The reason why most foreigners mispronounce Latvian words are because they try to pronounce them as they would the words in their own language - the accents usually are all wrong. And most people try to pronounce our soft consonants the same way as the hard ones (so, they think that k and ķ are pronounced the same). The easy trick is to try and find similarities in your mother tongue. For example, sh = š, the letter g is almost dž, ch = č etc. Although I will admit z finding similar sounds to soft consonants is hard. 😅
Latvian language is difficult for english speakers. But the easy part of it is that you pronounce exactly how its written. So basically you only need to learn how to pronounce 33 letters. A big one is S and Š. S - Like in Snake Š - Like in Shore
Except those 33 letters are used for 35 sounds. XD Besides then comes diphtongues: ai, au, ei, eu, ie, oi, ui (I guess I forgot some) one of which is spelled with a single letter "o" - pronounced as diphtongue "uo" in Latvian words OR typical English "oh" in loan words.
I don't agree to that I was born in Latvija and speak Latvian every day her pronunciation wasn't awful but definitely needs some work.My advice would be to go to Google or seri or whatever ,ask every letter translated every letter from English to Latvian an practice at least once a day. However I do love watching her struggle to pronounce the words she should carry on

You did very great pronouncing Latvian words!!! I Live in Latvia and almost no one knows what Latvia is so I’m very happy to see that American people know about Latvia 🇱🇻 🇱🇻
I haven’t laughed so hard in a long time. I guess because it reminds me of myself trying to pronounce Latvian words. I’m currently learning the Latvian alphabet, which I believe is the key to their pronunciation. I read another comment which stated that the way it’s written is the way it’s pronounced and spoken. This gives we Americans an advantage over Latvians who are learning English. I’m also working on vocabulary before I attempt the grammar. Being the richest and most powerful nation in the history of the world supplies we Americans with the arrogance to live in a foreign nation without learning their language. Jess, you are a very sweet woman for posting this video and very brave for leaving your native country to live in a foreign land. I wish you all the best. From your accent, I think you are a fellow midwesterner?
Not too bad! Latvian is not very easy to pronounce for English speaking people but overall it wasn’t bad. If you learn all 33 letters, then it’s pretty straightforward. Ņ, Ļ, Ķ etc needs more practice coz there aren’t such sounds in English language. Also, in the sentence “Es mīlu Latviju”, “Latvija” ends with “u”, because Latvian has an extensive grammatical case system and the endings of words do change depending on the sentence. There are 7 cases in Latvian language for nouns, pronouns and adjectives. So, for example, when one asks:” What is it?” in Latvian, then you might reply: Latvija. But if asked:”What do you love?”, then you’d say:”Latviju”. It’s bit complicated :) In English all you do is add prepositions such as to, from, in, about and etc. You don’t change the ending of the word. Hope you understood. Well done anyway 👍🙂
The soft k and l sounds are difficult and unfamiliar to english speakers. Even some Latvians have a hard time saying soft k. Especially the ones coming from Latgale region. But soft n shouldnt be that hard. Its pretty much the same sound that many english speakers say at the beginning of such words as new or nuisance. Just use that same sound and it will sound very much like soft n.

I don't know who recommended the word "pretējpulksteņrādītājvirziens", as such word doesn't exist in Latvian. Counterclockwise translates as "pretēji pulksteņrādītāju kustības virzienam". Those are 4 separate words not a compound. I work as a translator, so I know.
Absolutely! There is no word "pretējpulksteņrādītājvirziens". This miracle is created by sticking 4 different words together (pretēji, pulkstenis, rādītājs, virziens). And the first one is not even a noun or adjective. Sometimes it's possible to compose two words into one compound. For example dzīvžogs (dzīvs + žogs) = hedge.
I can understand how difficult pronunciation must be for those who have English as their mother tongue. I was born in Latvia, but moved to Ireland at one month old. I grew up speaking English with my sister and friends, but Latvian with my parents. It was only almost two years ago, that my family and I moved back to Latvia after 12 years of residing in Ireland, and I barely knew a thing in Latvian. I've been living in Latvia for a year and a half now, and my language has strengthened. I'd say the most important thing when learning a language is time and trying. Personally, I think you did well. 😊
You did pretty well on some words. And a big part of latvian is that we pronounce the last letter as well, for example chocolate the e is silent pretty much but in latvian we say it. In latvian there aren't letters that are silent we say them all (pretty much). And you said atā very well.😊
Here are few words that we use in Ventspils: Driķeris - a door handle, Ķocis - basket for firewood, Ķēķis - kitchen, Ķisenis - pillow, Deķis - blanket, Tutenis - Knife, Šuplāde - drawer, Ķemers - Toilet. I suggest to check with Google translate at first, many Latvians do not use these words. Also, try saying Sklandrauši - Kurland's delicacy.
Greetings form London Just wanted to say You are doing really well :) well done new languages are hard and I think you do better than most people I ve heard learning Latvian ;)
There is no word "kaksis" in Latvian. Poop is "kaka". This another form maybe spins around somewhere in deep country where yahoos try to make so style.
I just love the way you said cat. When you said it it sounded like poop in Latvia. When you tried saying pretējpulksteņrādītājvirziens I was just thinking how my family say that everyday and we don't see any problem saying it but looking how long it is I just can't believe that it's so easy to say

The counter-clockwise, as far as I know would never be a single word (string of letters). So it would be split into counter=PRETĒJI clockwise=PULKASTEŅA RĀDĪTĀJA VIRZIENAM and the last part consists of 3 words that I'd translatte for this specifick situation as clock (pulkstēna) arm (rādītāja), as in clock-arm and last is direction (virzienam). And I hope you read this and it's not pointless but the other problem is with words in latvian having a different form (conjugation, i think it's called in English) depending from weather you talk about past, present, future and/or male, female words.
I know that i have just 10 years and i am latvian but i think you are so good at speak latvian cus are other people who even dont know how to sey hi. So i realy love how try
For English and American people this is really hard. I know it. I've been studied in Grammar School of Nordic languages from 1st grade. We had American teacher of English. And she was almost as beauty as You. She only spoke to us in English. She was very nice. So snake would be "čūska" in Latvian which is like tschū[long u]ska, kaķis is katjis. Basically You can use j before any letter that has , under. In Latvian it is called mīkstinājuma zīme [miikstinaajuma ziime]. Č makes "Ch' like in 'church', and š makes "Sh" like in 'shallow'. As You might have noticed long line on top of the letter means it's prolonged like man named Ārons (Ahron), but not always efforted. Usually most effort comes on beginning of the word. Pretējpulksteņrādītājvirziens? XD Yes I can say that. Even not being sober. But that's too much I guess... That's teasing... Sorry for that. I don't think somebody even uses that these days. Narrow railroad is classie! XD I tried to teach it my Swedish friends, and they like:"You must be joking, right?!" We love You sister always forever.
Hey i am Latvian that lives in America and ik how you feel tying speak different language. In USA saying "th" or any words with "w" is hard and other things that dont make sense is frustrating to say.
I learnt English from the age of 5 and TV shows really helped out my teachers said I was a tragic child that won't be able to speak English well enough for people to understandand don't know why but something clicked and I speak with a Australian accent and am the top of my class
The counterclockwise is actually a whole sentence in Latvian just without spaces Pretēj - against Pulksteņ - Clock Rādītāj - showing Virziens - way Pretējpulkstenrādīājvirziens - against clock showing way(counterclockwise)
Hello from Latvia. Damn its pretty cool to look how u tryin some of our words! 😅🤚👍😁 And thanks to cool Latvians who suggested nice words! Not some *vulgar ones! 👍👍👍 And you were pretty good at it!👍😁🤚
I've known English for years now, 12 to be exact. And I am 16, so that's a surprise even for me. I wanted to know, what was the reason to move to Latvia?

Hey sis. So I will give you a little lesson. (: In latvian we pronounce 'c' as the 'z's in pizza. AND (update) if you see a little line on the letters (example: ē, ū, ī, ā) it means that you need to kinda say it like "ee", "uu", "ii", "aa". Was it helpful?
I learned english wen i was 5! I love seeing pll try latvian! You should try Pulkstenis-clock Sieviete-female Vīrietis-male Uzredzēšanos-bye in a formal way And some city's Venstpils Daugavpils Rīga Sigulda I hope to see more of your vids!
So it was really funny to watch you because I am Latvian and I understand that the you have problems with speaking Latvian words because we have some what stuff on letters I don't know how that is in English because I'm not very good at the English so but the important thing is that you doing fine it was really fun to watch you thanks for posting this video
Heyy some bit of advice like you could say it and then Google it how it sounds or you could ask a Latvian friend or do a live on insta and people your fans can tell you if it's right. Btw loved your vid and I hope you do another part

For me, as a Latvian, I find the accent very hilarious. Since you thought "pretpulksteņrādītājvirziens" was hard, I have a challenge "Meningoencephalomyeloradiculoniritis" translation: "Meningoencefalomieloradikuloneirīts" which is the longest word in Latvian. (35 letters)
I'm actually gonna write this comment in english because it's easier. But I'm proud for you ! You tried your best to talk in Latvian! I actually want to meet you but I live in a country land thing / Laukos So I need to be in the car for 2h 😬 But still ! You did a great job.
Omg hi. I’m from Latvia and only issue I see is that you have to work on how to pronounce like ķ and ņ and č and all those but GIRL IM IMPRESSED. Keep on the good work 😝💕 hope you enjoy our little country. Latvian is really hard so I’m truly impressed. And to Answer your question, yeah we can say the word pretējpulksteņrādītājvirziens ☺️💕

As You might have noticed
long line on top of the letter means it's prolonged like man named Ārons (Ahron), but not always efforted.
Latvieši lūdzu nospiež like :,3
Labi padarits🇱🇻
Hey i am Latvian that lives in America and ik how you feel tying speak different language. In USA saying "th" or any words with "w" is hard and other things that dont make sense is frustrating to say.
I learnt English from the age of 5 and TV shows really helped out my teachers said I was a tragic child that won't be able to speak English well enough for people to understandand don't know why but something clicked and I speak with a Australian accent and am the top of my class
The counterclockwise is actually a whole sentence in Latvian just without spaces
Pretēj - against
Pulksteņ - Clock
Rādītāj - showing
Virziens - way
Pretējpulkstenrādīājvirziens - against clock showing way(counterclockwise)
Thanks for breaking the words down for me :)
Jess on a Quest no problem! ❤️

Yes, thank you!
I learned english wen i was 5!
I love seeing pll try latvian!
You should try
Pulkstenis-clock
Sieviete-female
Vīrietis-male
Uzredzēšanos-bye in a formal way
And some city's
Venstpils
Daugavpils

Sigulda

Yes and tourism is growing everyday!
Im latvian, im 13 years old, and i learned english from youtube, and i'm pretty good including my accent.
That's amazing!
I’m Latvian and our language is flat in like English whear you work a lot with your tough. Tev loti labi samāca!
Good job! I am a Latvian living in the u.s.! Glad you enjoy Riga!❤
I love Riga!!
You did great, Jess! You kinda sounded like someone trying to pronounce Latvian words with a french accent to me.
Omg!
Aww you are really good in Latvian language im Latvian btw :3
You are doing a great job! I live in Australia but speak Latvian and great try!
I'm actually gonna write this comment in english because it's easier.
But I'm proud for you ! You tried your best to talk in Latvian!
I actually want to meet you but I live in a country land thing / Laukos
So I need to be in the car for 2h 😬
But still ! You did a great job.
Paldies!!!
You are so sweet!! Thank you for your comment
Not many know beside lavians there is latgalians who have they're language called official as dialect of latvian, but they dnt understand us fully :)
Es mīlu Latviju. In fact this is correct, because in a certain sentence there is a inflection of words in latvian.
Thank you for this! Was fun.
Thanks for watching!!
