    In zone 9b, Sacramento, it is always best to water in the early am. Too hot later . I use drip on all my garden beds. I know now not to try to grow dill thru the summer, it was excellent in spring and grew to 4 feet high then died in the heat of June. Oregano and basil are loving the heat.Zucchini died in early August and my squash just cut back production. I grew Cucumber from seed last month and transplanted 9 inch plants on 9-1 for the fall. Still learning what can and what cannot grow well in Sacramento. Tomatoes are a thumbs up until December.Setting spinach, reddish and onion for fall. Thanks Gardener Scott.

    Brilliantly explained Scott 😀
    I see the same thing, lots of wilting on hot days and also when plants are shocked by watering with cold water. With experience over the years, I've learned not to panic 😀

    Your plants look so fresh and green, besides the suffering in the heat, against my zucchini’s,cucumbers etc, covered with disease.

    My pepper plants look melted every day. It's 100 degrees every day right now. But every morning.. They are bushy and beautiful.

    Hmm, interesting, because I'm a Registered Nurse, I'm familiar with the terms "stoma" and "parenchyma" as referring to a structure created in the gastrointestinal tract, and cells that line organs in our bodies, respectively, I've never heard of these in relationships to plants. I'm so glad I've come across your channel, we nurses don't do anything without rationale. I really appreciate your teaching style, every time I watch one of your videos, I learn something new. Rationale is EVERYTHING, without it, you're kind of working in the dark.

    I really liked the way explained it easily. Some I knew wilted but just learned a few more that do it too.

    I can really relate to the plants. I wake up in the morning with a cup of coffee raring to go and as the day goes on I am wilting as well.

    While wilting can be normal on hot days, it can also be a sign of disease - especially if similar plants are not wilting. I had a bunch of cauliflower plants wilt bad on moderately hot days, the plants are not in an area where they get the full afternoon heat. But broccoli and cabbage plants nearby were not wilting. When I looked closer they had a bulbous growth just at ground level - club root. Now I have to swap in new dirt in my raised beds or spend 4-5 years killing the fungus that causes it before I can plant cabbage like plants there.

    I have always watered in the evening. This year I retired with more time I been watering the way every one else said would be better. I have not been happy with the results. I am going back to evening watering. I live in eastern Colorado very dry and windy. I have been thinking of changing back to evening watering this is the first year I tried morning watering. My garden has struggled all summer. I was thinking my plants don't recover from the heat watering in the morning. Thank you for confirming my thoughts. This is why I watch you. You garden in Colorado and know Colorado garden problems.

    So if I understand you correctly wilting is part of a plant's self protecting mode. I was always thinking I needed to water more. TFS

    Thank you for explaining this wilting topic so well! I have been known to over water due to wilting, which I have done much better managing this season! We have had a very hot dry summer here, many days above average temps, so watering properly has been a learning curve! Very helpful vid. Thank you.

    Excellent explanation of the cycle of plant wilt. I am learning so much from you and your videos. Just out of curiosity, would the use of a shade cloth help at all, or would it interfere with the plant's transpiration? Thank you Gardener Scott!

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Yes, shade cloth can make a big difference. It can reduce wilt.

    I grow exclusively in raised beds using a drip system. I recently watched a video from a commercial market gardener who used overhead watering during high-heat periods late in the day to cool off his veggies.
    Even though I don't believe in overhead watering, I decided to try out this approach to mitigate wilting. I used overhead watering (with sprayer attachments) on an assortment of plants in one bed containing lettuce, peppers and beets (among others). I set my drippers to overhead spray for a couple of minutes each day on this particular bed and I noticed no (or little) wilting on the plants in this bed compared to others. I immediately noticed that the overhead-sprayed plants didn't wilt (comparatively speaking). At this point, I don't have any idea if there will be significant production in this bed compared to the others.

    Ok so the wilting I see is normal. I figured out it wasn't a water issue or a disease or pest issue. I've been using sunshades the past 2 years. Specifically creating shade during the hottest part of the day when the sun is directly overhead. Its hotter and more humid here in east central missouri. I dont see the wilting problems on my cukes when I shade them, along with a normal daily watering schedule. No reason this alternative doesn't work too?

    Hi #gardenerscott, When do i not use more time and energy on a plant? I got 2 apple trees from the former owner that I believed died last year but something is growing this year. Should i use more time on them or just pull them out?

    I have two of the same bell pepper plants. One will wilt during the day and the other one never wilts. What could account for that I wonder?

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be that one area of soil holds more moisture or one area gets more shade.

    Greetings Gardner Scott, I have a question concerning Hugelkultur raised bed that I have recently build. I live in an area where organic matter is scarce and I was wondering if I could use excess planks that were left after building the raised bed to fill in my bed because I don't have logs and branches etc.? Thank you for taking time to respond to my question.

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can use planks just like logs.

    If my cucumbers and tomatoes wilt in high 90°F but the soil is semi moist from watering 2 days ago should I wait to water the next morning or that evening? I live in zone8b, San Antonio, Texas. Or should I have watered that morning even tho I watered 2 days before and it's still kinda moist. Thanks Gardner Scott!

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on how fast your soil dries. I water later in the day because that's the point the soil begins to dry after the hot day. If your soil stays moist after a couple days you may have the freedom to water when it best fits your schedule.
