20 years ago getting Sri Lankan ports were difficult for India. At that time, Sethu Samudram Canal is more important to India to strengthen South Indian Ports in states like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. But, Cost of constructing Sethu Samudram Canal for Bigger ship is very high. Tamil nadu chief minister also well awarethat sethu Samudram Canal is not feasible, But both Tamil Nadu and North Indian political parties want to use this situation for gaining more votes during election.
But now situation changed major Indian companies can get and control Sri Lankan ports for far more cheaper cost. Now, India government lost its interest in Sethu Samudram Canal. Its nothing political or religious, its purely business.

I applaud the Indian Prime Minister for respecting his mother tongue, whereas our president still uses a foreign language to communicate Internationally and most of the time at home too. President Wickramasinghe is playing it smart with the Chinese and the Indians. China is an excellent ally to have on one's side. The USA has learned it hard, which is a bit too late for its crumbling world status. Using the rupee for bilateral trade may pave the way for us to join BRICS+ in the future. Good job, Mr. President. But if you fall under its influence (it is a drug after all), you can forget any hope for peace. India only wants one thing from Sri Lanka: that Sri Lanka does not side with enemies of India. For better relationship between India and Sri Lanka , India should not intervene to the 13th amendment of Sri Lanka's constitution. 13th amendment is the major issue that tarnish relations between SL and India. As long as there is no talks about this clause of the constitution India and SL can go as partners. because majority of the Sri Lanka do not agree with the 13th amendment

Better strategy is to build a bridge. Open a oversease naval and command base in long run.. Open a university to improve educational and cultural ties. Allow free trade of agricultural goods over a period of time and make sure the payment happens in rupees. Scolarship for best academic students. We need a long standing strategic relation rather than just hiting short term goals..

Well, as a Sri Lankan, the part about India having a people to people link with Sri Lanka possibly resonates with a tiny minority. India overtly and covertly supported the LTTE and it's brutal war against the state of SL. Until of course the LTTE turned around and bit off the hand that fed it when they killed Rajiv Gandhi. This support to the the LTTE is something most Sri Lankans have not forgiven nor forgotten for obvious reasons. Having said that, India helped immensely when it came to finishing off the LTTE. And in current times, India has also helped SL as it reels from economics collapse. As India and China are at loggerheads and both are global powers with strong interests in the region, SL shouldn't make the mistake of choosing one over the other. ALthough in a different scale, Ukraine is a running example of choosing one over the other and paying a massive price for it. Sri Lanka, should stay neutral and work with regional players to the betterment of it's people. Right now, China has been demonized and most if not all corruption related issues are the fault of the political class and linked officials. If not China, who would have invested so much for Port City in Colombo? Nobody! And we Sri Lankans should be grateful to both CHina and India for their support. Getting the our house in order, rooting out corruption and rule of law is something we must sort out.

India has its own reasons to help Sri Lanka & that is mutual growth in the neighborhood. As long as India's neighbourhood remains peaceful it helps both Sri Lanka as well as India in long term growth.
Sri Lanka can't pretend to be neutral & welcome spy ships on its territory while endangering Indian security interests, that's how geopolitics works. If Sri Lanka wants to show it's neutrality, then it should act against far away countries from using its territory against Sri Lanka's biggest immediate neighbour. As I said, neutrality is an inherent capability, not an external gift by someone else.

There are direct flights from Chennai to Jaffna now. Tamil Nadu politicians are messing with SL politics. It is one thing to provide morale support to SL Tamils but quite another matter to disrupt India-SL relations.

India-Sri Lanka relationship hit rock bottom during the so called Tamil "ethnic" conflict but was really LTTE created violent conflict. To appease Tamil Nadu politicians, India under Indira Gandhi turned a blind eye to Sri Lanka's appeal to dismantle terrorist training camps in Tamil Nadu & elsewhere in India and denied their existence even when it was blatantly evident. Later under Rajiv Gandhi, India's violation of Sri Lanka's airspace to drop a few lunch packets in the largely Tamil populated Northern SL in name of humanitarian aid and induction of the much despised IPKF was the last straw Sri Lankans could take. This was epitomised by a naval rating trying to strike a blow on Rajiv Gandhi during a guard of honour. Such was the mood in SL. India lost the trust & affection of most Sri Lankans. To add to this, when Mahinda Rajapakse invited India first to develop the Hambantota sea port, India refused at Tamil Nadu's behest. Then SL turned to the opportunistic Chinese and economic partnership between SL and China grew stronger. SL cannot be blamed. Of course during the recent economic crisis in SL, India assisted big time to aid the recovery by initially providing bilateral loans and materials. They also backed SL in obtaining IMF loans. This is the way forward for India and Tamil Nadu should realise that they do no favour to the Sri Lankan Tamils by using the SL Tamil issue for playing their internal politics.

The problem in SL is the Thereawada Buddhists are dead against Tamil Hindus. And started revoking citizenship of Tamils and other natives of SL right from 1948 itself. And sinhala Buddhists started butchering Tamils from 1960's, slayed Tamils with Axes very rampantly during vendetta factions onslaught in Northern SL from 1980's which gave rise to birth of Tiger in 80' decade from Jaffna and the civil started which resulted in genocide of ethnic Tamils.

There are many Christians as well among both Sinhalese & Tamils. Buddhists worship many Hindu gods. The conflicts date back to dynastical Tamil & Sinhala origins in ancient times when Tamil dynasties such as Cholas, Pandyas invaded SL in the North. They were fighting against Sinhala dynasties and among themselves. After Independence, the situation was instigated with the call for Tamil cessesion by a Tamil politician, SJV Chelvanayakam. It snowballed. Citizenships of SL Tamils were never deprived nor revoked. What was in dispute was the citizenship of those Tamils brought over by the British during colonial times as indentured labour (slaves) to work in the upcountry tea plantations. These were called Indian Tamils & were not natives. After much deliberation there was an agreement reached between the Prime Minsters of SL & India in 1964, called the Sirima-Shastri Pact under which about half were given SL citizenship & the balance repatriated to India. There were intermittent clashes between Sinhalese & SL Tamils during which the Tamils suffered much more due to smaller population. It was in July 1983 that the worst attack on Tamils by politically backed Sinhala goons happened. No one is denying the plight of the SL Tamils & their rights and the need to investigate and bring to book those responsible for innocent Tamils being persecuted, tortured & killed by the armed forces during the final days of the war. This does not justify the hero worshipping of & glorifying the internationally condemned terrorist group, the LTTE & its late leader Prabhakaran who was a megalomaniac who killed even Tamil political leaders and an Indian PM. It would be like some Muslims glorifying Osama Bin Laden & Al-Queda for taking revenge on the Americans for bombing innocent Muslims in Middle East. Terrorism in Kashmir is another example.
