      SEVERAL (12) AUNTS, UNCLES, & MY BABY SISTER ARE BURIED IN THE CEMETERY HERE...
      IT RATES RIGHT UP THERE WITH EITHER ONE OF THE "FORREST LAWN" CEMETERIES & MAUSOLEUMS OUT IN CALIFORNIA...
      WE MAY NOT HAVE CELEBRATED BIG NAMES HERE (NO MICHAEL JACKSON'S OR LIZ TAYLOR'S) BUT THIS MAUSOLEUM IS BREATHTAKING JUST THE SAME!!

    Kari..i am very familiar with HSCS,as unfortunately i have been going there my entire life..My maternal grandfather was interred there in 1957, my father was next in 1960. We have a family plot of 12 graves, and its fairly full..My paternal grandparents are buried a short distance away, so i can visit my entire family at the same time..Thanks to my mother's dedication to being organized, i can also see where im going to rest,complete with headstone..Yes,its a little unsettling,because most of us do not get the privilege of seein their name on that piece of granite..But,over 55 years,i have seen the expansion of HSCS and they have a stellar group of people handling business there.. Ron D. is one of the best of the group..best wishes to him..

    Does the head or feet go in first? I always speculated the feet went first and the head would be next to the stone, hence the name head stone.

    If you're ever in New York, one cemetery you should definitely visit is Calvary Cemetery (est.1848) in Queens. Bisected by busy expressways and streets and providing fantastic views of Manhattan from many points within it, Calvary is the best example of an urban cemetery I have ever seen. It is divided into four sections- the oldest being First Calvary- covers approx. 365 acres and with over 3 million interments has the distinction of being the largest cemetery in the US by number of "inhabitants."

    Props to whomever can figure out how to fund a mausoleum's maintenance for hundreds of years. Money systems change and collapse, revolutions happen, depressions, embezzling managers, whatever. At least if you are in the ground there's minimal ongoing cost and if abandoned, you don't have suffer the disrespect of a collapsing and vandalized crypt.

    I’m from Southfield, and my grandparents are buried there. My grandfather died in the middle of winter in the 1970s. The ground was so frozen that they couldn’t dig his grave. They stuck his casket in a storage shed (along with other bodies) until the spring. I shit you not.
    Also, Jay Sebring, one of Charles Manson’s murder victims, is buried at Holy Sepulcher. He grew up in Berkeley.

    Hi Kari, This is the crypt I recently purchased except it is outdoors with a canopy to keep your visitors at least dry.
    Their indoor mausoleum is minimaully heated and cooled so they seldom need any marble repairs. All of the Family of 12 Persons were sold out. and all of the thousand spaces, had only two single spaces remaining, however they were not together. Similar to Holy Seplicar they are getting ready to build another identical community Mausoleum. This cemetery is all different faiths including Jewish and Muslin deceased.
    I had my heart set on a Independent Companion Mausoleum, but I couldn’t justify the cost, thought my family could make better use of the funds. I don’t even want them to know what I spent. That would be a Lotto Winners Crypt.
    In Baltimore they are slightly different. They call this style a “Couch Crypy” they are also placed in the crypt sideways and 2 Caskets Deep. They use the same wrapping system but their tray are connected to a drainage system.. TMI But the wrapping elimnates the usual Indoor odors. You can see it at Dulaney Valley Mem Gardens. The entire place is amazing. if you get a minute google it. Peace

    The Mausoleum had undergone many expansions since it was 1st built..the left wing was the first addition to the building..in the late 1960's..the right wing was done in the late 1980's..and the rear addition was completed in the mid 2000's.. The outdoor annex was completed in 2012 if i remember...along the way in the last 30+ years they have created special sections for clergy and police/firemen...they also have a special section for children only at the back of the property..

    They make you be in the cemetery gates by 2:00 PM which is ridiculous. It is almost impossible for us to have an 11:00 am Funeral Mass and let the family have a funeral dinner immediately after and then make the hour drive from our area west of Ann Arbor. Open/close fees are around $1500.00 too...and to open/close a crypt is probably the same. I was waiting for the gentleman to say that entire lot of crypt spaces "family room" for sale in the mausoleum would run $100,000. Also, you only get a few minutes to do your commital services there too or be prepared to deal with, tractors, dump trucks and a crew with shovels descending on your graveside telling you time is up. Yes, the place is nice, but it is expensive.
    Out my way we have Green's Lakeside Cemetery, (Devils Lake) Manitou Beach, MI, Columbia Twp Cemetery on Lake Columbia near Brooklyn, MI, and Clark Lake Cemetery, South of Jackson, MI and all sit on the shorelines of lakes and are beautiful and run $350-$500 open close fees for comparison and local farmers take care of them and give them TLC.

      I think one of the reasons for the high prices is the fact Holy Sepulchre is the final resting place of the Cardinals and Arch Bishops that have served the Arch Diocese of Detroit. Including Mooney, Scoka and Dearden. No doubt that makes it a premiere cemetery of the Catholic church. I was a night security officer there for about a year and in addition to the Honored men buried there the grounds contain a tranquil pond and spectacular landscaping. So it's likely a positive thought to know you are purchasing a grave amid pastoral splendor and resting with former leaders of the church.

  • @Sharon-pb7so
    @Sharon-pb7so 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    All of my relatives both on my mom's side and my dad's side of the family are buried at Holy Sepulchre. I've been in the mausoleum way too many times, it's where they bring the deceased for a final prayer before burial if the family has declined to go to the grave site.

  • @gramps2matt

    I know your main concern was the mausoleum building in particular but all the grounds of the cemetery are quite spectacular. I was a night security officer there for about a year (someone has to check that all those temp control systems continue working and vandals don't try to desecrate graves) and was amazed at the wildlife the pond attracts from deer to egrets and reptiles (turtles). As I noted in another comment below several of the Cardinals and Arch Bishops of the Arch Diocese of Detroit are buried in a special section on the grounds. The main building you highlighted so well has an organ and tombs are also available on levels in the rotunda. Very impressive place with history and the resting place of Civil Rights Activist Viola Liuzzo as well.

      Sadly we don’t apart from private ones which are more of elaborate family tombs that you find in old or historic graveyards. I think there maybe is one being built somewhere in England but in Scotland we don’t have any. Crematorium sometimes have areas to inter the urns. I find it such a good alternative as sometimes the thing that puts propel of burial is being underground and “being eaten by worms” type of idea. This gives a good alternative. Liners etc are also something that aren’t used here. I could discuss the differences for ages with you. This is why I find your channel so intriguing.

    • @bobbibuttons8730

      Hi Kari no, it’s something I would have loved to do. I was an oncology/haematology nurse specialist till the latter stages of my career where I was involved with patients at the end of their lives and it was a subject lots of patients would discuss especially in the wee small hours when the rest of the world was asleep apart from them. So often I’d have to contact funeral directors and find out things to let me go back to the patient to let me give them their answers. I just saw it as part of the care I provided, if they needed to know, then I’d find it out. It then became an area I was more and more interested in but sadly an accident put paid to a change of career.

    Beautiful. However I see here on TH-cam how many mausoleums quickly fall into disrepair once it is full. Simply too expensive to maintain. You mention how heating and cooling is used to stop the stone from sweating. Just how long can they keep that up ? I know maintenance is built into the purchase price. But that will not last forever. Then vandals take over. And those glass cover ones ? Pretty but foolish to think they will survive forever undisturbed. When even stone covered ones get broken into. At worst a grave will be overgrown. And far less likely to be messed with.

    • @jonathantan2469
      @jonathantan2469 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is owned by the Church, so its far less likely to happen. The ones with problems are usually private mausoleums that run out of money due to declining income, no more money coming in once its full, and increased costs of an aging structure.

    • @texasborn2720
      @texasborn2720 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jonathantan2469 Oh I could not disagree more. Whole diocese have and do go bankrupt. Church owned mausoleums are more prone to budget cuts and being abandoned then private ones. People give money for church staff salary, utilities, helping the poor and so on. Not to pay continuous upkeep of burials of non-family members ? It may be church owned but those are private burials. And non-family members do not and should not pay for upkeep.

    Kari, great video. This looks like a very beautiful place for a final resting place. What you are calling the "cremation niche" is actually called a "columbarium". Many Episcopal (and I believe Catholic) churches will have one built in them for the cremains to be placed in the church. The National Cathedral in Washington D.C. has a beautiful columbarium in it as well as caskets (these are placed throughout the sanctuary and chapels beneath the floors).

    • @jonathantan2469
      @jonathantan2469 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have always thought mausoleum crypts & colombariums were the same... to place the urns with the deceased ashes, or an ossuary with fully decayed bones. Didn't quite expect whole coffins to be placed behind the walls.

    My great grandparents "invested" in a single family unit that held 8. I think they had in mind that family multiply and others would be entombed there. As life would have it, not all the crypts are filled. People marry and have their own families...you get the picture. Its still a nice quiet space to sit and reflect upon who they were and how they loved one another. I hope to be placed there with my spouse after death. No kids so I think its a perfect place to spend eternity.

      Jesus said, "The poor you will always have with you,..." Does that mean we shouldn't help them? No, but as is written in Ecclesiastes, "There is a time to every purpose." Helping the Poor would consist of most of the Corporal Works of Mercy, but Burying the Dead is also one of them. It's not an either/or proposition. We give glory to God in our efforts, and even when we build these great edifices, including the Papal Palace. And when we bury the dead, we do so with the respect due, and knowing that they will rise again on the last day.

    Kari, I hope you get this question. When someone dies and doesn't have a will, if they are married, does the spouse have the legal right to make funeral/disposition arrangements even if they are contrary to what other family members might want?

    • @David49305
      @David49305 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, does each rank get a say or does it go in order. In other words, if there is no legal spouse than it falls to children, etc?

    Thank you Kari! I like mausoleums--you should see the Great Mausoleum in Forest Lawn, Glendale CA where many famous movie stars are buried...looks like a Cathedral...very peaceful. I like that one can sit beside the grave of a loved one regardless of the weather. I would choose one of these.

    I have a question (just curious maybe) my grandmother was laid to rest in her hometown of Louisiana. She is resting peacefully in a vault, however, the vaults sit atop of the ground? I live in CA and though I’m not just hanging around cemeteries often, it just made me wonder what is that called or why are those vaults above the ground?

    • @Sharon-pb7so
      @Sharon-pb7so 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In Louisiana since most of it is below sea level, the water table is very high. Burying someone is taking a risk that the casket will float out of the ground. I know during Katrina many floated and had to be reidentified. Even those in tombs above ground floated. It was very sad.

    Hey Kari! I loved this video! I was wondering, do people go for that new 'eco' burial where it turns them into a tree? I would want to do something like that or get cremated... I hear that new eco thing is very expensive tho lol

      Kari Northey I'm from Cleveland Ohio, I'm sorry I forgot to tell you that on the other video... I just heard about a family burning a family member by a ocean or lake on a pier... I was wondering, Is there certain laws you would have to do to do that?

      Kari Northey I believe it was on TH-cam, but it may have been Indians or Africans in the Amazons that were doing it... I don't remember lol but I had seen that and was curious

    I don't live far from JFK alleged killer that is buried in Texas. People would steal the tombstone from his grave. So the family left it unmarked. The Shannon Hills Cemetery on the east side of Fort Worth doesn't tell people where the Oswald's grave is located. The original casket Oswald was buried in was stolen after Oswald's reburial. The family sued to get the casket back. Thanks for the information. Regards...

      All mausoleums have problems with maintenance. Not just Catholic church. Some even go bankrupt before they get full. So expensive to maintain. TH-cam is full of videos of abandon mausoleums. There is a dark side to mausoleum that needs to be pointed out to people before they buy one. th-cam.com/video/cKf3z8DtTU4/w-d-xo.html
