    finding your instructional video was really special. I started out almost 50 years ago buying cut sprouts from my Santa Barbara farmers market, its a huge very special market.
    Moving around the country over these last 25 years,never finding anyone selling the sunflower sprouts. Today my first day planting my seeds, my younger wife was so excited to be apart of this. Sprouts (amino acids,building blocks of protein, enzymes to break down foods)
    If you dont eat enough vegetables to neutralize acids in your body, these sprouts are super life revitalizing. Thank you so much for your complete instructions. Doing this, is like going back to my youth, where finding life enriching foods gave me such great health at 68 years old

      That is exciting Angela Gerhardt! Sunflowers are my favorite, don't let them get their true leaves, harvest when the first set of leaves come. The next set, the true leaves, don't taste so good although I have eaten them, but the shoots taste much better before that happens. Congrats, and enjoy!

    The windows in my apartment face the North so they don't get any direct sunlight during the daylight except about half hour around 7PM
    There is a light though that is a result of the sun in all other directions.
    So my question is if I can still manage to have the green effect that is shown in your video.

    • @TikkiOOO
      @TikkiOOO  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Barbara, sprouts/microgreens seem to do better growing in the dark for the first couple of days depending on the sprout. They get taller and leggier as they stretch up looking for the light. You can do a side by side grow, one covered and the other not to see whether it makes a difference for you. There are different opinions out there, so its best to experiment, try out different ways, and do what works for you. Welcome!

    Can anyone tell me why sunflower shoots and microgreens are not sold in grocery stores as peashoots or any other salad green? Every source online says they're edible so I'm curious why they aren't sold everywhere? I've never even been in a restaurant and seen sunflower petals in salads etc.

    • @annchong9701
      @annchong9701 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They usually carry them in health food stores, but they are very expensive.
      If you experiment with them, they are very easy to grow. The sprouts are great for smoothies too!

  • @dannyandrose
    @dannyandrose 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm curious if dirt is a requirement for sunflower seeds for microgreens.
    As an experimental , I used a tray with drains & catch tray containing water , while the seeds are sprouting , I'm concerned if there's any concern with some seeds turning black , some do so either way , before or after sprouting .
    I'm using city water supply which is neutral pH and it has zero organisms under our microscope ... Can the blackened seed transformation be normal or fungal ?
    Thanks !

    Great tip about not watering before harvest! Thank you :)
    Do you have any other tips for storing them once harvested? Mine tend to get soft and wilted after just a few hours in the fridge. What am I doing wrong?

    • @TikkiOOO
      @TikkiOOO  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Try a damp paper towel in the storage container, it should provide enough humidity to keep the microgreens from wilting. Not too wet, then you will get green slime. They also sell commercial storage bags that keep produce fresh, if the paper towel method doesn't work for you check out storage containers for produce on Amazon. Good luck!

    • @TikkiOOO
      @TikkiOOO  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi the Journey Home, check to make sure they are still moist. If you cover them the first few days, the moisture usually doesn't evaporate unless you live in a very dry climate. So the simple answer is no I didn't, but you might have to if they are drying out. Hope that helps, they are delicious! Thank for the comment!

    • @TikkiOOO
      @TikkiOOO  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't get discouraged Brittany. Your environment might be more humid than mine, water less, and make sure there is good air flow around the plant, not stuffy stagnant air. Some people add a fan. My grow area is airy and dry, mold likes moist and humid. Good luck!

    • @TikkiOOO

      Water it when it feels dry, it depends on your environment. If you live in an arid area then more often, if you have a humid environment then less often. You will learn from experience as you grow.

      Hi BODYKURE it depends what the soil looks like. Mine is usually a mass of roots. If you have a compost pile, throw it in there, or turn it over, and wait for it to break down. Eventually it will break down and you can reuse it. Thanks for the comment!

    • @TikkiOOO
      @TikkiOOO  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, just easier to spray from the top. My trays fit very snugly. Some of my grows that are in bigger trays are bottom watered. I don't have a humid environment, so the spraying from above doesn't cause damage, in a more humid environment you definitely want to water from below. Thanks for the comment!
