"I saw this in a movie about a bus that had to SPEED around a city, keeping its SPEED over fifty, and if its SPEED dropped, it would explode! I think it was called, 'The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down.'"
The delivery trucks in Diehard 1 and 3 have the same logo as the plane in Speed. The dictator villian in Diehard 2 is from the fictional country in Commando. They all take place in the same extended universe.
If I can ever get it on video, I will, but I wanted y'all to know that when Danielle Radford is talking, my 11-month-old daughter puts on her big, baby grin and claps her hands with enthusiastic baby fervor. 😊
I care a teenager with special needs and she goes nuts when Joe is taking. She absolutely loves him and it makes me giggle every time she gets excited 😁
There was a news story a couple weeks ago about a bunch of Airline passengers having to take a bus the rest of the way to LA when their flight from San Francisco had to make an emergency landing in Bakersfield. One of them was Keanu Reeves and if I had been one of those passengers I would have so been throw off that bus for repeatedly asking if it will explode if we go under 50 miles an hour.
I feel whenever Keanu Reeves is onscreen, no matter what his character's motivation, Keanu is the human equivalent of the meditative atmosphere of a Japanese Zen rock garden intermingled into every character he plays. This is not a negative. Please just (preferably) walk through a Japanese garden...or more likely for all of us, just Google an example.
Great trailer and commentary as always, thank you! I'm the same age as Dan and loved Speed when I was a kid, watched it many times, but didn't know until you said in this that it was written by Joss Whedon! Thank you for that. In the mood for a rewatch now.
What I find most fascinating about Keanu’s career, is how versatile it is - usually only the critically acclaimed actors consciously go for versatile resumes, sometimes not even then. Despite his critics, Keanu just does Keanu - he’s like a ZEN Honeybadger🐝🍯 🦡
I think part of his success and the ease of the audience to root for him is, to the best of my memory, he's never really given you an offscreen reason to think very ill of him. He's certainly never sought the spotlight out but also hasn't done or said anything awful.
@@kevinw712 Agreed, he comes off as how people imagine they'd act if they were a star. I recall watching a recent interview with him about his love of bikes and the custom motorcycle business he (co-)owns. When asked, he indicated the bike he's never ridden but would love to would be a moto-gp bike. I'm like, "dude, you're a current, popular movie star who actually knows how to ride. All you'd have to do is get your agent to phone any of the moto-gp teams and they'd easily set you up for a few laps, for the PR if not just for the fun." But no, he just acted like it wasn't something that'd probably end up ever happening.
I absolutely love the team on the show today. I think I watched the Russel Brand part about 5 times just to see Dan laugh. What a sweet start to the day.
My first viewing of Speed was while riding a bus on the way to a Youth Group ski trip when I was about 8. I feel as though watching it on a bus for the first time was the only way to watch this movie the right way.
Speed was the movie where Keanu Reeves stopped shouting. He does a great job of being serious but his voice completely cracks in Point Break when he yells. In his later movies, he gets quiet when he's angry. In the Matrix, Neo whispers when he's angry. Even here, he throws that tantrum but his voice itself stays low.
Thank you so much for putting a link to the Honest Trailer in the description, and a link back to this video in the description for the Honest Trailer!
5:09 Hey, it's the Vincent Adultman of action movies! Also, congratulations on your 295th Honest Trailer! I wonder what you have planned for the 300th episode!
Spencer may remember Stupid Babies from the Simpsons, but that episode is from late 1995, 4 years after Angelica started calling Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, and Lill stupid babies.
I always thought Keanu was only okay. Then I watched a doc or a news broadcast where he went to a school, and the kids were reading Shakespeare. And some of them were okay, but then he took it and he nailed it. Totally showed them how it's done. He deserves more credit than he gets. He plays the part that the part needs.
There are some great videos of just how nice Keanu is, including a story from Sandra about how he held her dress from flying up in the final scene stunt. Go see Wick!
1. At the time I knew some few people holding the phone like that occasionally, including me in few instances. When you spend longer periods on the phone, you need to change the ear for some reason and sometimes your hand that side isn't available. (Yes, this includes phone sex but not limited to) 2. The phone thing didn't catch on because the wireless phones/cellphones got smaller and smaller after this movie. Even if it began to catch on, it faded away as you need somewhat bigger phones for that kind of reverse holding.
I'm an architect and these commentary videos are the only things that keep me up-and-going at those long project-submission nights! Loooots of rewatches going around btw=D
In Keanu Reeves' 35 years in Hollywood, I have only seen five movies with him in it: Much Ado About Nothing, Chain Reaction, The Replacements, A Scanner Darkly, and Neon Demon. Of those five, A Scanner Darkly is the only one I've ever rewatched.
Not gonna scroll through all the comments to check, but anyone else notice that both of Dan's references to other Jeff Daniels movies - "Starman" and "The Fabulous Baker Boys" - are actually Jeff Bridges movies?
Speed 2019 would have The Rock in the starring role, he'd have a kid with a disability or major illness that he cares for, at some point he'd have to climb out of the bus and steer it manually by hand underneath, they'd have to make a viral trending Twitter post on board to let other drivers know to clear an upcoming intersection, and it would be a luxury bus with Vice President Charlize Theron on board.
I think you just explained why we all love Keanu. He's not the best actor but he just comes across as so likeable on screen and off. The scene in John Wick when he's talking to the cop is just perfect comedic timing.
Somebody did a theatre show of this for FRINGE WORLD a few years ago. The show was on a bus, the audience were the hostages on the bus. They has cardboard cars that had people moving them... it was... fucking amazing
Cross-arm phone technique is imperative for answering the phone and working on the computer at the same time - only over 30s office workers will understand.
the lack of commentary on this amazing classic is unfortunate. no one addressed the greatest character intro of all time at 10:24, barely touched on the soundtrack, the cinematography, the live action stunts, dennis hopper's one liners, the editing, the awesome pace, etc it's not shakespeare but it's the best in it's genre.
You could make the argument that the ear you hold the phone to naturally is so ingrained in you that even if your hand is injured it feels more natural to put it to your usual ear. Or it's just dumb, either one.
Its funny because in Spain they translated 50 miles per hour to 50 km/h for visual coherence I suppose. So, there was not that much tension for us actually.

Dan cracking up at Spenny's impressions is my everything today.
That was a pretty good Russell Brand to be fair.
Marcos Forty-Four he's not getting nearly enough credit. That was pretty spot on
As an English person, that was awful. Sorry. Just was.
@@stonecold6521 As a UK resident for 25 years I appreciate the comedic take.
As another English person, yeah it was awful, but still funny.
It was both funnier and smarter than anything the actual Brand ever said.

Emil Hansen Endgame reference?
Innit!
Not really, Just a happy accident (bob ross) 😉 but now, I can’t stop (flux pavilion)

Spencer's Russell Brand had me dying!! Great trailer and commentary as always
Thanks Joe and Danielle for repping us fellow misanthropic bus riders
Same boat.
@@patrickpjsullivan DON'T LET IT SLOW DOWN!
Keanu Reeves is probably one of the only actor if not the only nowadays I want to actively support by watching his movies. He's such a cool guy
After the past few years of it coming to light the terrible people in Hollywood he's just an uplifting story.

I'm Going to also highly request an honest trailer for my favorite Keanu Reeves movie, DRACULA
Love the Summer Blockbuster thing. Keep it going.
A concept I couldn't have thought of but, I love.
John Wick is far and away the most attractive he has ever been. As a straight man, there is something sexy about a damn good beard.
As a straight man I think the beard is ruggedly handsome.

The greatest phone based villain is in Phone Booth though

You should totally do "Enemy of the State," "Bad Boys" and "Wild, Wild West." Basically complete the movies Will Smith did that people watched.
Great job as usual guys. This movie is one of my personal "classics". I watched it sooo many times on VHS.
You wanna talk '90's? I saw Speed on Laser Disc!

Broken Arrow?
Have they done The Rock yet? If so, I want an Honest Trailer to that.

Spencer is right!! Jeff Daniels character was suppose to be the other villain!!! Boom fact of facts
You mentioned Chris Farley and i immediately tought of his busdriver role in Billy Madison 😅
Now that's the movie I want. Just put Chris Farleys bus driver in Speed
GREAT! GRAND! WONDERFUL!
I absolutely love the debate about who is dumber Lloyd or Harry and I completely agree! I also love Dan logically conceding the point.
I love when Joe wears his Redwall shirt.

Them saying that you can’t get to the Hollywood sign gives me a slight urge to find a way to do so
