(The famous “gold disc” LP is reproduced here almost in its entirety - but not quite, because the copyright holders have blocked two of the tracks in some countries. This upload omits those tracks. The full version - which can only be viewed in the UK - is available at • “Christmas Carols from... . A re-released version of the original LP did appear briefly in audio cassette format but it has never been released as a CD, and clean vinyl copies can be hard to find. Uploaded to ArchivesofSound under the terms of Warners’s agreement with TH-cam [www.wmgmusiclicensing.com/WMGM...] and as an important part of the sound archive of Guildford Cathedral Choir. EMI, who made the original recording under the Music for Pleasure label, played a pivotal role in the early development of the choir. Originally issued under catalogue number MFP 1104 in 1966, this LP was re-issued in 1976 with a new cover photo (pictured here) and revised sleeve notes. For the new cover, EMI used a professional child model, which was a pity because a Guildford chorister would have known which way round to wear his cassock...)

What a delight to accidentally see this wonderful album again after searching over the years on TH-cam for it. It was like everyone has forgotten the Xmas carols recorded by the Guildford Cathedral in the early sixties. My subjective nostalgia keeps telling me it is the best Xmas carols ever.

You are right sir, I remember when we are very young, it came in cassette, and anytime it's Christmas time, and we realize that the tape, is bad, my Mum, will quickly go and get another one. I have also been searching for it for long.

At this year 1988 89 90s when I was still a kid my late precious mother used to play this Christmas carols song as old record so I had look for this song on TH-cam through my mom old record .....2020 / 27 /12 oh memory it bring me joy and tears

I grew up in listening to these Christmas carols at home, in Church, in departmental stores, in taxis etc once November starts. In recent times I only hear them at Night of nine lessons and carols! I am here on Nov 1 2022 to reinvent the past past listening to these Heavenly tunes. Wishing you all a very REFLECTIVE Christmas. I found this lp today on Christmas day. It was a part of my childhood, and i feel so emotional. I'm in awe of the greatness of Christmas; Its message remains the same yesterday, today and forever. Thanks for this.
I remember this lp record when I was little in Lagos Nigeria. My dad always start to play this record about 4wks before christmas. The best carols still. The music always created a unique atmosphere at Christmas season. Unfortunately it has faded these days. So glad to see it here. What nostalgia! Next to this is that of the Gunter Kallaman Choir. It seems in the 60's they sang with their hearts.

Nostalgia...it's 10-12-2021. 8 days to my 38th birthday.
I was totally inspired today listening to this recording. This is truly some of the most beautiful and creative hymn singing I have ever heard. No two stanzas are sung alike, and the arrangement of each stanza magically compliments the text. This is how hymns should always be sung!

May God bless the person that uploaded this music, and more especially those Angelic humans that sang the music with their conductor. See how the Church neglect has brought this catastrophe to the things of God by the worldly music companies that produced them for profit and possesses full right over Church music like this that has the powers to bring the listener to God. This music drew me to God when I first heard them about 42 years ago when I was only 12 years old. I ordered for the LP and got it through Amazon but some tracks are cracked and I couldn't get the CD version.. Any time I want to tune my mind to heavenly mindedness I visits TH-cam and listen and meditate. Thanks to God and the person that uploaded this music again.

This LP has never been released on CD, and the copyright holders have blocked the full LP on TH-cam for listeners in the USA, which they have every right to do. However, listeners in Europe and the UK *can* hear it in full (via a different upload on this channel).

I appreciate your humility on not considering yourselves as Angelic but many of us that God used your music to touch our lives knew that their is something extra ordinary dwelling within your lived when you sang this carols, There are many versions of the titles on this album but your version is evergreen, the more one listens the more he/she develop interest to listen more. I normally enjoys heavenly atmosphere during those days when I was less sinful any time I hears this music. In fact I ordered the LP twice and converted it to CD for my personal use but they are noisy and not with clean sound as this one on TH-cam. Imagine me living in Nigeria to order for this music twice, one LP from UK and the other from US shows that this music is a gem to me,

Thank you, thank you!! Finding this made me so happy. I have been looking for this LP for years. My parents got it from a friend almost 40 years ago and I was mesmerized. I bought the cassette in 1991 but it is completely worn out. I have a lot of christmas carol albums with other choirs but it's just not the same. A Merry, Merry Christmas to You!!

outstanding xmas album - even with the missing tracks...ha
I'm an atheist but this takes me back to happier times growing up with my mam and dad and brothers and sisters, we're all apart now and some have passed but it still gives me the chills and makes me want to go back to those times. Christmas of the past were the best.
I say this in all humility; in these old Christmas songs; in those long ago happy times spent with our parents, siblings and grandparents; in the child who once lay in a cattle feeding trough - and who thirty years later was executed naked on a cross, but whom death could not hold in its grasp - is found the meaning of our life, and our reason to live with immense hope.
May he, Jesus the Nazarene, our Emmanuel, embrace you and your family with his love - this Christmas, throughout 2023 and always. 🌟

The original LP sold so many copies that on 10 December 1966 it entered the official pop album charts, where it spent five weeks and reached number 24. The album later went “gold” and, later still, “platinum”. No other cathedral choir has ever featured in the pop album charts, unless you count Winchester, who provided the chorus for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Requiem” in 1985. By contrast, King’s College Cambridge didn’t feature in the album charts until 2008.

This is Christmas music at its very richest. Thank you so much for sharing and restoring my faith in life and goodness. Had Putin and his regime, listened to this type of joyous music, surely they would never have degenerated into the depraved inhumanity they find themselves in now to their fellow man. PS I have only just noticed that this was recorded back in 1966 [I had originally thought it was from 2015]. All those who were then young choristers will now be elderly men in their 60s [also my age]. I wonder if any of them have still got copies and play it to their grandchildren at Christmas?
Stunningly beautiful. This must have been one of the finest treble lines of its era. Thank you so much for the upload. Interesting that no descants (save for the single one of BR's own) were used, although the green C4C had been out for several years by 1966.

where do I play that kind of LP. its hard to find Tapes here not to talk of LP. CD/DVD players only is available in Nigeria. No one uses turn table here anymore

I have a british CD at home which dates back to the 80s/90s that features nearly all of the Guilford christmas carols and as a child I probably worn out that CD because of how many times I've listened to it (and I also learnt them by heart on the organ). Listening to this video I discovered 1 new carol that I didn't hear before: "as with gladness men of old". Once listened carefully I went to the keyboard and tried it out and as with a bit of practice I could play it perfectly. It probably is one of my favourite ones.

Great carols. I had this L P all those years ago giving me so much pleasure and still does. I really loved the three part harmonies. Great organ playing using lots of power on the final verses very impressive.
Its the way they do it for Lessons and Carols, so the congregation may join the choir for the end of each carol. The one that gives me shivers every time is Adeste Fideles.
Hey, it's very similar to the church I attend in...some state on the East Coast. I wish I had been raised Episcopalian instead of Catholic, I'm THAT much of an Anglophile. No English blood in me, but my heart, mind, and soul are English. Sir David would be impressed, if he were still alive. It was his music that made an Anglophile out of me in 1994.( His descants in O Little Town of Bethlehem, Puer Nobis Nascitur, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, and The First Nowell.) Of course I don't listen to all of them year-round, just O Little Town of Bethlehem. FOREST GREEN is like heaven and earth coming together. (Another TH-cam viewer said that about the King's College Choir and the Guildford Cathedral Choir. He or she and I are in complete agreement!) And no, the Cathedral is neither dim nor dark...you are so right. Thanks!
Remember that both Silent Night and O come All ye Faithful, at least, are from the Catholic tradition, one from Austria and the other one (Adeste Fideles) may be from Portugal. Just saying..
