is a staggering musician. as of course, are the boys here. just absurd quality - this matters

🤔What's absurd about it? That remark is confusing. Can you explain?🤔
Help me to learn
The psalms are listed in the Description box, together with the composers of the chants
I presume that the building in the background of the picture is a church... But I lived too long on the prairies of Canada and I see a grain elevator...
We always thought of it as "neo-gothic factory".
@@ArchivesofSound
Like your sense of humour😂
A grain elevator near a church? That's jarring.
This is spirit and soul renewing in this generation of polluting and compromising values
Are you planning more uploads?

We still do it in Sierra Leone . So exhilarating.
