Why The Millennial Generation Is The Hardest Generation Alive

- Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN dropped just over a month ago and one song has stuck with me more than any other he’s ever released. XXX. It’s absolutely one of the hardest joints on the project, but in an unconventional way. It’s the type of track that reps for an entire generation. This week's TBD looks into the undercurrent surrounding K. Dot's potent commentary on America.

As a Millennial, I hope the one thing we can learn as a whole, is that we shouldn't hate on future generations. We get a lot of hate, some deserved, most not. But the last thing i want to do is treat the next couple of generations the way we were treated as a whole. I also want to leave the world better off for them than what was given to us. Sounds lame, but I'm just being honest.
Youre just being a Millennial! There's nothing lame about not hating on people while handing them a bag of craptasticness. I hope for the same, Jeremy. Thanks for checking the video.
Kinda on topic with what Jeremy said, I wrote my college essay about generational gaps and how it's destroying society. It involved anecdotal evidence of showing my dad Hell Of a Life because it sampled from Black Sabbath. Ofc, he didn't like it, but he didn't hate it because of the overuse of the n word or how Kanye is a crazy person that only stupid millennials like.
HAHAHA @ "Kanye is a crazy person that only stupid millennials like." That sounds like a fun essay topic, though. I've been researching this stuff for a while as well. What reasons did you argue as to why or how they're destroying society?
college essay, so its basically limited to 500 words. also gotta make it look good for colleges so i more or less talked about my self and experiences and added a "revelation" at the end that if generations mix and share culture with each other society will bond together and peace and all that. so not a lot of substance to respond to your question sadly
however, the best I can say is I talked about how I hate the incoming freshman class and their annoying memes and shit. But once I got to know them I made some great and funny friends. I talked about how while baby boomers also call out millennials, i did the same to my own generation for no reason (which you talked about haha).
i agree but fuck trap that shit aint worthy
woah, first time Justin actually has the answer to these questions 😱😱😱
Ha! You sure? ... TBD.
+The Company Man Media Just realised that TBD stands for "to be decided" too lol *MIND BLOWN*
Or it could stand for The Break Down... IJS, I don't have the answer to these questions.... TBD
Akthentik Works or "To be discussed"
i thought it stood for the break down lmao
This channel is ESSENTIAL for any true hip hop fan
Thank you!!
@plastic144407 As far as most of the discussions go yes, absolutely. Though I prefer Hip-HopDX's content personally.
Johnny don't wanna go to school no mo, no mo!
Johnny said books ain't cool no more, no mo

Johnny caught a body yesterday out hustlin'.
God bless America, you know we all love him.

I've been telling these haters since day one, this is by far one of the best songs on the album. When the siren goes off, shit goes super hard.

You're spoiling us with those references Justin!

Agreed.
"And coal... WHO CARES ABOUT COAL?!"....Justin put that on a shirt
Dope idea!!!
Forreal. I'm buying that shirt
Coal isn't even a large part of American energy.
This might be one of your best videos. Amazing, great job Justin
agree
Thank you Myles! I was a bit nervous about this conversation but I'm glad it came across well. Much appreciated!
The Company Man Media well said keep up the good work Justin, xxx and feel are my two favorite tracks off of Damn I have those on repeat. I almost feel like were kindred spirits I love hip hop like you do.
The Company Man
What year were you born Justin?
You should do a video on the albums on the wall behind you! I've listened to almost all of them, and I wanna know why they're there. Great vid like always!
Definitely coming! Thanks Matt!

Wild world we're in, Justin. Wild world. Great to see you on the new channel.
My favorite part is the obvious hypocrisy when he says "Alright kids, we're gonna talk about gun control" after decribing how he would kill a guy.
I know it wasn't exactly Kendrick's point, but I think that's a mindset a lot of people have nowadays. They're anti-violence and anti-hate, yet they will use violence and hate whenever they deem necessary.
As the Handmaids Tale might say "Praise Be!!" Ha! that's a great point. I crack up everytime I hear that part. I feel like that's what our elected leaders do all the time. I feel like athletes when they get in trouble do that. I feel like I have homies who cheat on their girl complaining about their girl cheating on them. Hypocrisy is everywhere and he captures that so succinctly it's amazing. Thanks, Billy.

Mr E Man Very nice breakdowns indeed
XXX quickly became my favorite Kendrick song. The last minute and a half or so is, to me, why Kendrick is not only the vanguard of hip-hop, but contemporary music as a whole.
Thank you so much for the shout out!!! Millennials are the hardest generation because we are persistent about questioning the status quo. We're also a mixed bag. Most of us have experienced life before and after the internet as we know it. Some of us haven't, and that may be why there's some criticism within our generation. However, I just said to my best friend last night that Millennials are smart as fuck....... and WE ARE! We've been able to change with the times. My parents still haven't learned that google is their best friend lol. I am excited for the future; Millennials care a lot more about everything because of the internet (shout out to Gambino ;) ), and I think it's going to be a very interesting ride. Ab-Soul said the DAMN album was for our generation, and I agree. The topics covered in the album touch on the variety of subjects that we care about. AND THAT COACHELLA SET WAS CRAZY CREATIVE!!!!
Side note: I wrote about Kanye in my 10th grade American Literature class. The assignment was to write about a song that has the american dream as the subject (my teacher was a HUGE Bruce Springsteen fan). For me, it was between "All Falls Down" by Kanye and "Juicy" by Biggie. I chose Kanye because it was more relatable, and I got an A on it. It was one of the best papers I've ever written. I wish I still had a copy.
@Flyy Science You seem like a very surface level kinda person and Google is not your best friend. It tracks you, is known to filter bubble results & invades your personal information & privacy. DuckDuckGo & Qwant are your best friend & I'm 16 but it doesn't matter because my mind is older.
@@emanatingf Needlessly adding negativity to something that was a bit encouraging in the first place does not denote an older, mature mind. You're still a kid and there's nothing wrong with that. Just don't be something you aren't.
What year were u born in?
How you feeling about Kanye now?!? You should've gone with "Juicy"! 😆
"ain't no black power when your baby killed by a coward"

PRIDE
Aunt Jemima knows what's up. Best tracks on the album (though I'd also add in FEEL.)
Fear is def my fav rn
Imo pride is the best song on the album but the album in general was great.
This channel is legendary.
Quick note: i viewed the second part of XXX as a critique against himself. kendrick has shown he is very self aware ("where was your antennas" on "U"). and can self critique (like 'misusing his power on' "these walls").
To me on "XXX", kendrick is calling out his, 'preachy' or 'ivory tower' messages. It's easy to say to be non violent when your not in a violent neighborhood anymore. It's easy to tell kids in Compton that 'guns arn't cool' when you only visit Compton now.
On "XXX" Kendrick is admitting that if he was in the same situation -like his kid being killed, he would engage in the same cycles of violence that he lectures people to resist. Maybe he's backing down from his 'gang bangers are hypocrites' and 'how can we(black people) expect anything (not to get killed) if we dont respect ourselves' rhetoric he had during the To Pimp a Butterfly cycle.
There's a great piece on Ambrosia For Heads that cosigns a lot of what you're saying, but spread out across the album. I can definitely see your theory fitting this song. It's not too far away from what Kendrick described in the zane lowe interview, even though he didn't go into super detail on this track. I tried to be careful as to not say that Kendrick was intentionally speaking up for millennials, as much as the way he describes the things he talks about also have parallels to the challenges facing this entire generation and the doubt we receive from those before us as well as within ourselves. Regardless, K.Dot's too deep.
isaiah salgado King kunta
The Company Man Yes, I love the breakdown and the parallels you made to Millenials. For a while now, I have always stated that I don't see myself as a Millenial or that I believe there is a generation gap between the older members of the generation and the younger ones. When I look at someone's mannerisms who is 10 years younger than myself and those who are around my age, I don't feel as though we are in the same generation pool. The breakdown you did, and even when you stated that Millenials are the most hated generation and that Millenials hate on our own generation......I was like, "Wow, that's me"! Definitely made me step back and reevaluate some of my thought processes. I am a proud member of the "HARDEST GENERATION ALIVE"!!!

Im glad he is doing videos like this again, he can articulate his points very well in videos like this.
Harold Jones thanks Harold!
I think this video getting on Reddit really put the new channel on the map. Yesterday you had 1k, today you're close to 3k
Matt Traverso absolutely. That made a HUGE difference
I knew there was a reason that was my favorite song on DAMN. Now that I understand it more, I think it just became my favorite Kendrick track of all time.
Jujitsu Justin....once again creating pictures with poems! Excellence speaks and sometimes speaks for itself. Thank you.
Shouts out to you for using my favorite word. I appreciate you putting amalgamation in rotation
Baby boomers are the original "Me, Me, Me" generation.
@Jessica Rodriguez Quite a lot of the time. But it really boils down to individuals as there's amazing, funny & charismatic old people & young people. Some ppl in that generation are actually very cool, thoughtful & chill. Don't judge a book by it's cover.
every generation is a “me” generation. part of growing up is gaining perspective on yourself, your identity and what you need from society and trying to advocate for it
That generation brought Black Power… wtf are you talking about? They brought internationalist decolonization movements. Be quiet.
Justin You forgot do drop the mic bro
I never understood the whole participation trophy thing.
If you give me a trophy don't be mad at me for accepting it. Don't blame me for the things that you taught or didn't bother teaching me
Exactly.
And like we weren’t fucking idiots no one was proud of participation trophies growing up except our parents. They were awards for parents.
I almost didn't notice how his shirt linked with the video!
I'VE BEEN SAYING THIS SINCE I FIRST HEARD XXX. a month ago!
Nice to see xxx mentioned. My favorite track as well.
At 1917 views and no dislikes!! It shows the quality of material you put out!!! Yeezus, good stuff!!!!
Thank you Aziz!
Amazing video man. I dislike unnecessary hatred towards the youth, it does not help society in any form. Keep up the great work!
You're absolutely correct about that, Brett. Thanks for checking us!
Love the new channel, thank you Justin for widening my knowledge of hip hop! Respect all the way from Ireland 👍

I love this. the extension from hip hop to millennials in the world. 👏👏👏👏
Thank you Dare!
FANTASTIC VIDEO! XXX is great & this video gives me a different aspect to love & understand about it
For real glad you decided to highlight this song. Shit gives me chills every time I hear it.
XXX my second favorite track off the album after Lust
Lust is dope too.
I thought I was the only one who liked Lust best lol. That was the only song I 100% liked when I first listened to the album but no one else was talking about the track
Great work, justin! I'm loving the new channel. I think XXX gets overlooked on DAMN simply because if you are listening to the album from front to back, you already have lyrical fatigue by the time you get to it. At the same time, it is essential to the track listing.
Thank you! Couldn’t believe how many people hated on this song
14000 views , 7 dislikes nice work justin man channel getting better by the day
The most under rated channel!
Im a millenial and this whole millenial hate is absurd. I was raised by my mom, she was a single mother that thought me manners and to work hard, to be a decent person and to not be a fool.
thank you Justin for speaking for the young generation
Thank you odiemonster!
So glad I'm on this channel before it blows up. Loving the new content Justin, still some of the best analysis out there. Glad you have your own space.
I will say though, there's some audio hiccups with your cuts. You're getting some half words that aren't getting properly cut off when you jump to a clip. 3:13 as an example.
Michael Hoff thanks Michael. I hate those too. It was a hiccup with the mic. We had to macguyver the situation. Corrected for next week. Thanks for rocking with us!
awesome breakdown
Thank you!
Roll the clip Ja.... err Ahmed! Great video as always Justin. XXX is definitely one of my favorites off Damn among a handful of other tracks. For me, personally, Damn is his most relatable album and that makes it hit harder. Maybe because I'm an old Millennial? #TBD ....
afroandy2000 I'm with you. It's my favorite project he's released... easy. For me it's the first that didn't feel like great albums or themes from other eras

Great video! Glad to See Justin back on TH-cam, handling the big issues now!! TBD.

On point, as usual. XXX definitely ended up better than I expected!
Keep up the great videos Justin!!!

Yo whats up Justin, i was always a fan of the breakdown, was worried there would never be anything like it again. But im glad to see you with your own channel doing your own thing. This show is dope, keep up the work man.
thanks for the new perspective on such an awesome song!
Thanks for checking it out!
Justin you are the man. Just catching up on this missed episode and I'm still blown away.
I was iffy about U2 on this track an the best part is him an the band at the end
I think a lot of people were. It came out dope though.
This is a damned good video. Really cool seeing Justin do his thing here too
Thank you, EVANS!
Hey Justin, been watching you for a while on HipHopDx and now here, got to say you're one of my favorite hip hop analysts on the internet right now, and I always get excited to check out your videos. This one was no different, AWESOME think piece. If you ever need any ideas for videos or really any help whatsoever, I'm always a message away, for what it's worth haha. Thanks for the incredible content, have a good one man!
That's awesome ACB. Thank you. I'm always open to ideas. Message me your contact. Let's definitely stay in communication.
Was a little worried when you left HipHopDX thinking that your videos might drop in quality, but holy shit it's the exact opposite man, this is probably one of your best breakdowns ever!

DAMN Justin went hard on this one
This video gave my little millennial heart so much self-righteous confidence that I started to feel gross cause I imagined thats what it it feels like to have the mentality of the stereotypical baby boomer
This channel is under rated- you deserve more subs.
Good elaboration, important subject!! We need more people contributing to the discussion about our generations philosophy!!
Also XXX is def up there for me, not enough people mention it.
I love this guys insight and commentary on hip hop.
Great commentary!
Man this video was amazing Justin. Looking forward to the upcoming videos. Keep up the good work!
As soon I saw Justin doing his thing here, sub'd instantly - love this guy. Top guy for any real hip-hop fan!
This song got so overlooked by everyone but I loved it, especially going crazy to the 2nd part

Thank you JonJon!
Company man. This is your best video you knocked it out of the park. But Gen Xers are the best generation alive we created hip hop, the Internet, Smartphones, PCs.
I really do love this piece, Justin.
This video is still brilliant & still is very relevant.

Yo Justin! Glad you have your own channel, you have more freedom and can do more breakdowns...so excited for the future of this channel! Thanks for showing love to everyone in the comments, glad to see a youtuber who appreciates there fans!
XXX is one of my favorite tracks of DAMN. I remember Nguyen the album first came out all the TH-cam or‘s that do album reviews hated that song but I love that shit.
Hunte dude I've missed you on DX but it's nice to see you going for something bigger and better.
Great video and points. I also love the XXX song, not my favorite off DAMN but it makes me mad when I hear people (like Joe Budden and Akademiks) claim that the song is trash simply because "U2 is on it" as if they did not even hear it or something... But yeah, I fully agree with your points.
Bono has 2 four bar vocals. That's barely a collaboration, let alone enough to complain about. Thanks for checking it Sedrick!
The kind of discussions Hip Hop is supposed to bring up! Big up KDot.. Gift to our time.
