1. I'm not sure it's a local snack.
2. Zemesriekstu šerbets (zeme - earth + rieksts - nut) - a peanut sherbert
3. "Kārums", of course, it's a must!
5. "Vāverīte" - 'little squirrel", sure it has nuts in it.
"Laima" - it's the same name as of the old Baltic goddess of fortune and happiness, still a popular female name, also sounds similar to "laime" - Latvian "happiness"
If you are going to try "Riga Black Balsam" don't drink it on it's own (some people do drink it straight, I can't). I believe it's usually served on the side of a coffee cup. OR - drink it as is, but drink the black currant version of it, it's tasty on it's own. Also, try pouring a couple of teaspoons of Black Balsam over an ice cream - it will give a combination of bitterness, sweetness, cold and burning of strong spirits in your throat all at the same time.
P.S. I'd also recommend "Lāči" little triangular biscuits/cookies, they are not cheap, but really good, there are several kinds of them.

TotalRookie_LV - Yes, #1 is a local snack! "Bišu Šūnas"" (" Bee Honeycomb) its corn puffs with caramel... hard or soft (or both) caramel (can also add condensed milk)+butter+corn puffs...
Home made are great! It's suppose to be made in a bee-hive shape and when you cut it, each slice looks like honeycomb... I have never had store bought, but home made are really yummy!

The "kuki-muki" candy is supposed to taste like caramel, but I don't enjoy it either, when my grandma makes it's really delicious-It's made from small corn "cookies"(idk how they're called)and melted toffee candy it's really easy to make, you should try to make it❤️

Also! I recommend you to go to this place called ''AB park'' short for ''Emergency Brigade'' Park (I think). It's not in Riga, but near there, i believe, just look up ''ABpark.lv'', it has dinosaurs. :)

There are some other sweets you should try:
Vanilla zephyrs in chocolate by Laima;
Almond triangle cookies with honey by Lāči;
Marzipan in dark chocolate by Skrīveru saldumi;
Žagariņi by Staburadze.

All of these other sweets mentioned here are awesome, especially the Zefīras and Mārcipans no Skrīveru Saldumi.
Orange Kārums cheesecakes are classic, they are very old-school, Latvians love it from childhood. They started making other flavors quite recently.

I lived there for 2 years (June 2016 - July 2018) and one of the biggest mistakes of my life was ever leaving and returning to the UK. I would go back to Latvia today if I could!

If I had to pick salted herring from supermarket would be my snacks or something like that - helps with that hangover from 3 graudu vodka or strong beer
they come in box in salt water by 3 and best part is when you cut fish open you never know is it a male or female - I like both eggs or that white stuff - that is the best part, i don't know how you say that in english

I moved to Latvia many years ago from the UK. I left for a bit after finishing my studies but I returned because I missed it so badly. Some Latvians who might see this comment may know me.
Anyway, one of the first things I tried was a Kārums curd snack. I had never seen anything like it before, much less tasted something like it. At the time I thought it was too much but I really developed a taste for them. In hindsight, you know you're in Latvia when you bite into a Kārums, and if you love them, part of you becomes Latvian. The other two Baltic States, Lithuania and Estonia produce their own curd snacks and all three countries sell their products in each other's countries.

Speaking about that Kuki Muki thing, there is another brand Liepkalni (specializing more in bread baking). They have similar sticks with rich caramelised condensed milk taste and softer texture. I love them, but since they are quite difficult to find, looked for something similar, and guess what I found in my local store? Kuki Muki. Not even close.

Mmm, I love šerbets so muchh!! I used to eat these a lot lol. And, kārums were my childhood! They’re so good ahh xD. Those Latvian chocolates are so tasty too heh. Just got so much nostalgia from this video, my whole family is Latvian and I moved to England, Latvia is such an amazing place and has the best sweets honestly lol.

Try a candy named “Gotiņa” it is a caramel candy that is slightly crunchy but mostly soft and liquid

Lesson from me: letter š it has a lil upside down hat you pronounce it like you pronounce sh like you can but š in shock šock and when there is a line on top of the letter like ā Ā it makes it longer like aaaaaaaaaaa but not like screaming hope this helps!❤️

Karums means "craving" . Laima is pronounce "lie-ma" the small clock tower in the city is from this company. Laima is the old pagan Latvian goddess of fate, from which we take the word laime, which means luck. I'm glad you enjoyed most of the treats you tried!
