I used to know a guy who worked at the Kennedy Center during this time. He said Katharine was the only honoree up until that time who insisted on going backstage to thank the crew. They were all dumbfounded and thrilled.

She was such a true friend. When Bogie was dying and Lauren (Betty Bacall) was sad & terrified, Kate would come late at night (With Spence) so they didnt draw attention to themselves, and visit their friends and give support & love.

My favorite Kate line is in Lion in Winter (there are so many brilliant ones). After a magnificent, raging, vulgar row with O’Toole that sends him roaring from the room, she lifts her head from the straw strewn castle floor, pats her hair, and says, “What family doesn’t have it’s up and downs?” 😂

The money doesn’t want to create the same environment anymore. There are standards, or there used to be. High-up interests no longer care to hold those standards tight by investing in them. The entertainment industry has been turned into a flashy circus sideshow, totally devolved, by those with the power to have made and kept it something of great quality instead.

@@PolGara0139 People sometimes tell me that we've always had trashy television and to some extent there is some truth in that. But alongside the trashy tv of years ago (any situation comedy from my childhood) there were programs of superior quality. Besides the "chewing gum for the eyes" we also had programs that held up a higher standard. I saw the movie "Lady Bird" yesterday and as the movie ended (credits rolling) I realized I had been moved by a good story and by the principal characters who demonstrated that human beings can be real and lovely in an imperfect world.

I absolutely love this woman! She is literally my GREATEST hero, she didn’t take any crap from anybody, especially during a time when women were treated subservient to men, she wouldn’t have any of it and told them what they could go do with themselves, do you have any idea how much courage it took to do that in a time when most women Were totally ignored and treated like garbage? The qualities I admire most in anybody is honesty and integrity, those two words sum up her personality perfectly. She didn’t pull any punches (although I’ll bet she swung a few at sexist directors and actors), she was never phony, never afraid to speak her mind, and lived life on her terms, and to hell with the rest of the world! I absolutely admire and love that characteristic, it’s rare to find in a man, much less a woman of that era. Things are different now, at least a little bit, but back when Kate first started out, it was unheard of. They didn’t know what to do with her because they were so intimidated by her commanding presence and incredible talent. Even though she’s not here in the physical world anymore, in my eyes she will never die, because she has left behind a golden legacy that will live forever in the annals of history! My dearest Kate, although I was never honoured to meet you in person, I feel like I’ve known you personally all my life, because I have watched every single thing you have ever done, and will forever remain in bewildered awe of the incredible talent, strength, courage, tenacity, integrity, and unflinching willpower to live your life the way you wanted, never giving in to the pressure of society. If only we could all be like you, the world would be a much better place. Sending you all my love ❤️❤️❤️

When Hollywood and the entertainment world in general had some CLASS! Some true glamour backed by serious character and ability to carry oneself well and be well-spoken. Now it’s been bought out by corporate interest and sheer tacky trash. Performers of real calibre still do exist, but are not given the same spotlight in this field that they once were. Seems logical many will have taken to the stage instead. Sad but true.
Bless you for uploading this treasure trove of golden moments in a place and time where quality mattered more than glitter.

Thank you for posting this. It was so emotional and brought tears to my eyes , but out of all of her master scenes with Tracy why did they chose his legendary heart wrenching final scene in the tribute, a scene from a movie she could never bring herself to watch ever ,stating many times how it was so painful for her to bear, it was heart breaking, watching that pained expression and the tears welling in her eyes with a sorrowful trembling mouth it broke my heart. Such a formidable and incredibly delicate woman, she was so overcome with emotions that she could barely stand. It was obvious after all those years she could never bring herself to move on from his death, it was a living wound deeply set in her heart, and was not to be touched .Maybe they did it thinking she would love it, or maybe they knew how emotional she would get watching it . I love her and respect her more than words can describe, may her soul rest in peace and had the happiness and satisfaction she deserves.

@@lilian9577 Barbara Walters once asked Kate if she was a tree, what kind would she be? And Kate replied "An Oak". Also, Lilian, be sure to spell Katharine with 2 "A's" -not much bothered Kate but she was not happy when it was misspelled...she'd say, "Only E is at the end, two A's and an E at the end."

Katharine Hepburn was way better than the Kardashians. Even in her 80s she had style and wit. I'II bet she still had that wit until her death.

Even though I have been a mad fan of KH since the 80's, and exchanged some letters with her back then [until she wrote that she had no time for this correspondence], this Kennedy Center segment has always made me a little sad. Her only friend present was Lauren Bacall. She played in one film with Angela Lansbury, which no one talks about, and ... Glenn Close ... ? Cynthia McFadden, who would become the executor of her estate, had only just befriended KH at this taping. No family there, No surviving longtime friends. It makes me think of the anecdote where she was quoted as telling someone she'd made no friends in Hollywood, and Spencer Tracy is quoted as interjecting it's because she's a b*tch.

Ironic that Angela read the line about not being able to have it all, i.e. kids. Angela, Glenn and Bacall had them and still had great careers. But it is difficult. On the other hand, it may be that she meant that the man she loved, Tracy, was married and could not divorce so therefore it was her lot to be unmarried and childless.

I don't understand why Hepburn never went to any of her wins. And I also found out that she and Bette Davis were at the same public place onetime. I can't recall a year. But she refused to be in a photo shot with Ms. Davis. Bette Davis always said Ms. Hepburn had such great bone structure. I consider Bette Davis our greatest American actress.
