I remember as a young kid in the after school program this film being played. I didn't really care for it cause unicorns and ferries. But always recalled the scenes of Curry as The Darkness.
It laid a seed that made me figure out what film this was 15 years later or so. And my how great of a film it is.
If your kid doesn't like a film, just force them to watch it when they're older.

Tangerine Dream didn't have anything to do with Blade Runner. That was entirely Vangelis.
Tangerine Dream was connected to Tom Cruise however, as they did the very popular score for Risky Business.

For decades, Legend has been a favorite of mine and easily my favorite Tom Cruise movie... and not even because he’s in it. Mia Sara was amazing and beautiful as Lily, and Tim Curry was phenomenal and perfectly casted as The Darkness. The cast, incredible makeup, and attention to detail are why I’ve loved this movie so much, along with the overall story of a man willing to fight the devil himself to save the woman he loved. Granted, the story does start with the fairies asking for his help to save the unicorns, but it ends with him diving in to protect Lily when he realized that she had not been swayed by the Darkness’ offerings.
I absolutely love the basic story, about how Jack loved Lily and trusted her so much, that even when it looked completely dire and seemed like she was going to kill the other unicorn, Jack had faith that she wouldn’t do it, then she sets the unicorn free, is backhanded by the Darkness, leading to Jack jumping in to protect her, the unicorns, and retrieve the horn. Such an amazing film!
I also prefer the theatrical cut. I’ve seen the Director’s Cut, and as a movie in general, it is a better film overall because some scenes are more fleshed-out, but that Tangerine Dream soundtrack is so amazing and iconic to me, especially Loved By The Sun. I still listen to that song frequently. I also like the theatrical cut’s ending much more, with Jack diving into the lake again, this time recovering the ring that Lily threw in there earlier, then kissing her and awakening her, as Loved By The Sun plays in the background. It’s such a great ending, making more sense to me than Lily realizing she has some flaws, and leaving the man she loves (and who clearly loves her. Hell, he had just fought a mystical demon/devil creature to rescue her!) behind and never seeing him again.

I saw this in theater when it released back in the 80's and I loved it. I was hooked and didn't want the movie to end. I was immersed in the magical world immediately and couldn't get enough. Years later I bought the VHS and eventually the digital directors cut. I still love the original I saw in the theater, but I guess that's because that's how I saw it first. I was a skeptic for some time that they messed up the credits as I couldn't see Tim Curry in Darkness. What a brilliant movie!

Bob Picardo told us at a convention that he was worried he might get REALLY beheaded by the lift that brought him to the surface. He was also concerned that as he had told Customs that he was in the UK for pleasure not work, and the call sheet said Meg Mucklebones for both the Character AND the actor, he thought that if he was killed, he could be buried behind the soundstage, and know one would be the wiser!

Okay, fan-theory time; I've suspected for ages that, much like the famous mountain-footage-in appearing-'The Shining'-story, that there's a very good chance that Scott used some of rhe same unicorn footage for both 'Bladerunner' and 'Legend'! Even I if I'm wrong, I'd like to know for sure. ; ) That being said; a great video as always, and in particular, thanks for bringing to light some of the beautiful subtex in this film that has often overlooked, even back to its original release. Keep it up! =)

Ridley Scott really screwed over Jerry Goldsmith a second time when he obliged the headscratching decision by the Universal CEO to discard his brilliant score for the american market...
First the meddling with Goldsmith's brilliant score in Alien, then with this film.
At least in this case the Director's cut made some ammends for it.

Sid Sheinberg was still CEO of Universal in 1985, and he was incredibly powerful due to decades at the top of Hollywood. You didn't go against his wishes unless you wanted to see your career derailed. Very few directors ever successfully fought against his edicts. Terry Gilliam had to wage a year-long PR battle to stop Sheinberg from totally recutting Brazil, for example.

@Trump4Prison2021 With so much archival and documentary stuff available, no one in their right mind can claim that Scott "created" the xenomorph, on paper OR on screen. O'Bannon and Giger, between them, created it, and "all Scott did" was direct it..which was what brought it to life. No one else could've done with that story what Scott did. Same with Blade Runner, and Legend, and.. well, most films Scott have created.

Great video! This is one of my favorite films, and I've loved it since the 1980s. I prefer the Tangerine Dream score, as it gives the film a darker (almost horror) tone; the Goldsmith score, along with Lily singing, make the European version feel almost like a Disney musical. I've never seen two versions of a film so different: from a Disney-esque musical to a horror film. Either version of the film is visually breathtaking, but the synth score by Tangerine Dream makes the film feel otherworldly, and is the superior score.
