You're a lucky guy. Ours have no instinct, so we let our barred rock look after a few warm Pekin eggs when she became broody. Now we're thinking we might want to make our next chicken a Cochin or a Silky because they brood really well and they don't mind adopting. And you earned a like, it was a great presentation.
I plan on raising ducks and this was a great video. Thanks and will be watching your other videos. Btw you and your misses have a piece of paradise there 😊
+Marie Many Hi Marie, best of luck with your duck raising! I find them fun animals to keep and really enjoy watching them waddle around doing what they do... Cheers :)
+dirtpatcheaven Hi and thank you! I love Muscovy ducks we feed them down our local lake some are huge but I've never actually kept any myself yet - I'm thinking I should get a few... Cheers :)
4godliv That's interesting also but I have had trouble with my ducks eating the sides of our pond - however, the bottom does seem to have settled probably due to the droppings yes.
Birth is definitely an amazing thing. I had 2 homebirths! They are adorable. I love how you care enough to bring the mom and babies over together. Hospitals don't care about human moms with their baby that much!
+Lulu Barretta Congratulations on your homebirths. Yes it's surely a wonder of nature and the reason we are all here so kind of important lol... Cheers :)
Thanks for the info. Should I provide an area of hay outside the pen as well as inside the pen as an option for her to have as a nest? If she lays eggs outside the pen it will not be safe at night. Can I move her and the eggs inside her pen?
Mate, if this was twenty years ago your show would come on right after Bob Ross and This Old House. When I get my property I’m going to be self sufficient.
I've got a question: my pekin drake is starting to sit on the eggs but the female isn't broody nor does she sit on them, is it possible that he's trying to hatch them or is he just guarding them?
@@T0YCHEST he was keeping them warm until the female returned. But he was easily scared whenever I got too close. Since then my pekin duck went broody three times but my muscovy duck took over the job since the pekin was a bad mother
That was so nice. I think I'll stick with chickens. Do you eat the ducks? My dad had a mallard duck and a Canadian goose head up on the wall like trophys. I guess we ate them. Back in the 60's.
Hello I have a question I have pekinska a duck and a Drake blue favorite ducks here 9 months I wanted and she sat on the eggs just like to make a duck sat on eggs for 5 egg is, it looks walks into the nest covering the eggs with hay toist hides and goes and at night she only sleeps with them and morning and afternoon walks but not getting what to do so she sat on the eggs?
Can I collect my pekin's eggs, and then after I have a large clutch of 12 or more can I place back in her nesting area? Will she sit on them? My 2 female pekins will be 2 year's old this August. I had let them get a large clutch last summer, but neither of the 2 girls sat on them. Our male Rouen would roll and rearrange the eggs, but the females wouldn't sit on them.
I've only heard of one peking duck who set the full term and raised her brood to weaning age. Don't even know if she was full peking to be honest. I'd keep her babies for replacements! LOVE your isolation pens.
+quailjailss I have heard this is rare also and only one of my pekin ducks sit so perhaps she's a one-off in my flock as well... I'll be keeping a few females from this hatching to see if they have the same trait as mum (fingers crossed). Those pens are actually flat packed dog kennels which I modified by tacking on snake proof mesh and making a border around the base with pine sleepers screwed together - they work really well! Thank you and cheers :)
+Self Sufficient Me how embarrassing, I truly thought you spelled it "peking" and not pekin. Ha! Anyway, ill cross my fingers for you as well! I think her daughters will inherit their dad's genes though, not the mothers. If I'm not mistaken (and if that makes any sense...) So the best way to get you a flock of "broody" pekins would be to keep one of her sons and breed back to her (and all those females *should carry that broody gene). Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong. Please keep making poultry vids in the future. I love to see them!
quailjailss Yes Pekin not Peking but I still make that error sometimes LOL I never knew that about the daughters inheriting the dad's genes that's quite in depth and something I wouldn't have thought about but I'm glad you mentioned it! Thanks :)
I have a Philippine Duck and I just wanted to know if it is ok to feed it the duck feed that I bought because when I looked it up on google they most likely feed on rice or rice with chopped shrimp. So is it still good for me to feed it the duck food i bought??
+MsTokies Hi, do you mean like a chicken tractor? That would probably work well in an area with space and pretty flat terrain but not for my place. Cheers :)
I don't have any pekin ducks but I had some Roens and some Buffs . I just lost one last night with no signs of any blood or anything. just dead in the pen. The other Roen got taken by a coyote one dawn. sigh. It is very disheartening some times. Love to have a broody hen.
+Susan Thompson They only have small hearts so sometimes they simply die suddenly and it can be quite natural but I can sympathise with you about birds being taken by coyote as I've lost them to foxes and dogs - it's not very nice at all. Cheers :)
May I ask? If a duck will still brood her eggs if you move their location? I want to move her eggs and her, beacause the location she picked to brood is not safe.
Hey sir, I wanna ask you a question. How to knew the sex of vigova ducks.I have 2 vigova ducks.Donot knew what sex.But it layed an egg yesterday. Will it hatch it?Please answer
Hi Mark Thanks for the informative video, really great stuff. We've just re-homed a collection of ducks. They are settling in and have made a communal nest in the yard, they started laying together and one female seemed to be spending more time on the nest.......however, night comes and the squad all retreat into their shed leaving the nest free throughout. Then next day the interest is back and she spends more time on the nest. Is this an inexperienced duck and any advise on how to encourage constant sitting? Thanks Mate Niall
Hi Niall, that's a great story and thanks for sharing. Yes, I would say she is an inexperienced duck and even though it is natural for ducks to sometimes leave the nest for several hours at a time it's not good for the eggs to be without warmth overnight. Perhaps, move the nest into the shed hopefully this will encourage her to sit on it there and then say on the nest a night. Alternatively, build a small shelter egg laying box off or nearby the shed and place the eggs into that in the hope she and the other layers gets the hint. Cheers :)
I have two mallard hybrid ducks. One male, one female. The females laid some eggs and then just left. I doubt the eggs are fertile anyway, but it still worries me.
Ducks can be unreliable like that unfortunately... This happens to me quite a bit with a duck sitting on eggs for several days or longer then losing interest. Not much we can do about it. :)
I just found your channel. I raise four Pekin ducks on my farm in Oregon. I love to watch the ducks. Thanks for this information.

It might be time you add "Flixzone" to the list on the community page mate. 😉
Hope all's well with you & the family. 👍👍

THANK YOU, this video is the most helpful video I have found,my duck is collecting eggs
That's amazing. a death on the last video and a birth on the next. That's the circle of life for you!! love what your doing
Wow, that was awesome to see. They grow so fast. You are so right, all babies are so cute! Janice
+jksatte Hi Janice and thank you! Yes they certainly do grow fast - it really is amazing... Cheers :)
I love all of these videos, but the ones with the critters are so cool
Outstanding! I love this one, well, I love all of them, but I enjoyed this one very much, and learned a lot too! Bless, Sheila
I love your brooding pen. Was it purchased that way or did you custom build this?
Very informative channel. Thank you for sharing.
What a lovely video with all the stages of growth.
AMAZING video!!! I have only been able to get muscovy's to do a good job brooding!
+dirtpatcheaven Hey, I need to get muscovy ducks eventually. How did they do with the brooding?
+dirtpatcheaven Hi and thank you! I love Muscovy ducks we feed them down our local lake some are huge but I've never actually kept any myself yet - I'm thinking I should get a few... Cheers :)
+4godliv I have heard Muscovy ducks are the best sitters.
Self Sufficient Me We also read that they will help "settle" the bottom and sides of our new pond, with their droppings and how they sift the mud?

Thank you for sharing your ideas...may god bless you more blessings.

Another great video, I might keep ducks if I get a chance.
Excellent how to video, thanks for sharing!
+4godliv Thank you very much! Cheers :)
Such beautiful birds. Have you replaced your birds yet after the fox attack?
I have loved your info on your videos.Thank you.
Let me know if u r ever visiting Ontario Canada so I can see u...we will have a lot to chat about😊
hello I saw your video and it seemed interesting to me and I wanted to ask you why my duck does not eat :(

love it! here in the UK I don’t have to worry about snakes getting at my ducklings tho!
Fantastic video

I'm not sure sorry. I feed our ducks commercial duck or chicken feed from a good poultry supplies retailer.
Thank you for this video. We have a mama pekin duck sitting on her clutch of eggs in the duck house, "Quack Shack". They could hatch any day.
How did you made them broody
@@muhammadasadamjad9988 They just were.
Can I do the same with my muscovies?
Within the first 5 seconds of hearing him talk I could tell he was an Aussie 😂
Great job mate.
I have brought some fertile eggs .... how can I encourage my female to sit on them ???? Please help
have you ever thought of tractors the ducklings and mother? after she is done sitting on her eggs or is that to much of a disturbance ?

hii ihave pekin duck they are not layingg eggs what can I do for that
We give ours a little cat food for they get the extra protein in the winter and they lay throughout the winter.
We don't get many predators of ducks in europe, the only threat to them are themselves or foxes
My duck is currently laying eggs.
