For the first time in his career as QB1, Sam Darnold has had a really good HFC, good play-calling, a solid OL and excellent playmakers at the wideout positions. This is not a fluke. I say franchise tag Sam. If he gets a top market value deal and wants to take it, no harm, no foul. JJ and Jones are waiting in the wings. If he doesn't like his options, he can stay with the Vikings and start another year. If he has similar or greater success (e g., puts up top 6 stats like this season), sign him to a long-term deal. If not, you can hand the keys to JJ. JJ will be a rookie again next year. It's a win-win either way.

If Sam keeps playing well, he may get +50M. JJ makes 5M. Considering the success of the team is hugely based on FA’s that Kwesi signed to bolster the defense, it seems almost implausible that he would roster construct by overpaying a QB by 45M vs spending it to acquire more FA’s and rolling with JJ in 2025. He would be back in the Kirk situation all over again.

Kwesi could sign Sam 2 years, 70m, with a $2m base salary and $40m signing bonus pro-rated over the 4 void years in his existing contract. That would give Sam a net 2025 cap hit of about $8m, and a very tradeable 2026 contract of $28m base salary. The Vikings are focused on the game in Seattle and nothing else. They have an opportunity to be a special team, I think they can run the table and get a first round bye and home field throughout the playoffs. That's a fast track to the big one.
As a long time Vikes fan, there is still plenty of time for this season to go south! If for some wonderous reason the Vikes and Darnold have a successful rest of the year, I have no issue with him coming back and JJ start next year as QB2. But, not signing Darnold frees up $$ to be spent elsewhere. Also something nobody is talking about....Whats the Daniel Jones plan? Maybe Darnold walks and Jones competes with JJ for QB1 next year? Don't doubt for a minute that KOC cannot "fix" Jones like he did Darnold.
I am glad at least Florio is getting the conversation going: there just aren't that many teams desperate for an expensive free agent qb this offseason. Been saying this for weeks. The most realistic possibility is tennessee moving on from levis and paying darnold. He is not going back to NY or panthers. I would be really surprised to see raiders or giants sign him. I can't see any of the bird teams swapping their current qb for darnold. Vikings may luck out and sign darnold somewhat cheap. There has been such bad deals given to qb lately the market is gonna correct itself and darnold, unfortunately for his bank account, might be the first example of such.
What is Mccarthy's ceiling? Best case scenario? Isn't it a top 10 level qb who has the team at 12-2 with a legit shot at the #1 seed in the NFC? If we have the guy doing the thing we are looking for why not take it? I agree we need to see the playoffs. If the vikes lose in rnd 1 to LAR then yeah we walk away. But much past that is a great outcome.
You all are missing the enormous advantage the Vikings really have. Cousins and Darnold had their best seasons under KOC. This team has what very few teams have … an ELITE coaching staff, including a QB whisperer, that isn’t subject to a salary cap. KOC and Flores will get paid and the team will absolutely be able to get very good QB play out of JJ next year with an even better defense and OL … and it will only cost the Vikings $4.9M for their QB. They will use all the remaining cap space they have for 2025, and they have a lot, to make the rest of the team even better around him. If Darnold comes back, it’s going to be at a very reasonable price, or like Cousins, he’ll go elsewhere.
There are SOME teams in the NFL who might be thinking they are just one QB away from being a true contender. Certainly Darnold won't seriously entertain the thought of joining the Giants, Jets, Titans or Raiders. But teams like the Colts, Saints or Seahawks or the Vikings again could be a fit, if their salary cap has some gymnastic capability! Maybe Sam gets the luxury of picking and choosing for himself since he will be a free agent.
It's simple to me stick to the plan and take advantage of a rookie qb deal let Sam go get his money, maybe sign Jones as a backup if it doesn't cost much, but to afford upcoming free agents on their own roster and potential free agent targets and draft picks
Sam Darnold will either A) stay with the Vikings, or B) replace Stafford with the Rams, or C) replace Purdy at SF … he’ll want to play for a coach “who gets it”, even if that means he doesn’t get the huge paycheck. Winning trumps money because ultimately enjoying the job will pay off big. Going to the Giants or the Jets would be a horrible idea.
Sam is a good QB, stop tying him to my Vikings. We have 75 mil in cap space and will put together a Super Bowl O line and D and JJ will do as good if not better than Sam. Sam wins us a superbowl by his play and his play alone, let’s talk
Kirk Cousins going to another team and getting benched proves that it was never him that got them to 13-4 in 2022 and that it was KOC's system.. vikes don't need to pay a hundred million dollars for a qb. Also look at what happened with the Tennessee Titans when Tannehill had ONE good season finally.. they signed him to a big deal and than he just kept getting worse and worse.
Rich’s take on Sanders and Ward is exactly what bungling teams do by drafting a QB higher than they’re evaluated. You don’t just take a QB because he’s the next best one, even if you need one badly. Because you then by pass better players while likely committing years to the overdrafted QB hoping he succeeds. Neither Saners nor Ward are top 10 worthy. Darnold had a better skill set and was viewed as a better prospect than either. Minnesota should put the non-exclusive tag on Darnold and see if someone wants to trade for him. If I’m the Giants, especially if their HC survives, I’d give a 2nd this year and a conditional 4th in 2026 that can go up to a 2nd. Then trade back in the 1st this year, recouping the 2nd plus more draft capital. Have an out after 2 years with Darnold, and if he sucks in 2025, use the extra draft capital to try and get Arch Manning. Give me Darnold, players at other positions in the 1st & 2nd, and the additional draft capital over either Ward or Sanders and their 2nd rnd pick.
It would be really stupid for the Vikings keep the unproven rookie instead of Darnold who is already playing like a franchise QB. Just because he was a first round pick... It is not like JJ has such promise in the first place, he looked really limited during that Michigan Natty. For a reason they barely drew the ball.
Holds the ball way too long, almost every game comes down to the very end because of bad decisions and a few bad throws. The defense is why they are 12-2. A big contract for darnold and there's no money left to fix the below average offensive line, they need a quality center in the worst way and two quality guards. JJ would do just fine behind a good line. Plus on his rookie deal other moves could be made. Don't be fooled by a one year wonder.
Sam Darnold is Minnesota’s quarterback for the foreseeable future. The Vikings have all the leverage. It’s just cream on top that we’ll have a great backup on a rookie deal for the next four years.
What about this scenario. Darnold gets offered big money and goes away because the Vikings have figured out that football is a team game and the quarterback is just one of 53 players and won't pay a quarterback big money. O'Connell wants to get McCarthy a year to learn on the sideline before putting him in the line of fire. Atlanta is paying Cousins so the Vikings could get him cheap. After all as well as Darnold is playing this year Cousins was quite a bit better last year with a mediocre defense while Darnold's has been elite. Cousins had 19% more yards, 12% more touchdowns and 62% less interceptions when put in the same offense. Everyone is cooing about Penix right now but his quality start in his first game was the third worst by a Falcons quarterback this year. Not counting the Raiders game when the coaching staff wouldn't allow the quarterback to participate and as a result came within an inch of losing to the worst team in the league. An added footnote the two games that Kirk had that were worse than Penix' game were against elite defenses, not the Giants.
You do not let a top 5 clutch QB with a big arm and athleticism just walk away no matter what you THINK you have with a rookie QB when you have a team that can win now. You do that and you will he mocked fog your idiocy for decades!
Darnold needs to compete with a rookie that won with defense and running game in college? He isn't winning games handing off most of the time in the NFL.
This is not that difficult of a decision. Only way you don't sign Darnold to a 2-3 year deal at this point is if he loses the next three games and the first playoff game... He's proven that he has the physical talent and he fits perfectly with this staff and team. I have no idea why people are so excited about a totally unproven JJ Mccarthy with a knee injury? He can play behind Darnold like many future superstars have. JJ isn't that great everybody needs to settle down...
As a Vikings fan, this conversation is wack, I ain't care about nothin Sam Darnold until he wins playoff games, especially a superbowl, I'm tired of mid QBs, and so far he has played like an upper mid QB that'll be a 1st to second round exit until proven otherwise. And we got plenty of years with JJ to get things right, Sam Darnold only has this year until he demands too much money for our roster to be good.
It’s not wack. The Vikes are 12-2 with him and he looks really good. This isn’t like when they won with Case Keenum because the defense was so stacked, Darnold has been awesome at times. JJ on a rookie contract however would give the chance to stack up the rest of the team.
@@ancapgrandscribe9546 you’re 100% correct man don’t listen to the disgusting Darnold truthers. Half the league could put up the same or better stats on this team. This Class of QBs might end up being one of the greatest ever.
Unless Darnold takes a discounted deal.
The Vikings are focused on the game in Seattle and nothing else. They have an opportunity to be a special team, I think they can run the table and get a first round bye and home field throughout the playoffs. That's a fast track to the big one.
Florio should preface his comments about this decision to point out he was wrong AF about Cousins last Feb.
Folks still don’t understand it’s KOC and the system, Darnold will NOT be anywhere as good elsewhere.
No.
49ers will be willing to pay Darnold. I think Shannahan would be happy to have him back... Purdy obviously isn't the answer!!
Darnold is a big part, if not the major part, of why the Vikings have gotten this far.
All depends on the post season, if he plays good and they win, he'll get a contact with the vikes
Keep Sam and let golden boy JJ sit and learn
12-2-0 vs 0-0-0
40 million next year vs. 5 million
Go with what you know works, not with what might work.
There's no decision to be made it's JJ's team. Good job Sam have fun in free agency.
Sam Darnold is Minnesota’s quarterback for the foreseeable future. The Vikings have all the leverage. It’s just cream on top that we’ll have a great backup on a rookie deal for the next four years.
Only if JJ is a complete bust. He’ll either walk or get franchise tagged. Vikings are not likely toto give him a big long term deal.
Leverage?.. he's only under contract for this year
Gotta keep Darnold
You certainly won't have to pay Darnold to appease vikings fans. We understand the cap
You do that and you will he mocked fog your idiocy for decades!
maybe Rams if Stafford retires? Tag and ship for draft picks 2nd and 5th
No reason the vikings couldn't make the guy a fully gaurnteed offer of 1 year fifty million if they make the Superbowl to try and run it back
Vikings deserve to lose for a decade if they let Sam walk.
McCarthy all day i aint paying for a QB unless sam proves it in playoffs
Darnold needs to compete with a rookie that won with defense and running game in college? He isn't winning games handing off most of the time in the NFL.
This is not that difficult of a decision. Only way you don't sign Darnold to a 2-3 year deal at this point is if he loses the next three games and the first playoff game... He's proven that he has the physical talent and he fits perfectly with this staff and team. I have no idea why people are so excited about a totally unproven JJ Mccarthy with a knee injury? He can play behind Darnold like many future superstars have. JJ isn't that great everybody needs to settle down...
Good problem to have.
Sound like a true fan? Enjoy what you have…McCarthy’s chances of being good are slim…be realistic like a true fan
@@josephdaly2041 Yeah well I ain't convinced of anything until playoff success.
@@jons.9731 You ain't know ball if you don't think JJ can be good under O'Connel's system.
@@ancapgrandscribe9546 you’re 100% correct man don’t listen to the disgusting Darnold truthers. Half the league could put up the same or better stats on this team. Thankfully Kwesi and KOC are smart enough to know that. Unlike all the fans that wanna give him the key to the city. JJ will be awesome on this team and about 40M cheaper to build a juggernaut
All the fans sayings sam can go cause we can make any qb good are the same fans who wanted kirk cause he was going to win us a super bowl .
Rams if Stafford retires. Franchise tag sam trade for picks
Sam will continue to ball with the LA Rams
Vikings just got out of a contract like cousins go the cheap route with jj
What do you mean if you love something set it free? if you love something you keep it. If Donald wins a playoff game, Minnesota will re-sign him.
Noone credits josh mccown at all
Look at you 😂
AMAZON SUCKS THE NFL NEEDS TO GO BACK TO CABLE
Yeah but I like those commercials. Whoooooo!!!
You tell me the Vikings would roll the dice on a rookie QB if Darnold wins a playoff game?JJ Mcarthy could end up being a porcelain doll.
Darnold will take less money to stay here with KOC. What team would he want to play for next year other than us? SKOL4LIFE
I’m a native Minnesotan and lifelong Viking fan. Since Bud retired the only season(s) I thought they were championship caliber was 1998 and maybe 2009. We all know how those two ended. I’ve seen this movie too many times. This 2024 version is a good team that has massively overachieved. It’s just a matter of time before it all implodes yet again. I truly hope I’m wrong but deep down I know I’m not.
Seattle beats MN 27-20. Sorry vikes fans. Hope im wrong. Skol
People forget MN has Jones on the practice squad. Basically volunteering and wanted to. Jones is about the same talent level as Sam IMO. So they really have 3 QB's to choose from. Also seems the vikings are not trying to get a top QB. But spend that money on top receivers and o-line. Cousins did not produce to the level he was and is getting paid. PERIOD.
Crazy talk
Boaf
Simple. If he wins the superbowl hand him a blank check. . . Nfc championship appearance negotiations. . . 1 and done bye bye...
