    FULL REVIEW + PICTURES: stridewise.com/clarks-desert-...
    Based off of a shoe worn by British soldiers in North Africa during World War 2, the Desert boot is indisputably the most popular chukka boot on Earth and quite possibly one of the most iconic shoes of all time.
    It’s also cheap, shapeless, and the sole is a mess. So why is it so darn popular?
    FIRST GLANCE
    Made in Vietnam, the Oakwood suede is the most popular version of the shoe. Ankle height with barely any laces to speak of, this is about as minimalist and no frills as a boot can get.
    This is a basic, unpretentious, super informal boot. You’d have to be crazy to wear these with a suit or slacks, not just because they have practically no structure and just four eyelets per shoe, the sole is something else: it gets black with dirt almost immediately after you try them on and there’s very little stability.
    But man oh man, is this a comfortable, good looking boot. Ever wanted to be able to walk outside in slippers? This is about as close as you’ll get, plus they’re great at dressing up casual outfits even - I’m going there - outfits with shorts. (Sometimes, anyway.)
    LEATHER
    A suede that, contrary to popular belief, is made in Vietnam by applying a small amount of wax to the suede in order to enhance its character. The Oakwood is a light sandy color that has no structyre and isn’t the strongest or dressiest suede around. It’s not waterproof, either (this is a Desert boot, after all) but it’s soft, comfy, and it breathes well in warm weather.
    [Check out my favorite suede boots, the Taft Dragon boot, here: • Taft Dragon Boot 1.0 R... ]
    LEATHER CARE
    Clarks recommends using a suede brush to clean off dirt and for stains, use a rubber suede cleaner or just a regular pencil eraser. (Seriously.)
    It’s unusual for people to use oils on suede because it can wreck the nappy finish, but you can try a wax like Otter Wax if you really want to care for this.
    Want to waterproof the leather? I get the temptation and Kiwi’s suede protector would work, but the welt and the sole aren’t waterproof at all so it might not be worth it when you actually step into the rain.
    SOLE
    A crude form of natural rubber that is very soft, very cheap, and very informal. The comfort is a double-edged sword: it feels like you’re walking around in slippers, but you can also feel the ground beneath you when you step on gaps in the pavement and the like. You don’t feel well supported in these shoes. (Again, think slippers.)
    It’s also pretty sensitive: it gets black with dirt on the first wear (so there’s no real point cleaning it), it gets stiff in the cold, it can melt in extreme heat, and it’s not all that waterproof.
    But again, it’s very comfy and it’s actually able to be resoled if you hate it, although you have to ask if it’s worth paying half the price of the boots to do so.
    A goodyear welted version of these, called the Desert Welt, is available for about $300 if the sole is your sticking point (and the cost isn’t).
    [Want to spend under $200, but don’t want it to be so obvious? Check out my favorites, the Thursday Boot Company: • Thursday Captain Boot ... ]
    FIT & SIZING
    I’m between 11.5 and 12 on a Brannock and I got these in an 11. I considered moving up to an 11.5 because the 11 was a little snug, but this suede stretches really quickly - I could feel it happening as I walked around their store on Madison Avenue here in New York. It’s true you can kind of see my toes if you take a close look and the 11.5 fit me fine enough, but I like a firm fit.
    Just one width is available and there was no break in period at all.
    [Read my ultimate guide to how boots should fit: stridewise.com/how-boots-shou...]
    PRICE
    About $130, sometimes closer to $120 on Amazon. Note that there are over a dozen varieties of this shoe, all of which vary in price - I’ve seen the khaki leather on sale for $60 per pair. Don’t expect the Oakwood to go on sale as often as other varieties, since it’s so popular.
    PROS
    Comfortable
    Versatile with informal outfits
    Inexpensive
    Stylish (for the price)
    CONS
    Just one width available
    Shapeless and blobby
    Not durable
    Kind of cheap looking
    VERDICT
    Just because they don’t cost $300 doesn’t mean they’re not worth getting. I like the way they spruce up informal outfits, I like the soft sole, and while it has a zillion and one issues I think at this price point it’s worth a buy.

    Desert boots were never worn in WW2 by Commonwealth soldiers with consistency. It's some kind of a legend: the standard issued boots were the black pebble-grained Ammo Boots - which are still made by William Lennon if you want to review it eventually (WM is some kind of a low-key-White uk company). It's true that they were discovered by the Western world thanks to the soldiers, but regarding the combat issuing, they were more of a private purchase made by officers or very small units.
    Also, thanks for pointing out these are not "WINTER BOOTS", it's a concept quite hard to grasp for most of the people. I live in a very warm weather and they never bothered me but I always get the odd looks if I sport chukkas in hot seasons

    • @amirkhalid5449

    For a future video could you do a follow up with the made in Italy and England versions? I read they just reopened a plant in England. I've owned a Vietnamese made pair in Beeswax for a while and loved them and recently picked up a pair of Original Desert boots off of ebay. They were practically new and the orange stitching they had caught my eye. I discovered in the inside they were labeled made in England. Point is that they just feel of a higher quality. Great channel, I made sure to subscribe.

    Just got my third pair of Desert boot last week. The Clarks are what I wear these days (I wanted to get away from wearing running shoes all of the time). I recently bought a new pair of suede Sanders Holborn Chukkas, but I also looked at the Church's Ryder lll, Loake Kempton and a couple of others. The Sanders are a G UK fit which is equivalent to a EE US width. The Sanders are a bit wide on me so I think I'm going to send them back. sparater no I think Thursdays chukkas are miles better in quality. They’re just a tiny bit pricier ($150) but I should note that some varieties of Clark’s , like khaki leather, can fall all the way to $60/pair.
      So Clark’s is cheaper but Thursday better value

      I have chukkas of this particular commonly seen style, but also 2 really good pairs of UK military pattern desert boots directly styled after the ones issued in WW2 to all british and UK forces. Clark's chukka boots are very nice indeed and quite comfortable for everyday use and wear, but being a military historian/reenactor, i prefer the "issued look". If anyone wants to see what i'm talking about just look up whatpriceglory or onlinemilitaria, online . they sell reproductions of the issued boots i speak of,plus others like ammo boots as well as U.S. G.I. boots.(i paid 65 bucks for my desert boots and they are great cause they can be resoled if need be).

    I don't consider $130 to be cheap. Actually they retail for about $150 now. To me cheap is $50 or less. Granted they are not top grain leather with a Dainite sole, but they are very, very comfortable and they look nice for a casual boot and that has a lot to be said for it. I own a pair in black suede and they will never show dirt. The tops are rugged and they can be resoled should you one want to do that. They go great with jeans or chinos and lets face it, you don't buy these to go with a charcoal suit or any suit for that matter. I consider them a great addition to my wardrobe and they will get a lot of use from me. And Clark is the original desert boot and they know how to make em right. These are not junk by any means.

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The guy at Clarks said it was a combination rapid stitch and cemented sole. Definitely not Goodyear welted, though The Desert Welt from Clarks is this boot with a Goodyear welt. To be honest if you want a Goodyear welted Desert boot it's a lot cheaper to get a $150 Scout Chukka from Thursday Boot Company.

  • @tispete924
    @tispete924 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Of course you can wear them with shorts.
    However, Clarks are now made in the Far East and similar styles by other brands, such as Roamers desert boots, are a lot cheaper. That said, the soles on Roamers don’t last long but they are cheap enough that buying a new pair is cheaper than a resole for a standard leather shoe.

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's weird. My father owns the same pair but they're not lined, it's just leather. Anyway I prefer the Bushacre 2 on the Beeswax finish because they're more structured, the sole is a more modern compound so it will be more comfortable and durable and the beeswax finish is just way more sturdy than suede and will look way better after some wear and tear, as they're coated with oils and waxes they never really stain, they will repel water drops (although I wouldn't purposely use them on wet days because the sole is not attached in a waterproof way).

    I have a pair but they're slightly lighter than yours. They say made in Italy inside. They were only £70 and they're pretty much the only thing I have worn this summer. I also used to wear Clarks shoes as a kid and so have my kids when they were young. I've had compliments about them which surprised me ( in a good way ) because these are quite plain, anonymous boots. Then again that's probably part of their appeal. I'll ask my colleagues about the tannery since I work in Leeds. Another great impartial and unbiased review, keep them coming. There's people who have been doing it longer than you and who have more subscribers than you who don't do anywhere as good a job as you. You don't spend all the video saying "beautiful" and " American craftsmanship" , that's all I'm going to say...😉

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much Gary! CF Stead makes suede for the fancier Desert Welt boots from Clarks but these ones get leather from Vietnam, at least according to the guys on Clarks customer service line I spoke with. There are so many channels where every single review is positive, it's because they're trying to get people to click their 'buy' links so they make a profit. Even if they're not trying to do that, it's boring when a reviewer just likes everything. I'm glad you find my videos impartial :)

      Stridewise I get why they do it. If I had a TH-cam channel I'd probably do the same if I was offered enough money. I googled CF Stead , I know exactly where they are in Leeds. I've been passed many, many times without really noticing it.

    Afrikaners in South Africa have been wearing these for centuries. We call them either velskoene (skin shoes) or, more correctly, veldskoene (field shoes). They are traditionally the footwear of farmers, and are very comfortable in stirrups - both as farmers and commandos, Afrikaners spent much time in the saddle. They were never meant to be stylish. They are made in both leather and suede.

    I'd say they're not really comfortable, with specific reference to the footbed. When I tried them on at the store, there was a sharp difference in rise between the forefoot bed and the heel, for lack of a shank. I've always wanted one, but I ended up not buying it. I understand that the Desert Coal model has addressed most of the cons of this model.

    • @DwyaneWadeCounty
      @DwyaneWadeCounty ปีที่แล้ว

      They say that the crepe sole is soft and squishy and that their are great for standing, but did you find that to be the case? Did you feel pressure in your heels?

    • @mitondo6123
      @mitondo6123 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DwyaneWadeCounty I can understand how crepe soles can be squishy and comfortable. It is, however, the way the sole of the Desert Boot is made, with a heel but with no shank. The downward transition was drastic such that I felt a sharp downward angle between my heels and the rest of my feet. I attribute it to the lack of a shank, which is quite discernible with a squishy sole. Hence, the Wallaby would be more comfortable since it has a flat sole.

    I was hoping for more history on the thing in WW2, if it was actually used in combat(doubt it but...) or was just a back at base shoe like how guys in Afghanistan bring stuff like crocs (we ain't as fashionable as the older folk) to wear on FOB when not in their boots. Wish they were cheaper, seems like the name adds more to the price than actual materials considering their materials are apparently lower quality than the originals.

Raphael made this video that spends a bit more time on the history: th-cam.com/video/991S_mRpRd0/w-d-xo.html Maybe the title I used for this video made it sound less like a review and more like a documentary!
