I'm not a street racer, but where I live, getting to a track or an autocross event is a long haul and incredibly expensive unless you live in the next town over which most people don't.
So street racing would be massively more affordable, you get more time to enjoy your car, and aren't tied to the calendar of the race track.
Edit: Just to make it clear, I'm listing some reasons why people go street racing. Not encouraging it.
It's a danger to others as well as yourself. Even if it's thrilling and saves you some of the hassle of going to a track, it's not worth risking lives.

@@I-dont-reply i don't condone street racing. I was just saying why some people go out of their way to do it. I don't have a car and don't plan to go street racing when I do have one. I actively encourage people not to. There are enough dangerous drivers on the road already. I wouldn't want an innocent person to be hurt because someone's decision to go racing on the streets.

Let’s add in another factor. If you crash your car at a track, you are totally screwed. Your insurance does not cover race tracks.
Put your car into a ditch? “Oh no a deer ran out in front of me.” $500 later you have another car. Just saying that’s definitely not a trivial problem for the average person who spends all their money just getting to a track event.

You missed it. During Covid when no one was on the road, street racing was very much alive and well. I've had police flash their lights at us, but I figured they thought it wasn't worth the trouble cause they never pulled us over. That was when you had to have a paper stating you were an "essential worker". Gas was also super cheap. We need to go on lockdown again, lol.

Street racing never left, it was always there, although social media has forced most people to plan it carefully or do it discreetly.
But 2020, definitely got people to drive more often. Gas around my area was 1.35 during that time, and everyone was racing around city limits like there was no tomorrow. But it's sort of back to normal, sort of.

The problem is that LEGAL auto racing is inaccessible for anyone that doesn't make 6 figures.
Road courses? VERY expensive, and several hours away.
Drag strips? The closest ones to me shut down due to noise complaints. Nearest open one is 3 hours away.
Drifting? One track in my state. And also I have FWD, so I can't do that.
Autocross? Nothing. Closest events WERE ~70 miles away, and also still somehow expensive?
at night with some friends? Free and easy.

Not surprised TN made the list. We got the smokeys and windy farm land back roads away from the city.
On top of that, there aren't really any GOOD race tracks without crossing state lines to go to tracks in or near Atlanta.
All those places are pricey so its much easier to just get active on the interstate or up in the mountains.
The mountains cater to well tuned/balanced cars because crazy HP is just gonna land you in a ditch if you cant put it down or handle hairpins. You'll see most people there because its generally cheaper to build a car with turns in mind than build a 60-160 car.

I gave up street racing a long time ago when a friend of mine was killed racing. I have four grown sons and when they were teens, I told them if I ever hear of them racing, I would disassemble their car and have it crushed. I have seen too many accidents, some fatal, resulting from street racing. I'm down with cruising, parking, modifying, and showing off cars, but keep the racing on the track. It's for the good of everyone.

One of the reasons why I left Atlanta, GA.
The "takeovers" were getting out of hand. The street racing and cruises were always being watched by GPD on the ground and in the air.
Me trying to keep up with "the cool kids" was burning a hole in my tank and wallet. Even though I've never been the one to run and get caught; I usually give in and go home after the first or second stop through the city. I'm glad I didn't get too far into that lifestyle, and now I'm in an insanely smaller city in Arizona all for the better. (Knock on MineCraft wood) maybe I can hold out long enough to let my record clean up a bit from my own speeding and I won't go insane in the process.
I also had/chose to leave all the social media behind so no one can find me and I won't stoop to going back out riding with another group. I guess that would be my addiction; the meets, the cruise and running fast.

PINKFLAMINGOUSA brought a lot of bad attention to that area from what I can tell. Mixing underground, rap culture, and fast cars pulled in a lot of heat / bodies to a scene that already had a general disinterest in authority. Maybe I'm speculating too much but those takeovers look like riots with cars. Throw in a couple rap celebs poppin' out for these events and here come a fuck ton of dick riders entering into a space that they have ZERO respect for.
Don't get me wrong though, the content is pretty sick to watch but it for sure could be handled with a bit more grace. I think not too long ago PF finally held something that was regulated on a private / public compound or track. I could be wrong but it seems like they know as a brand going legit is the way to longevity.

Been running 1ll3gal togue up in the mountains(uphill only) and there is no comparison between the two for exhilaration and driver skill required. I loved it when it was going well and like you said no cars and only other like mided idiots were there. Same here in Canada. Sometimes there are warnings for speeding camera and sometimes they put fake warning to slow you down. I've got to know each speeding camera in my city and with the help of Waze or a driving app that detects cameras, it has become easy. I'll be purchasing a radar detector soon too.

My car is a bit modified and so far haven't been pulled over once. I will get tint very soon though. Also, you can get electronic license late flip cover that flips up your license plate with the push of a remote. Its honestly amazing. I was thinking of getting it.

Hi, Hawaii here, to explain that, lots of short bursty bits of curvy road that are fun do drive on here, not to mention, on Oahu specifically, H2 is straight as all hell but filled with so many divets and dents in the road it makes it wildly weird, and H3 has so beautiful views but most importantly has a wonderful tunnel. My personal favorite road, that i drive at a totally reasonable speed on, has next to no drivers on past 9pm, but that's cause people are afraid of driving off a cliff and into the ocean. One other really well known, locally, road is Tantalus with a lot of alleged drifting going on there. Mostly tho why we have a lot of write ups for street racing is as simple as if there are two or more people driving in a "visually competitive nature" on the road, exceeding 15 miles over the posted speed, it counts as street racing. As a fun fact, most of H1 is 45 miles per hour on posted speed, most of everyone who drives on it drives about 60-65 mph, so in order to get the citation, which can lead to a lot of false positives.
edit: also forgot to mention there is no real track on Oahu, and also modified corrado when?

I'm one of those people and I really want to get into street racing. The risk seems fun but it does have its consequences. Play till you can't no more.

Not to mention the excessive track fees on top of the travel fees and times. City governments need to realize that while racetracks don't bring a return on investment, the lives it will save and the joy it will bring will be more than enough to justify itself.

When the stock cars are too fast to just run down the straight for shits and giggles, it's no longer for shits and giggles. When it's not shits and giggles the move to professional circuit.

Short answer: It's still around. It's been here before us and it'll be here after. People are just starting to use license plate covers so no one can record their license plate when they do something illegal. One thing I don't understand is why people race on busy roads. I live in Ohio and I've seen probably 100s of empty backroads that would be perfect. Not the most morally right thing but one of my bucket list goals is to go to a street-race. This has been a major topic in the past month though. I've seen multiple vids addressing street racing within a few days.

I have street raced since I was 13 years old . Even now in my 40s I have a tuned 97 Acura Integra that is built by a tuner and moonshiner and being finished by myself . One of the differences between my tuner and most tuners is its built mainly for evasion . It can handle a dirt road at a 100 plus as easily as a BMW on a paved track ( yeah its sweet ) .
That said , I still enjoy driving it ( though it's in storage now and will be till 2025 for personal reasons ) but I don't really street race any more . The problem I found is movies like Fast and Furious and video games have made people who have no skill or sense of personal responsibility think you simply drive as fast as you can . They also have extreme tunnel vision with no comprehension of their surroundings. This has lead to skilled drivers being a little risky to unskilled drivers being extreme dangers on the road . Because of this not only do I no longer engage in it like I used to but I think most of us , especially from my generation no longer partake in it . It's not that we loss the passion but we don't want to be part of the unprecedented recklessness being wrought by X Box drivers who think THE CREW is how you obtain street skill 🤔

People should learn that there a huge difference between Street Racing and Street Takeovers. The guys and girls who are doing burnouts, donuts, and stupid stunts like hanging outside of their cars are called Street Takeovers. Those clowns are the real criminals, and they are giving the racers a bad name. Street Takeovers are destroying parking lots/intersections, and Street Racers are getting blamed for it. We should be trying to legalize Street Racing in a safe way. Build some new roads and freeways, close them off to the public and let the Speed Demons race their Tuner cars in peace, without the police giving them any trouble. People need to do some homework and realize that Street Racing has been around since the 1950's. They could build some new racetracks across the country with four lanes and an oval track for racing, that would take care of the Street Racing and Street Takeover problem. However, the government doesn't seem to care or want to help the Street Racing community. You should do a video on NOS Tanks and NOS Button Steering Wheels, who created them and how they became associated with Street Racing.

The street racers in Portland literally fought back against officialls and the city police, holding numerous bridges and freeways hostage numerus times... The city finally caved, and the scene there(Portland, OR/Vancouver, WA)is so crazy and widespread that there are dozens of sites all over there where the cops don't pull anyone from racing(sometimes they bring toys too), they literally hang out watching on the edges, and only step in of a serious crime or accident occurs... It's a crazy feeling to blast by, multiple times, a little pack of cops standing and sitting in thier cruisers and suvs just chilling and chatting... Not lifting a finger... Well on, sometimes they hit the lights to watch the kids scatter, but actually do nothing but laugh...😳
