CGRundertow - METROID II: THE RETURN OF SAMUS for Game Boy Video Game Review

- Classic Game Room presents a CGRundertow review of Metroid II: Return of Samus from Nintendo for the Game Boy. Metroid II isn't your stereotypical handheld spin-off. In fact, the story arc of the Metroid series - including the real sequels for consoles - is built upon foundations laid in this portable, puny, puke-green game. Like the NES original, Metroid II is in a genre all its own. It's not a platform game and it's not an action game, although it does include the primary components of both. First and foremost in any Metroid title is the importance of exploration, an emphasis that's as clear in this game as even Super Metroid or Metroid Prime. This video review features video gameplay footage of Metroid II: Return of Samus for the Game Boy and audio commentary from Classic Game Room's Derek.

This game is freaking awesome! This is definitely one of the best old Metroid games....if you haven't played it, you should!
Finally some metroid 2 fans! :-)
I actually prefer 2 over the first since 2 had a Save system and was much more atmospheric.
Nintendo consoles didn't seem to have the ability create save files on the cartridge. Everything was read only. With Nintendo 64, you would also need a memory card attachment. It's strange considering a handheld console game had the ability to create save files on the cartridge.
I remember the first metroid I ever "played" (it was at a store) was METROID ZERO MISSION for the gameboy. and that game was hard.
Overwhelming sense of DREAD, you say?!
I played this for five minutes on a emulator. I'm not a Metroid fan, but I loved this so much more than the original. It was great!
Sending gameboy week off like a boss. Nice job derek.
My first Metroid game. I was so proud when I was finally able to beat it. ^^
@Luigi84289 I was counting the 8 at the end. There are 39 when you start the game, but once you enter the final levels and discover the Queen laid eggs, the counter goes back up from 1 to 9, and that's not counting the Baby. So 48 in total.
"...Unlike Metroid Prime Hunters it's cannon." Metroid Prime Hunters is cannon. It's place between Metroid Prime 1 and 2 Echoes. :)
Besides sylux, I wish it wasn't canon. Feels like a bionicles game lmao. Good multiplayer tho
Iam thinking about getting it , do u think i should get it?
"The graphics arent great, even for the platform". Sir, respectfully: WHAT??!
Good review Derek
Derek introduced me to Voivod. and this is my favorite original Gameboy game. all awesome!
I love this game...been playing it a lot lately. :)
@JamesEllisTV Of what exactly do I have to get "jelly" of?
one of the first set of games i owned, i love it! ^^
I really wanted a remake of this to come to the DS during its heyday. As incredible as the original Metroid 2 Return of Samus is, it hasn't exactly aged well for this generation.
I can't wait for the PC remake to be finished. The demo is awesome.
NOSTALGIA!! i loved that game, but i just wished it had a map, because navigation can get VERY confusing especially when you beat it in a weekend binge, you forget what you did 2 hours ago, and you ascend into earlier areas and say "WHERE THE F*** AM I??"
I wonder why the guys from CGR don't record the GameBoy games in color, I know I had the GameBoy player and even on the GameBoy Color/Advance when I inserted my GameBoy games, they had colors, I could choose at the beginning of the game which colors should I use by Pressing Right/Left on the D Pad but I surely remember Samus' Varia suit as being Red and Yellow in Metroid II !
Oh I LOVED playing this game at my friend's house... Even if I never played any of the rest of the series for years.
Review is nice but you didn't show any Metroids and barely explored the game in this video.
need this on the eshop 3DS asap!
Nearly 40 Metroids? There's more than that, but not a surprising statement from someone going in thr wrong direction for most of the video. Still, pretty good review, this game is an all time favorite.
why is it in black and white on the gameboy player, mine is in color on the gameboy player
By changing the color palette, it's possible maybe to use original look and design.
@rogums Maybe I inferred wrong... but @ 2:02 it says 'picks up in the immediate aftermath of the metroid prime trilogy' that is what it means to me... as a JOKE. See, it's funny, huh? :)

I own all the Metroid games in the series... best series ever!
first metroid game for me~
this game, i still have the original japanese manual, which i think is worth a lot of money. when i was a kid i couldn't understand it, i reached the final queen metroid and couldn't kill her. i felt so frustrated that i traded tihs game for... mortal kombat 2 -.-
And it scared me to the bones! ... i think im gonna download it for the virtual 3ds console rite now
Ironically, Derek's playing it on a TV as shown by the GB Player frame. *smirk*
metroid was so hard when i was a kid now you can pass the game in 7 or 5 hour's
@hasegawamiki yah on the 3DS with 2d 3d graphics.
I totally agree. This game needs more respect!
i have this game on the 3DS ^.^
God I want this game on the eshop.
Derek, don't listen to the haters...I think you're awesome.
In fact, I agree with what you said in "that review"...and in this one too =)
yes there is.
@GamingWombat that has nothing to do with what he was saying, he means the feel of suepr mario land is different, obviously the sprite is different one's nes and the other's gb
all black & white gameboy gams are in colour on the SP.
Amazing game
99 VIDAS UP!
i would say the upcoming 3ds titles are a big to do
@Kramer7969 I just dont think it implies that at all, can you find me the quote. I might be wrong I guess.
This is the ONLY gameboy game that I still own.
1:22 Whoa, let me stop you there. Whether you like Prime Hunters or not, it's canon. It isn't some fan made garbage.
It may be a filler plot line, but it's canon. It takes place between Prime 1 and Prime 2. Officially licensed by Nintendo and released for an official Nintendo licensed gaming device. It's canon.
@GamingWombat
but at least samus looks like samus and the game definitely has the metroid feel
How do you get it to be black and white on the game boy player?
yea, but u can only turn it into a shade of lime green. That is, for the 3ds eshop version, for all I know
It's better in gray color scale than it is in Green. I guess back in the 80s, Green would have been more appealing than the grey, but not the case these days. Either way, it's great to have the option to toggle between the two
dat intro music, too bad the first great metroid was prime on the GC
The first 3 games are classics for a reason, personally I could do without the Prime series. Not calling Super Metroid a great Metroid shoud be a crime. Then there's the GBA remake of the original game, Metroid Zero Mission, it too is a great Metroid game, and IMO a whole lot better than Metroid Prime.
The original Metroid games are still fondly remembered, while the Prime series, hardly anyone speaks of them these days.
@@Bloodreign1 metroid prime is the greatest metroid game by far...it seems the critics agree with me. oops.
First great? Ohohoho....
@@khav11 the majority of people agree that Super Metroid is better. I love prime but 20 years later Super Metroid has aged much better
@@olsonbryce777 bullsh1t, super metroid looks ancient, prime still has good graphics, nintendo has went to making kids games since the WII tho. so screw them in spade.
Am i the only one that had a slight laugh every time he mentioned the word "Dread"
Thumbs up if you did the same
I use that version.
i got it for free on Friday or so
0:25 not wrong
@GamingWombat (sarcastic whine) Oh, but that's so you can see things better on the smaller screen!
what a sweet review, cheers
This game is in the aftermath of the Metroid Prime series? That's really forward thinking of them to make a game that the story was after a game they wouldn't make for another 11 years. Did George Lucas have anything to do with these games?
that sounds a lot like Luigi's Mansion, because you have to destroy a certain number of some creature in order to progress.
@rogums You don't even get it. This review seems to imply that they made the game knowing it was before the aftermath of the game from 11 years later. Sheesh. I'm not saying that a prequel is anything odd and you may or may not understand, but if you don't why do you have to flame me?
That trademark Metroid Dread
@BrooklynBros Yeah, but he seems to be praising this game because it's different, when he got all upset over Super Mario Land because it was different, even if it wasn't. Besides, everyone will be over it in a few videos.
Amazing Review
Stop saying Metroid dread before I start crying.
So did i :D... Well...I AM getting it when my 3ds charges...
already is
This is the the only metroid I havent played. I wanna get it though
You can ply it in your browser for free, should work on Xbox One too
it looks better on the super gameboy. i also i can beat this game without dying once
this is the best game to gb
@WebVMan No way, Super Metroid and Prime is the best.
...and then Nintendo sues the creator into oblivion for copyright infringement.
@GamingWombat But it still looks and plays like a metroid game.
played this way too much as a kid
@Kramer7969 Its funny cause Star wars had prequels and so does this. hahaha damn, heres one for you, you know how mario has a sequel and so does kill bill? Did tarantino have something to do with those games. hahahah, im so funny man.
Nah, they'll hand out a cease and desist order in order to protect their Trademarks. Otherwise their trademarks are void.
How did I miss this review 2 months ago?
So?
@JamesEllisTV Last to get laid boi.
And sadly that's very likely to happen.
Is your Wii broken, Derek?
I dunno, I would imagine that most Nintendo fanboys probably jumped on the wagon sometime during the third to fifth console generations before the Sony dominated fifth and sixth generations. If that's the case then they would be in their teens at the absolute minimum.
@GamingWombat and? It feels the same, plays the same and moved forward.
This review predicted Metroid Dread
thiis vid is so awesome in 1080p XD
@rogums My comment was a joke in the sense that George Lucas claimed that the 'prequel' were written out from the beginning. This review claims that this story was after the games that came after it. Maybe when you get a brain you'll understand the joke.
Sorry, but you didn't show us any Metroid battles.
The hard part is fighting the Omega Metroids in a crap caverns with fill sand top sides and bottom with barely room to move around while they shoot fireballs and ramming into you sometime you find a caverns full of spikes
I'm sorry but, how did you come to the conclusion that I hate on practically everything? Do you know me? Because I have no idea who you are.
Also...notice the word "agree" in my comment. English is not my first language, but I'm pretty sure that "agreeing" is not hating...actually, I think it could be considered as the exact opposite.
I'm completely with you there, but I understand why they act like that. Most nintendo fanboys/girls are children. Did you really expect them to not act like it?
one of derek's best reviews, and one wich i agree with him %100.metroid 2 retrurn of samus is better then the first metroid and the remake zero mission imo.
@JamesEllisTV U mad?
That could be somewhat likely, but remember how may new ones there are. With the gimmicky motion controls, Wii has around 30 million more consoles on the market than xbox OR ps3. Don't underestimate all the NEW ignorant children around, ha.
99vidas
I was considering downloading this with some of my Club Nintendo Coins, and although it looks great, I've never been too into Metroid games. So I think I'll pass on this one.
Yes, if you haven't played any other Metroid game in this series, then skip it.
Else, I recommend first playing Metroid Zero Mission. Then begin playing in this order Metroid II Return of Samus, Super Metroid (Metroid III), and then Metroid Fusion (Metroid IV) ... If you want, you can subsitutre Zero Mission with the original, however, Zero Mission has a more complete ending and will feel nicer if NES isn't your thing.
All you kids who bought it on 3DS. i just got it for free on clubnintendo :D FREE AND PORTABLE
LOL, I got it for free on Android, Xbox One, PC, DSi, and 3DS..
Emulators!!
That's a port, not a remake. :P
He sucks in metroid 2
6th
i was born in 1990, was i born when this game came out anyone?
What is it with your yell-talk voice? Are you selling this for Nintendo? It's hard to tell what you really think of this vidgame.
The Super Game Boy 2 is the ONLY way to play this classic!
