True Story: My aunt grew up two houses down from Brad Dourif. She's the definition of a Holy Roller and is part of 3 church prayer groups. Even though her dementia is getting bad, to this day she hasn't let it slip to any of them she gets a Christmas card every year from the guy who's voiced the most famous demonic doll in horror movie history for 35 years😂😂😂. He even signs "Your friend til the end... Hidey-ho"

Truly. 80s slashers and 90s B-List action movies are my favorites.
Richard Donner had such range as a director. The Goonies, Superman, The Omen, The Lethal Weapon movies.
What a legacy he left behind
Scrooged and 16 Blocks are great as well.
Id say his good points in movies made up for some of his bad points, most certainly. : )
And to think he made a show for a kids show called Danger Island
Conspiracy theories is a underrated donner movie.
Like a handful of his own films he makes a cameo appearance. In this one he is one of the authorities on the 4-wheeler that discovers the kids on the beach at end, he says “You better call Harvey,” which I believe is a reference to producer Harvey Bernhard who collaborated with Donner throughout the 70s-80s.
So happy to see Ke Huy Quan back in the spotlight. He was my favourite Goonie. This movie is my childhood.
For me that was The Mouth. Feldman is an 80s legend.

This movie got my dad a million dirty looks when we saw it. He was 90% asleep (Just worked a 16 hour shift), and when Chunk told Sloth that he was gonna live at his house, my dad said loud as hell *"I bet his dad'll be f***ing thrilled. What do you even feed that thing???"* He didn't realize he said it out loud til my big brother and I busted out laughing along with most of the dads in there. Every mom turned and gave him the look of death, and my poor mom covered her face til everyone else left.

Considering what his family was feeding him, I don’t think Sloth cares much about what you feed him, just that you do feed him. The parents might be happy that they at least don’t have a picky eater to deal with. Also if there’s any furniture or anything like that which needs moving (maybe a bigger fridge installed), out comes the Superman shirt. 😄

the actor who played Chunk was voted homecoming king by promising to do the truffle shuffle at football games. He is now a Hollywood contract lawyer and was at the awards with Ke Huey Quan because they are still friends.
Anne Ramsey the evil mom was a legendary character actress and she got more acting roles after the throat cancer.
the mom of the good brothers was also the mom in Monster Squad. If you have not seen Monster Squad, it is basically the same type of kids' adventure except they are fighting Dracula, Frankenstein, wolfman, mummy, and gill-man.
Jeff Cohen ('Chunk') wasn't at the Academy Awards show with Ke Huy Quan just because they're still friends: Jeff is Ke's lawyer!

The mom from goonies and monster squad was in most of the popular 80s movies and most of Richard donners movies.. pretty impressive career actually.
“Chunk” also lost a ton of weight and is pretty thin now, but you can still see the old “Chunk” in his eyes.
The scene where Corey Feldman translates to the maid has killed me for almost 40 years 😂
Always brings a tear to my eye when Sloth says, “Sloth love Chunk.” and holds the rock up for them. 😢

The part of Sloth was played by the late great John Matuszak. He was a 6'8" defensive end who'd played for the Raiders and won two Super Bowls with them. Matuszak's personality landed him on commercials, guest appearances on talk shows and TV shows before landing the role of Sloth on The Goonies.
He was very funny playing the arch villain in “Caveman” with Ringo Starr.
There's a photo of him naked on a bear skin rug, tastefully done and hysterical.
John Matuszak sadly died three years after the Goonies from an accidental drug overdose. He was just 38 yo. 😓😔😞
he was also in an episode of MASH.
Corey Feldman didn't want to do this movie because Friday the 13th Part 5 was filming at the same time and it was going to be about the character he played in part 4. His parents made him do this movie instead, and they were obviously 100% right.
Part 5 is one of the worst entries in the Friday the 13th series, but it would have been a very different film if Corey had starred in it. They rewrote it when he dropped out. He does still have a small cameo in that movie.
Loved the reaction. The thing about The Goonies is that for those of us lucky enough, like me, to have watched this as a kid, in the 80's, is that it seemed completely possible to have this kind of adventure. Nothing seemed too fantastic or impossible through our eyes. As adults, yes you see the ridiculous, but this wasn't The NeverEnding Story or Time Bandits or The Explorers. This seemed real, IMO anyways.
It was clever writing I think not to have included anything which was too 'fantastic', made it so much more plausible for a child watching, easier to imagine, yes, maybe I could have such an adventure.
Explorers FTW.
I think a lot of that is because this came from the age of Practical Effects. It just makes the movie seem more real and grounded.
Totally real, I've had an adventure here and there exactly on the same equivalent of Goonies by intensity, just not on a grand scale like a big sailing ship and crooked crooks
Corey Feldman was in a bunch of classic movies that my dad showed me... This, "Stand By Me," "The Lost Boys," etc. But my favorite movie he was in, and my favorite character he played, was in "The Burbs" with Tom Hanks. I'd love to see a reaction to that movie.

There are several interview clips on YT about "The Burbs" with its director btw.
Also, during the scene where they were messing with the pipes and there's a shot where the camera zooms in on Corey Feldman's face as he yells "Reverse pressure!" That shot took so many takes since Feldman didn't have the energy to shout out the line. That was until he found out that Michael Jackson (Whom Feldman was a big fan of at the time) was coming and visiting the set. That shot of Corey screaming "Reverse pressure" was really him getting excited about MJ visiting the Goonies set.
The burbs was such an underrated movie. And he did it with the other Cory Feldman

I miss those days. If the story was done now, the kids would just be sitting around playing on their phones and would never have had the adventure.
This and The Neverending Story are THE 2 movies every 80's kid has seen at least a few times, possibly hundreds😀. Andy was my "older woman" crush as a kid. Stand By Me and The Lost Boys are the R-rated other 2 staples.

The summer of 1985 was magic. I was 11 and we didnt know what we were about to watch. I spent the summer with my sister & cousins looking for adventure, scaling ravines, crossing rivers, riding our bikes further than ever before. We were Goonies too and our best treasure was our friendship. 💙☠
I love that so many of the Goonies actors were publicly celebrating Ke Huy Quan's Oscar win. This movie is almost 40 years old and many of the cast still seem to be friends. In an age when it feels like friends can be hard to make and keep I found it touching. Also...I feel like the parents might all have been charged with child neglect if this were set today. These kids, unsupervised, almost died multiple times in caves underground. PS: The pirate ship set (the Inferno) was real. It was 105 feet long and took more than two months to build. After filming they couldn't find anyone to take it (for free) so they had to break it down.

Growing up with parents who worked 12 hours. A day and being the only kid on my block and having to be home sick a lot: movies were my escape. It’s crazy to me how many movies you guys and others have never seen. But it brings me joy to see reactions. Love you guys.
I was born in 1987. Before i was 18 there was not a single imdb top 500 movie i have missed. I have been watching European less known movies as well.
If you need some great unknown UK movies to watch I'd recommend TWIN TOWN from wales it stars rhys ifans and his brother Llyr ifans in the main roles and dougray Scott this is the movie Tom cruise saw Scott in and cast him in mission impossible 2 it's a cult classic in the UK and man about dog a irish movie about hare coursing which is another great movie that nobody knows about

Bale thought it was suppose to be a fake slap , but she really slapped him to get a perfect shot . It must have taken a few good slaps to get the reaction that Spielberg wanted .

A young Martha Plimpton (daughter of Keith Carradine) is in the film too. These days she is a stage actor. She has described her job as, "wearing dead people's hair and yelling at strangers."

When the director made them go down that water slide at the end , he didn't tell the kids what would be at the end . He wanted to get their real reaction when they saw the ship for the first time .

I remember my late dad taking my brother and I to watch this when it came out in 85. As a GenXer born in 1974, I was lucky enough to grow up in the 1980s ❤
In a lot of ways, this movie sums up what it was like being an 80s kid. Not the treasure (unfortunately!), but the being far from the folks, no adults, time outside with your friends, everything feeling like an adventure... perfect!
@@benrositas8068 I look back now and realize how I was at the oldest 10 and miles from home "snake hunting" (just catching) in the Arizona desert. I get anxiety now during my daughter's (13) 3 minute bike ride to my brother's house to see her cousins. Definitely a different time than now sadly.
Rewatching this movie on VHS over and over was a big part of my childhood. 🥰
Timeless...absolutely timeless...one of the true greats, this movie. Fantastic cast, fantastic script, it doesn't 'talk down' to the audience...and it truly never gets old.
Also, I think there were only two of the main cast who didn't go on to have extensive careers in movies - Kerri Green/Andy, and Jeff Cohen/Chunk. That being said, though, Jeff Cohen and Ke Huy Quan have stayed close ever since this movie, to the point that Jeff is now Ke's entertainment lawyer. Hence the "Goonies never say die" shout out at the Oscars.
This is a fast and VERY LOUD film, but it was an integral part of my 80's childhood. I just love this one.
Loud chaos is something I remember being very accurate to hanging out with a group of friends as a kid.
One of the coolest aspects of this movie is the kids reaction to the boat is genuine. When they filmed the scene it was the first time any of them had seen it.
With the exception of Cory Feldman. He later admitted he accidentally caught a glimpse of the pirate ship set beforehand, so he knew what to expect.

Five times for me. I dug a hole in my parents backyard looking for treasure. They were furious.
@@theaterbear How deep did you get? :D Though it was a few years before this film, around 1976 (aged 6) I tried digging a tunnel from my back garden to my friend's house who was two doors up (rural village, large gardens). My digging was though kinda ignored by my parents (I guess they didn't think I was serious) until I started talking about needing roof supports because now I was going sideways. :D That's when they put a halt to proceedings, and then it rained anyway, completely filling the hole (which kinda creeped me out for some reason, I didn't like deep water). My friend made similar progress I think, likewise stopped by his parents eventually, and the weather.
Oh well, no matter. Another time, the village kids tried building a mini hydro dam thing across the main stream/river on the other side of the nearby field, backed up the river so much it flooded several back gardens. :D It started a craze of dam building, we got pretty good at it, and every time the dam broke it washed away lots of sediment, revealing loads more fossils along the stream banks. Some of the fossils were so good, someone came to visit from the British Musem in London to have a look (my brother, 3 years older than me, was mad about fossils at the time).
The two of you should seriously start off each video from now on with…..”Heyyyy Youuuuu Guyyyyys!!” 😂😂

Goonies never say die!!
I grew up on this movie. My kids grew up with this movie. I can honestly say I’ve seen it over a hundred times. I have an opinion or little viewpoint on nearly every action and line that occurs, much to the annoyance of those watching with me. And yet I have never had the thought about Rosalita leaving with the jewels. I legit lol’d at the plausibility and humor of the idea of her just disappearing with the loot. So kudos for adding another little perspective to an old favorite!
Highly recommend the novelisation of the film, by chance I'm reading it atm. Told from Mikey's point of view, it has some nice backstory and some extra scenes not present in the film (or maybe they were shot but cut from the final edit, eg. a confrontation between the gang and Troy in a diner, Brand helping out just in time).
The pirate ship reveal at the end chokes me up every time.

The Definition of Timeless: no matter how old We get, this Childhood Classic will still never...ever get old!
Also, here's a Fun Fact: Josh Brolin's character in "Deadpool 2" is mockingly referred to as both Thanos and One-Eyed Willy, the latter of which is from this movie.

If you guys liked this I'd suggest The Monster Squad and if you liked Gremlins I'd suggest Critters. Also, technically the kid Indiana Jones would be Young Indiana Jones show. Other suggestions in the same vein would be The Lost Boys, The Explorers, Adventures in Babysitting, Iron Eagle, Neverending Story and Flight of the Navigator. Red Dawn is kinda in that same vein lol.
The Librarian movie and series and the first two mummy movies are in the same vein as Indiana Jones. You might also want to give Deep Rising, Dick Tracy, Expendables, Remo Williams (has Earl from Tremors), Shoot Em Up. Short Circuit, The Wraith with Charlie Sheen, Hook with Robin Williams, Labyrinth, Legend with Tom Cruise, CHUD, Night of the Creeps (same director as Monster Squad), The Blob (original or remake) a look.
Love me some Deep Rising. My friends and I met Stephen Sommers at a screening for The Mummy. He was outside the theater when we came out and he talked to us for like 15 minutes before he got dragged away. Really cool guy.
The Monster Squad is excellent. Wish more reactors would check that out.

Hi Daniel & Samantha!🙂The Cyndi Lauper video with WWF members for this film got a lot of airplay on MTV in the 80's. Children of the 80's will most likely remember Data in his film debut as Short Round in "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" released a year before this film. The actor has become more popular recently with "Everything Everywhere.....". Anne Ramsey (Head of the gang) would become more popular a few years later with the comedy film "Throw Momma From the Train". TRIVIA: When the kids see the pirate ship their reaction is genuine. That was the first time they saw the ship. Great reactions to this fun Donner film written by Spielberg, Kids!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Rosalita gave over the jewels because she was afraid. Mouth told her if she didn’t do a good job they’d lock her in the closet with the cockroaches. We can only imagine what Mikey’s parents would do to her if she stole their jewels. 😂
You guys have to watch Weird Science. One of the funniest best movies of the 80’s. Both of you will love it, guaranteed.

The Goonies is my childhood. "Down here, it's OUR time." The magic of what we grew up with, never let that go. We 80s kids ARE a tough group.

This was a big part of my childhood and is still a movie I adore. It's such a great adventure, with an amazing cast, many of whom are now incredible talents.
It's really a shame Jeff Cohen didn't do more acting because he's so funny! "No! I wanna play the violin!"
Jeff actually seems to have been pretty successful in the business world if you look it up. I always loved that kid!
Jeff took another path to success. He dropped the C from Chunk, and grew up to be a svelte, handsome, successful entertainment lawyer.

1) The hat Jake wears at the beginning was apparently one of the ones from Temple of Doom. Spielberg said he took it and brought it over to this set, and thus it ended up on Robert Davi's head!
2) Joe Pantoliano went on to be in Memento, and Cypher in The Matrix.
3) I went to Berkeley for university, just 1 year behind Jeff Cohen, who played Chunk! (And I never found out until after he'd graduated 'cause not a lotta internet back then..) But he was elected our student body president, and apparently he'd do the Truffle Shuffle during our football games which got all the students cheering like MAD.
Jeff is an entertainment lawyer now and represents Ke! It's great they they are still friends.
Yay so glad you guys made it to this one. I saw this when I was 10 and was pretty obsessed. I can’t help reciting Mikey’s big speech when it gets to that part. Love the adventure and the group of kids ranging in age and backgrounds working together to make it to the end. A lotta heart.
Leave it to Sean Astin to make the big inspirational speech that keeps the quest going...he did it in Two Towers, too.
This was part of my childhood ....which I shared with my now teenage daughter. To quote her, "Dad...that was the greatest movie I've ever seen!"
Favorite part was Chunk yelling when he was placed with the dead body for the SECOND time! I must have rewound that scene hundreds of times as a kid laughing my head off until my stomach hurt.
Me and a high school friend one night kept rewinding the part where Data's pincers bite Joey's groin over and over and laughing like lunatics...as Homer Simpson once said, "It's funny 'cause it's not me."

One of my favorite movies growing up!
Sad part is that pirate ship was really built , it was actual working ship and after the movie was done filming they try to give it to any amusement park at the time. But there was no takers for the ship. So they had to destroy it. Just think if that ship was around now , how many people would pay to walk on it , take pictures, people were just not forward thinkers. Missed opportunity at the highest. I love this movie growing up. It spoke to us as children, going on adventures with our friends in the neighborhood.

So some trivia. The parents at the end were their real life parents (except Mikey a Brand) They were not shown the pirate ship so their reactions were real. The actress who played Steph was River Phoneix real life girlfriend, the actors who played the Fratelli brothers hated each other in real life, Sloth was played by an American football player who sadly died of a heart attack a year later. If you want a similar movie with modern twist then check out Without a paddle. It's awesome.

The kids’ reaction to seeing the pirate ship was 100% genuine as that moment was the first time they actually saw it. The Director planned it that way.

Actually Feldman said a couple of them snuck in and saw them building it. But yeah their first reaction had way too much h cussing so they did a second take.

There was a scene with an octopus where Mouth got it to go away by shoving his Walkman in its mouth (if I remember right). I think it's on the "edited for television" version, but I've only seen it maybe once or twice years ago. Anyway, that's why they mention an octopus later on the beach.
Very interesting! I'm reading the novelisation atm which has that scene has a teaser on the intro page, but I've not seen a film version which includes it.

I saw this film in the theater in my early teens and loved it. When I saw you were reacting to it, I had to watch immediately. I love your reactions and knew you two would have fun watching this one!
The large rock in the ocean that Sean Astin's character views through the coin is off the coast of Canon Beach, Oregon. The houses in a town more to the north called Astoria. As a kid growing up in the 80s in the Pacific Northwest, it was cool to have this movie and Stand By Me filmed nearby and with actors of a similar age. The movies inspired a lot of kids living in my area to go outside and go on "adventures" further and further from home, and be more independent.
This was definitely at the top of my list as a kid. I'm from WV and we used to love going exploring in the woods playing Indiana Jones and Goonies.

This has become such an iconic and beloved 80s movie,it's hard to not like. Also I like the bit with the Superman shirt, clearly a nod to Richard Donner who directed Superman.
A true classic :) It came out 2 years before I was born, but it was a staple of my childhood :) And I never noticed that James Brolin played the older brother! I look forward to you two watching through the Indiana Jones series, another staple of my childhood :)

Sloth was played by former Oakland Raiders football defensive end John Matuszak. He was a crazy player with an over-the-top personality, at 6' 8". Just a fun movie to watch. The cast really worked well together. Thanks for reacting!

I was born in '74. I think being a kid in the 80s was exceptional bc of the movie magic all created without CGI
plus children were becoming a big demographic group for the industry to point its canons at..
We just got showered with the most awesome movies for an entire decade.
The Goonies definitely have this typical 80s Spielbergian feel to it.
One just can't deny Spielberg simply having ruled fantasy of 80s kids.
I saw this movie at the drive-in. My parents would let my brother and I lay on a blanket up on the roof of our car. Those were the days
It would be nice if you watched Spielberg's movie debut "Duel". It's amazing how he made such simple concept into such a thrilling movie.
I really enjoyed Duel, but it's best to go into that one with low expectations. It is a made-for-tv film, not a proper theatrical movie with a large budget.
@@Rocket1377 Doesn't matter, it's vastly superior to half of his big screen films. The fact it was made for TV doesn't mean anything and the budget allows the film to be exactly what it needs to be. Not to mention Spielberg applied some of the same shots and script points to Jaws.

Our kids used to love this movie so much that they often rented it at Blockbusters. I have never seen any part of it until now. I can see why they were so enthralled by it. I do think once is enough for me.

more than any other movie this reminds me of growing up as a kid in the 80s. This was in HBO and everybody taped it. we all had our copies of The Goonies. Gen X grew up on this movie.
One of my favorite childhood movies.
This film is major part of my childhood, the story was created by Steven Spielberg. My siblings grew up watching this film and when I got older they introduced it to me and I loved it immediately. You guys rock. Also, another recommendation is The Lost Boys.
Corey Feldman was such a great actor with amazing charisma at such a young age. All the kids in this movie do a great job it really feels like it could be a real friendship group
I still watch this to this day. Reciting nearly every Chunk or Mouth line. Love this movie
I’m so glad that you loved this! It’s so quotable. The 80’s were so much fun. Look up the behind the scenes. That whole ship, the slides, the water was all an actual massive set. It’s crazy. And apparently they had a giant squid set piece that they filmed but that got cut.
I'm so glad I got to grow up with this movie in my back pocket as a kid. Riding our bikes to go on adventures (over to the next neighborhood where they were building a new subdivision so there were dirt piles and foundations to explore) was made to look much more exciting than it really was by pretending we were goonies 😂😂
Hey for another great 80's classic check out "Romancing the Stone" starring Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner & Danny Devito. This movie has Action, Comedy & Romance its a must see (kind of a forgotten gem from that decade).

The Goonies is another brilliantly done movie. They really knew how to make movies memorable back then.

Got into an early screening of Goonies when my father worked at Warner Brothers, thought it was delightful and was surprised it wasn’t a bigger hit. Glad it’s a beloved classic today

A related movie recommendation that stars Anne Ramsey (Mama Fratelli). Its a black comedy called "Throw Momma From The Train" and co-stars Danny Devito and Billy Crystal. Billy plays a college English professor and Danny his dimwitted student who tries to enlist Billy in killing his overbearing Momma. Anne was nominated for an Academy award for the movie.

The director, Richard Donner, set it up so that the first time the kids see the pirate ship after going through the water slide was the real first time they saw the ship…all their reactions are real. I always thought that was pretty cool.
And Brolin yelled Holy Sh*t, so he kinda messed the reveal up. Makes me smile every time now.
I was lucky enough to be able to see the actual version that had the Giant Octopus scene...I wish they would release the version the way it was supposed to be seen Giant Octopus and all

I adore this movie since i was a kid. There is so much positive energy in this movie and at the end message is family is the most important
I missed seeing this is the theater, I think I was twelve when it came out. About a year later, my parents were going out for the evening and they rented this movie from my little brother and I to watch. As soon as it was over, we rewound the tape and watched the entire thing from the beginning. Definitely a classic of my generation.
The kid actors were amazing. Iconic flick, so glad you both loved it. Samantha broke it down as it was for me when I saw it for the first time.

In the pipe-banging scene, Mouth pulls a wrench out of nowhere. And from the opening, his dad is a plumber. So apparently his dad just makes him keep a wrench on his person at all times.
Can't believe I've never wondered where the wrench came from.
He was helping his dad with the plumbing in the opening scene, so he probably just put the wrench in his pocket.
I guess Mr. Devereaux taught his son to always be prepared for plumbing. 🔧
