First saw Laura at the Fillmore East in Greenwich Village many years ago & waited at the backstage exit door for her along with other fans. Late 60s... She was amazingly talented. ❤

    I'm basically overwhelmed!
I'm 60+ & just learned that Laura wrote "Stoney End" & so, so many hit songs that other singers have covered. Laura died far too young. She was brilliant, to say the least!

It's possible to complain about the recording quality and lack of perfect tonal rigor in this performance, the comments make that abundantly clear. What nobody should complain about is the view it offers into the musical mind of one of the genius singers/musicians/composers this country has ever been graced by, it's fascinating and gorgeous from beginning to end. I can't even start with the 'schmaltz' remarks, surely they're a joke. Everything this woman did from 1966-'72 is a gift to humanity.

Laura was magnificent. I was in heaven listening to her, she was so tiny and such a SWEET woman, an angel on earth, for sure. 😊❤

I only discovered her this week. She is beyond exceptional. The greatest artist popular music has produced: artist, in the truest sense of the word. It is not just her complex and original and personal songwriting, but the beautiful, soulful voice and singing which creates such an intense emotional connection with the listener that it leaves you in weepy rapture. Its love at first listen. This is music for the soul, and there is nothing better.

I don't even care that this has a structure like the Diana Ross version (normally FAR from my favorite rendition of the song)-it's a memory of Laura Nyro's beautiful voice, musicality, and sheer prescence that's been captured and held on to by this disc from nearly half a century ago. To whoever recorded this, I thank you heartily.

+knockshinnoch1950 You're so right....To my mind this is a very whimsical sloppy & slow version of what is a great song..... I say this as a fan of Laura Nyro's work..... Ashford & Simpson's song was done best by Tammi Terrell and Marvin Gaye.... The second best version is the hit version by Ike and Tina Turner, if you can tolerate Phil Spector's dubious over-epic production.

That's beautiful. First time i've heard it. Despite the limitations of a manky old tape, the contemporary sounding improvisation of the chord changes stands out, and just the weigh she weighs and intensifies her performances; loosening, tightening, dipping, climbing, soaring, the lot.. yep.. still a goddess.

I cherish those Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell records so and a lot of covers of those songs completely fail for me personally. Case in point, I have never liked Diana Ross' version of 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' released in 1970 (the same year Tammi died). And though Laura here does her own take on the Ross version, she just owns it. Respect. Serious respect.
