Yes, u can choose to not put the dried chili, and just a bit of chili powder (chili powder won't be too spicy, and will help with the color), and u can add ketchup in as well :)

Ingat serau kisar satu batang dan tumis satu batang, chendehon da bunga kantan bubuh sedikir, u sudah miss out chendehon, jangan campur chilli sos dalam kuah ,haya u boleh bubuh serbik cabai cap Babas dan sedikit serbuk kujid, ikan u haya goreng 70 per sent masak sahaja , jika kuah u nak menang orang, nenas hujung yg masam ambil 5 inci ,kisar dan juice dan isi nenas campur masuk dan kuah Asam pedas ikan ini.. she's into tomato sauce. Really no need for that. The recipe is exactly same all over east Asia and in south India. Wonder how they came to be same. Some differences are golangaal, shrimp paste. But none others.
This is a nyonya dish, an amalgamation of early Chinese immigrants using Malaysian ingredients to make food. It uses the ingredient asam jawa (tamarind), hence the name.
Only we Chinese in Malaysia n Singapore appreciate this mixture of languages and dialects. I like her boldness to speak a smattering of Mandarin and her desire to share her cooking recipes.
