Thank you so much for this video. I grew up on this train as a child. Annadale was my hometown and the rhythm of these trains was the cadence of my childhood! We always took it to St. George, but almost never to Tottenville, so seeing that end point is especially memorable for me! Riding this train was one of my favorite childhood memories. And I'm old enough to remember the old wicker seats and the chicken wire windows and the train conductors asking for fares as I pretended to sleep!

Wonderful to see someone else who remembers the same car seats as I do. Should have gone to Tottenville. You would have met another ferry -- that one to Perth Amboy, NJ

    • @maureenwilson6031

@@margies5625I remember the Perth Amboy ferry very well. When we went to Perth Amboy to shop, a ride on the ferry was a special treat. We'd just ride the ferry over to Tottenville and back, not getting off, just riding back and forth. It seemed like an ocean voyage to me and my sister. We were very sad when it stopped running.

It's crazy, I was watching this for the memory and to show somebody the train I had to take when living in Staten island, I moved three years ago, probably right before this video was taken because you can see me get on at eltingville and I sit right next to you the rest of the train ride in the grey hoodie... The SIR is legally a railroad that's overseen in a different manner by the NTSB than the rest of the subway. This fact is muddled a bit by the usage of NYCT rolling stock. Look at the "watch the gap" signs on the doors, they're required on all railroad's passenger cars federally. The "metros" such as NYC subway has a different set of regulations.

When I was somewhere between 11 and 14, me and 1or 2 friends would ride from Great Kills to New Dorp to go to the movies at the Lane Theater. Back then the fare was .25 cents. That same .25 cents could buy more candy at the theater. So we would see which car the conductor was on and get as far away as we could. There are only two stops between Great Kills and New Dorp. So if we got caught, the only thing the conductor could do was put us off at the next stop. Big deal, wait for the next train, and do it again. We left early to avert disaster (arriving late ). I t gave us time to walk down New Dorp Lane, which at that time, before the mall or even the first shopping plaza (Forest Ave shopping plaza) was one of the places people came to shop. Port Richmond was the #1 place to shop at that time.

To be fair, it can. Here would be my plan. It would be to connect the 4th Avenue Line in Brooklyn to the present day SIR through a tunnel in between the boroughs. Here's how it would work. Extend the W from Whitehall Street into Brooklyn and have it run on the 4th Avenue Line until 59th where the W then goes left and uses the Bay Ridge Branch tracks to go to make a stop at the abandoned Brooklyn Army Terminal before going into the tunnel to Staten Island and then it continues where it's next stop ends up being St George and it continues to Tottenville. Tell me if you think this is a good plan or not.

Cats01 Thousands of residents use the SIR to head to the city for their jobs and is used by students (You never seen a train pack before until you seen a 2:00 PM train filled with high school kids. You can’t move a inch.) So no it not a waste of taxpayer dollars. As a person who lives on Staten Island it a very useful means of transport which is sadly not invested in more. Half the stations are in bad shape.
