    Musicfreak,... I prefer the"RAY4". It just sounds stronger than "RAY34". My first bass ever was a 77' Fender jazz. String axe. I'm use to the strong presence, plus I'm from "PHILLY!". RAISED ON FUNK, GOSPEL FUNK, JAZZ FUNK, SLOW FUNK. Everything is "FUNK!". Lol!

      You are beasting on any bass you play. Awesome Brother. I'm from right across the bridge in Camden. Mainly on the gospel scene but appreciate all grooves. I have a Squire Fender jazz 4 string I think it's a 1988, I have in Alvarez 6 string bass and I just Bought an Ibanez GSR205 5 string. I bought these bases in the past because I always wanted to have a bass available whenever I had a gospel church gig and my bass player was without his axe. I am primarily a keyboard Player and just decided To dust off these basses and learn how to play. Now all I need to do is learn from the master , do you ever give online lessons? Or is there anyone You would refer? Those cats at Guitar Center can't play anything like you do lol . At any rate I really enjoy your videos bro and keep doing these demo videos even though you make it hard to choose the right bays because you play so well all of them. Peace brother. 🎵🎹🎵🎹🎶

      Its like every low priced instrument. Some will be real good, some mediocre ones, and some turds.
      You have to put in some time and check some basses out (or have to be lucky for the first shot) to find a "real good one".
      Even the Ray 34 series has better and not so good pieces.
      The high end series of MusicMan StingRay basses has lots of good ones- and some that are stellar.

    I have had my SUB Ray4 for a little over a year. I just love it! It's got so much attitude and punch and growl, it's wonderful. It plays easy too. I switched out the hardware and bridge on mine and now it's even better. I couldn't be happier. I will recommend the Ray4 always.

    These Sub 4 's are really packing some firepower, the more I hear them, the more impressed I am. They strike me as the instrument you can buy on a budget, improve the rough bits over time either by DIY or upgrade (still with budget in mind) and have a very nice and bespoke instrument at the end of the whole exercise. No bad thing in my book.

      Jay,...Sorry about the late, late response. Yes,...once you plug into a mixing board, all bets are off. You can set your tone you want. You can,...all you have to do is, get you one of those "CHEAT" machines. Sabine has this little device that slows down the riff that you want to learn and it keeps it in the key that the original riff is, once you slow it down without losing its pitch. Now, here's the "SECRET" to really doing what you see me doing in this video. First, you have to "DISCIPLINE" yourself. Then,... listen to the riff that you want to learn and record it to the device, play it back over and over and over until you can't take it anymore, (lol!). Now, here's the "KEY" Ready? DO THE RIFF "SLOWLY and CORRECTLY". "SLOWLY AND CORRECTLY" "NOTE FOR NOTE" "EVERY LITTLE DETAIL YOU HEAR IN THAT RIFF!!!!!!!!" You have to "MEMIC" that riff to the "T!!!!" As the riff gets easier for you, then you can speed it up. Speed it up until you get the "ORIGINAL" riff speed under your fingers and from there you can take flight. That it. : D

    I find it interesting that the Sub Ray Four is active and affordable. I'm a finger player and a pick player. I'm currently learning slap on my own. But I don't think I can get that good at slap. So I want an active bass to get a higher low end sound. I currently have a short scale classic vibe Jaguar.

      Just slap all that you know and pull the note to everyday plus finger your bass as well. You will start to combine all into your slap. Playing like this is all you know being played which will become your bass solo. That's what you are watching. Remember to pull your notes all day to develop that style and thumb the note some days plus finger the note. Eventually you will play all 3 in your style in your slap playing.

    FYI I just bought a SLO Classic from Guitar Center. These are made in Indonesia. I think the quality is better than Chinese Sterlings. Plus the neck on it is just like my 2008 MIM JAZZ. FASSSSSST!!!!!!!

    • @11coopbasscooper55
      @11coopbasscooper55  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey sorry about the late, late response. Well, the "SLO" special have dual "ACTIVE" pickups and the "NECK" is slimmer, plus the body is a "SMALLER" stingray body. That's it. It's like an old Fender jazz bass and some of the newer jazz basses. They made the necks slimmer, especially at the nut. That's about it. If you have small hands, the slimmer neck is good for you. Unlike me, I have long and big hands. A wider neck is very good for me. A slimmer neck is easier to get around. Yes, it would be a faster neck. I can agree with you on that. : D

    I sold my sub and bought a classic dual h used. As someone who's only played guitars and trying a bass for the the fist time I'd choose the SUB 4 I didn't know anything about guitars when I started all I knew were names I'd seen on instruments that my favorite bands used that being said Fender Mexican Strat because Americans were way to expensive and the Squire's felt cheap but I've learned you can find a decent instrument on a budget so if it sounds right and feels right 300 bucks for a beginner isn't bad considering I've seen good P basses go for more than that and since this video Sterling has introduced the Ray 24 for 500 bucks that's more than I paid for my first Mexican Stratocaster

    • @11coopbasscooper55
      @11coopbasscooper55  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, the ray has a "PASSIVE" bass pickup. While the ray34 has an "ACTIVE" bass pickup. The hardware on the 4 is thinner in quality, while the 34 hardware is thicker in quality. The bridges are different. Materials are different as well. Probably, the preamps are different too. The ray34 woods are probably different and comes with a veneer top as well. So with that being said; you will get a different tone from both basses. Hope the helps answer your question. : D

    • @11coopbasscooper55

      It's the "HARDWARE" and the "BRIDGE" and the "PICKUP". The ray 4 has a "PASSIVE" pickup and the hardware is probably not a "THICK" in material. The woods should play a part in the "TONE" as well. The ray34 has an "ACTIVE" pickup. Bassically, Sterling is saying; the ray34 can get you real close to the "ORIGINAL" STINGRAY'S tone. I've noticed on most of these bass demos when the player starts to slap, it's 99% of the time in the key of E. Why? Because most of the slapping is melodic to the open E string. Now what would be a feat is to slap in G or F# for your demo.
    You do play the slap style well. We all have our niche that we play. Thank you for doing a demo on this great bass.

    • @thomascurry3930
      @thomascurry3930 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can slap in any Key just slap f# on E string pull A on g string pull E on d string to f# note on d string and same on A string play B to C# same as E to f# notation you did on D string. It's best that you start with a double tap on the first F# and then pull the A. Now do this up and down the neck. You mentioned G as well, well it's your next move up the neck. You can inbox me on my FB page for help anytime. You will have a very good teacher of what is there on the bass

      That B to C# on A string can have a open A played before them by using the open A on that string. Once you have learned now place all notes after the double tap F# in any direction you will create your slap style in any key

      You can tune your bass F# B E A instead of EADG and slap in F# feel of playing in E

      Every musical chord is on the bass and is very simple to do keeping in mind where the minus root is and the 5 of your chord of which I don't use the 5 but one time in a chord and that is the power 5 chord.

    Aside from the workmanship (aesthetic value) of the Ray 34, I can't justify the extra five hundred or six hundred bucks. SUB Ray 4 for me. Good review.

      Sorry about the late response. I feel ya' bro. It's basically a taste thing. Also, it's how well you "PLAY". That to me, is the real answer to this instrument thing. : D

    I Prefer the 34. The pick up does not distort when hitting the bottom E as it did on the the Ray 4. I think it also depends on the music. I think the Ray 4 would be better on heavy rock/metal music. The Ray 34 I think is more versatile with better pick up and tone controls. This is what I think justifies the price difference. However I still think the Ray 4 is a fantastic bass for the price and it is much better than some of the more expensive models.

    I normally hate slap.....but this guy is so extraordinarily percussive with his right hand I found it fascinating. His left hand was very inventive too, great playing. There was so little in the sound too. The Ray34 likely had a slightly more quality sound.....but NOTHING that an audience would hear, that is a fact!

      Dr. Keith,...thank you my friend and you are so right. The audience wouldn't hear a difference. Now, can you pass that on to others in this video chat? Lol!

    Jemero,...lol! I wish I was the man! Graham, Wooten, Miller, Caron, Nitti, Jay Tee, Grainger, "DANNY WILSON" from Jeff Lorber Fusion, back in 1979, just to name a few. These are the "CAT'S!" that I learned from. ☺

    Just go's to show that more expensive doesn't necessarily mean better. The sub Ray sounded to my ears. I have headphones on too.

      Paul,...it's what sound good to you. Forget what I believe. Forget what everyone else think. It's a "PAUL" thing. That's how you have to look at it. : D

    The amp setting isn't making the most of the tone, but the Ray 34 is obviously superior.

      I have to respect your opinion. I like "GK"s" . You might like "AMPEG, MARKBASS, ACOUSTIC, SWR, EDEN, AVATAR, CRATE, MESA BOOGIE, etc. "GK!" is me. I definitely respect you on that choice of yours. Also, on what type of music you like. I'm a "JAZZ" fusion guy to heart really. Funk is in my bones too. : D
