Clarks Desert Boot Review - Clarks are the most well known chukka boots in the world but are they the best chukka boots? The Clarks classic Desert boot is not, in my opinion but they do have an option that I think might get clark's a little closer to having the best chukka boot. In this video we cut it in half to see what's inside and if it can fix the 7 things I hate about clarks.

Genuine Crepe comes in same thickness sheets, to start it’s a difficult material to work with, then to make a wedge sole it becomes time consuming to shape to the right angle.
The foam is to save time and money

Bought my first pair of Clark's Desert Boots in 1954, the year I finished high school.
On hot days they were cooler that most any other shoe. Also, bought a pair of the "Blue Suede Shoes" and they were very hot to wear in the Summer.
Then to university in Vancouver where it rains all winter and I wore the Clark's year-round.
Each pair lasted for some 5 years, going through two sets of laces.
    Very good for year-round wear.
Bought my last pair about 35 years ago but have not worn them much because the lighter color seemed not to go with blue jeans anymore.
Bought a pair with the waxed brown leather finish some ten years ago and they have been very comfortable.
    Cheers,

As a Clarks fan that’s been wearing them for the better part of 30 yrs and have well over 75 pairs I can speak on the things you’ve gotten wrong or misunderstood. …
Comparing the two deserts is wrong in the sense the brown pair are a remake of a 100+ yr old design. The name implies what they were made for. The suede version are a remake of the classic design. Something Clarks does with all their shoes. There are like 4-5 currently. I don’t know if you’re playing ball in them for them to chunk up but I’ve never had that issue to the extent you’re referring to. What happens is the crepe tends to collapse where you put your weight on the most something that can be fixed by sticking them in the freezer for a bit. Like with any shoe company that’s been around for eons, the name is everything. No different then Nike or Jordan’s which are made for pennies and sell for ungodly sums, you’re only gonna see quality in bespoke shoes. Clarks does collabs with just about every clothing designer on the planet and uses leather/suede from some reputable companies. Come down to the Caribbean, especially Jamaica where these are worn like sneakers. Mostly with no socks. Hence why reggae artist are the faces of Clarks. At the end of the day Clarks brand is suppose to be unchanged. And while they do update their shoes, they still sell originals (hence the “Clarks Originals” branding)

I buy the Clark’s Originals, men’s size 7, perfect for me, a women’s size 9W. I’ve never had the soles come off. I also wear them without socks. Because of RA, I cannot wear any type of heel or a shoe that has my feet on a downward slant. That rules out my wearing nearly all women’s shoes. Clark’s are moderately priced, whereas the other shoes I find comfortable, Birkenstock and the original, 1970’s Kalso Earth Shoe, create a pain in my pocketbook! None of them are “stylish,” but at age 64, that’s not my concern! If someone doesn’t like it, they needn’t look down!

I sprayed them with Clarks own suede protector, and the uppers still look really good. For me, being a sixties influenced Mod, Clarks are an authentic brand which give me that nearest thing to time-travelling back to the era of The Who and the Kinks. So really, this boot and brand is part of the adventure -- and more than just a boot. :0)

They are unable to control their supply chain, different shoes being manufactured and sourced from over 300 suppliers. A clarks shoe will not last a long long time, and they become more uncomfortable as time goes on. So happy I've switched to a company that sells an honest product, RM Williams are fantastic value for money when compared to say a Churches shoes.

Question, my desert boots need a resole. Could I ask the cobbler to put in a shank, or would that not work? Thanks in advance

I would love if you could review the Clark’s Bushacres! I have a pair and they’re amazing for the price. Crepe outsoles are too slippery for Portland’s frequent wet weather and the synthetic rubber in those works better for me.

I agree with you on Clark’s. My biggest peeve is no arch support. Cardinal sin for a shoemaker with such a big name. I haven’t bought Clark’s for that reason despite loving the desert boot chukka style. I’d be keen on checking out your boots but doubt I can afford them. Maybe the next release. Great vid!

I have some suede Clarks desert boots which I find really comfortable. This is the first time I’ve seen these. I’ve just order some for £84 which seems fairly reasonable to me.

I had to get a third row of eyelets put into my Clarks because I couldn’t stand how loose they felt. That plus an insole and they feel much better, I don’t wear them often though.

You should look into reviewing the ECCO Turn Ankle Boot for men. Its a chukka. Or the Rieker F1310-25. Another Chukka boot. Or some ideas for next years Chukka series.

I have been wearing Clarks for almost fifty years now, did not know they are crappy !
Some suggestions: try using different insoles, makes a world of difference.
Regarding the slipping of the classic desert boots: I just punch two extra lace holes higher up on the boot, works like a charm.
When you remove the outer crepe heel you have a nice zero drop boot/ shoe.
    Cheers !

Most of my boots and sandals are Clarks, I've been a customer for over 20 years. I think they are mostly extremely well-made footwear. Desert boots - of any brand - have never appealed to me, because they are so flat and look a bit flimsy.

yep, removing the heels is the key. I have a 3/4" leg length difference. Once the heels are gone I have 3/4" added to the sole on one, they are comfortable and 0 drop. I hate the idea of a wedge sole.

Rely on them since 2012. Still buy a new pair in every year. Have some complains though but still clarks have some design which is far stylish and sober than any other expensive brands.

I know you don’t seem to do a ton with loafers/ dress shoes but I would like to know if it is possible to attach a sperry topsider rubber sole onto a pair of horsebit Gucci loafers. Do you have any thoughts on it/ know someone who would do something like that/ is that something you would do?
    Thanks!

Congrats on your line of boots, I just may have to cop a pair.
I like everything on the new version of the Clark’s Desert Boot except the wedge. That’s a deal breaker for me, reminds me of my wife’s shoes. I would have preferred that they kept the heel and added a shank for extra support and bam… perfecto!

Recommendation, request to review cut in 1/2 Clarks Wallabee. Its been revealed that the new construction reduces the original crepe sole to just an applied outsole with a man made interior and no longer a complete crepe sole. Any thoughts?

Entire generations of School kids grew up wearing Clarks Desert Boots in Australia ... I don't recall any complaints - entering Teen years in the 80's, these were then worn by Gangs of Kids in various Youth Subcultures ... Rude Boys, Mods, Skinheads and Punks ... the Ripple Sole Desert Boots were worn primarily by the Rudes while the Chukka's were preferred by Mods. When they wore out - we just replaced them.

Have you considered doing a series for traveller's and persons living in foreign countries? What do I mean? The first thing I think of when I view your videos, is this: which countries of the world can I buy quality footwear for a much cheaper price (not knockoffs, I mean the genuine article). In my experience living in S.E. Asia, even though so many shoes and hoots are made in Vietnam, all you can buy in Saigon are fakes. And if you do go to a licensed store the price isn't that much cheaper than in Canada. Likewise, I would love to see a video series on getting custom-made shoes in Italy, Spain, Romania, etc.
