Brent 'Breadboy' Dreher....cause I'm great with dough/numbers/money/bread (and also because it's a shortened version of my name (BREnt Dreher = bred = bread) and because I eat a lot of bread products....pizza, noodles, burgers, etc.)
5:20 Harrison Ford from '80 to '85 released The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Blade Runner (though initially flopped), Return of the Jedi, Temple of Doom, & Witness. Also, '94 was Jim Carrey's breakout year w/ Ace Ventura, The Mask, & Dumb and Dumber.
I feel like the Rock does enough movies in a year you could probably craft a similar list for him. So many of his aren't critical successes, but in all fairness, neither was Con Air or Face Off.
@@jbearclowater Face/Off was critically lauded, but not so much for Con Air & The Rock. Though I think they're basing it on how beloved the movies have become by 90s action fans.
I remember when the movie came out, the local paper's headline for the review said "Plane Stupid". I immediately called four friends and said we need to see this. We were not disappointed.
Their chemistry and energy level were fantastic. This may be the most fun I've ever had watching the commentary. It might also be the Con Air Effect at work. I loved this movie as a kid and watched the trifecta of The Rock, Con Air, and Face/Off constantly on loop. Also does anyone else remember all the controversy surrounding "How do I live without you?" between LeAnn Rimes and Trisha Yearwood? I can remember them on TV both at the Grammys. Awkward...
I find Gerard Butler to be my current Nick Cage. His movies are just all over the place. His performances are stellar to ridiculous. You can't help but love him.
Fun fact: Nicolas Cage did not realise that there was such a thing as 'being Nicolas Cage' until during the filming of Face/Off when he saw Travolta acting as 'him'.
I thought Garland Greene was an excelect serial killer and I'm not sure where you got the "redemption" arc from his character.... Just because he didn't kill the little girl? Most serial killers have reasons to why they kill, they generally don't kill anyone who crosses their path.... Garland Greene's reasons were never given so the little girl may not have fit into his ideal victim.... Though he did seem very intelligent, very calm and methodical, extremely impartial (didn't really care about anyone on the plane, even when he knew Poe killed another prisoner) Also how he easily changed his "mask" to seamlessly blend into any new situation - how he was calm and relaxed after he was released - to happy when singing with the little girl - to enthusiastic gambler after his escape in Vegas He was the scariest prisoner on the plane and I didn't see his ending as happy, it was more "holey F#@* he's out!"
there is a scene where he hints that he might have been temporarily insane at the time he did all the killing and just snapped to cause them. could be that he might have reached a sense of peace after being in prison and no longer has that desire to kill, That is were the Redemption Arc comes from. But your take is pretty damn solid. He was the most dangerous man on the plane and he is free now
Maybe that's her backstory... she was on American Gladiators, before leaving at the height of her popularity to follow her dream of being in an electro music group, the spectacular implosion of which sent her on a murderous rampage, which resulted in her incarceration.
I think my favorite part of this is watching Lon and Steve watching the scenes in the trailers with pure joy on their faces... and the synchronized, simultaneous air guitar. LOLOL!!
definitely statham. he's so over the top and ridiculous and actiony and none of his movies are critically acclaimed, but they're all movies you'll love years later for the pure stathamness of them
@@jp3813 Well, to continue going down this rabbit hole... Poe, undercover in prison for the past few years, is being reassigned to another case. His idiot DEA boss insists on giving him a gun, as in the movie but anticipating that Cusack's character will object, he sneaks the gun to Poe inside a birthday gift for his (fake?) daughter. Poe doesn't want to carry it on his person and blow his cover, so he re-hides it in the bunny before it gets stowed.
The connection he got with that little girl during the tea party was what made Garland Green decide not to hurt children anymore. At least that's my reading of it.
That bit of instrumental Lon sang(?) at 2:26 was actually Carl Stalling performing Raymond Scott's "Powerhouse" - he conducted all the Looney Tunes music from their golden age.
I love The Rock and Con Air and Face/Off, but I had no clue they came out in that close a proximity to each other (although in retrospect it does make sense)
Let us not forget in the realm of 90s action films that the first act of U.S. Marshals was pretty much a less goofy Con-Air. And starred Two Face, Blade, and Iron Man. I mean Agent K, Willie Mays Hayes, and Sherlock Holmes. Ty Cobb, Simon Phoenix, and Charlie Chaplin? Eh, you know who I’m talking about.

Honestly the reason face/off is so unlike other action films is because it's a soap opera. John Woo does Soap Opera's with bullets. Just like in a soap opera where everyone is over acting and VERY serious Woo does that but also directs the action the same way. A Better Tomorrow 2 is the peak example. There is a final gunfight in a completely white house and by the end the house is red with the blood of everyone who is shot.
My platoon was warned in boot camp (USMC) about not using that specific move, upper-cut-palm-strike-to-the-chin, against civilians. Because, yes, we would be handled in court differently. Maybe the Green Berets didn't have that part of the class, maybe he just forgot in the heat of the 3 on 1 fight, and maybe he reacted to the presence of a deadly weapon. The knife coming out should have been all the defense he needed, but then it would be a court room drama, not an action comedy.
The baby monologue made me think it... and you guys brought up his southern accent a moment later. Is this a direct sequel to Raising Arizona? Is Cameron Poe an aged, grizzled, and reformed H.I. McDunnough?!
But of course the reason Con Air 2 never got made is that "In space no one can hear your accent". Oh maybe that would be a plus ;) I have to admit to liking Mister Malkovich in the Reds.

I can't help but show up for his upcoming ridiculosity, Angel Has Fallen
That's a solid call 👌
Eh he’s not quite crazy as Cage, he’s just lackluster at times
Butler is nowhere near the actor Cage is. I couldn't see him just coming out with an Oscar-worthy performance like Cage can.
@@tomtalks23 I'm not watching any of Nick Cage's Oscar worthy performances. Those aren't the Nick Cage I want to see. So your point is moot.

The space prison movie was called Lockout, with Guy Pierce as Nic Cage...IN SPACE...
More like Guy Pierce as Snake Plissken, so much so that they got sued.
There's Fortress 2 as well, with Christopher Lambert. Lockout is the better of two, admittedly.
Really wish Nic Cage was in Godfather 3
And right before that run of The Rock, Con Air and Face Off he won an Oscar for Leaving Las Vegas. The mid-90s were peak Cage.
John Cusack? Grosse Pointe Blank ;)

Now you have something to aspire to!
Pensacola in the house!
John Cusack is in the upcoming Amazon Studios/Gillian Flynn adaptation of the British series Utopia alongside Rainn Wilson and Sasha Lane.

Con Air is the best movie ever with beer, that's scientifically proven by the University of Gen X Dad Association.

If Nick Cage was cast as the undercover agent they could have skipped the whole trial and daughter story, giving time for MORE ACTION!
But we wouldn't have the bunny scenes.
...unless the bunny was part of his cover story, and where he hid his gun.
Retroactive RED inspiration for Malkovich?
