The first time I heard this song a light went on in my head, I realized that Bob was answered at last...he had finally penetrated the veil of darkness and emerged into the light on the shores of purest love....

I saw this on TV back in '79 as an 11 year old young rock fan ... my first real exposure to Bob Dylan and his music. It was the beginning of becoming a life long fan. Great Song.

Since Bob has become "Christian"he has started doing adverts for big corporations for many millions of $$. I don't believe it's Christian to own an immoral amount of money,Jesus hated money and the rich, how can you have millions upon millions locked away while your brothers and sisters have no home or food?

    • @Ggeg0000

      self-rightous much...?
I believe the Man said "Judge not, lest ye be judged"...
All have fallen short of the glory of God. It is by grace we are saved not through self assumed holiness.

Dylan is a true legend. The man started movements, for God's sake. How many other singers can say that? The look in his eyes says it all during this classic performance. The message is right on target. We best listen, lest we die.

Great to see the audience so happy! Kris Kristofferson positively beams - and the dazzling lady with amazing hair a few seconds later also appears delighted. No one is looking at their phones or taking selfies - the good old days. The only less-than-impressed spectator was a certain John Lennon watching in New York.

That time when Dylan trolled the Grammy Awards ceremony.
They knew the song was longish so they asked him to shorten it in rehearsals. He comes on live and slows it down to a funky groove and ADDS a harmonica solo! Gotta love it. Sing it Bobby~ 😎

You may be an ambassador to England or France,
You may like to gamble, you might like to dance,
You may be the heavyweight champion of the world,
You may be a socialite with a long string of pearls
But you have to serve somebody, yes indeed
    You have to serve somebody,
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you have to serve somebody.
You might be a rock ‘n’ roll addict prancing on the stage,
You might have drugs in your pocket, women in a cage,
You may be a business man or some high degree thief,
They may call you Doctor or they may call you Chief
You may be a construction worker working on a home,

I think that's why he won the Prize! He had his finger above the pulse..I recently saw Paul Simon, he said he had his finger on the pulse of something...he was great as well, but Dylan is in his class all by himself...the Beatles too! Nobody does what they did, for a long time...they thought it was a flash in the pan...Dylan was a folky, then he went electric, many fans did NOT like that! oh well,...

It is not necessary to take literally the models of "Devil" and "Lord" to understand that we choose to serve ideas, good or bad, even if we imagine we create these ideas or control them. To evict the bad we must consciously appeal to, focus on, and act upon what is good. What we do will change what we think and feel long before the reverse will ever happen. thanks Bob, for making this message so funky and accessible.

    • @couponnation

Everything you think you know to be a reality, is a model of reality.
I did not say he was not speaking literally; i said someone who had a knee-jerk reaction to religion could still get something valuable from this song. Do not tell me what Dylan's intention is.

My LORD is a very jealous G-D
He doesn't like people worshiping false gods.
Got that. Good! Now get out your Bible and Pray and Pray and Pray and NEVER STOP PRAYING!

+MusicMC1 when you assume you are trying to make as ass of U and me. Don't jump to conclusions . There is lots of room for everyone in the world , be it religious fanatics , religious people , spiritual people , agnostics as well as atheists . Who appointed you judge and jury to stand in judgement . My take is we can all get along if we can just keep our private beliefs to ourselves. You want to see heaven , hell , fire and brimstone ? just look back at mankind's history and our present. More miracles are wrought by deeds than prayers. Go feed , clothes or house some decent honest folk in dire need and that is the greatest prayer you can do . You folks on the high moral ground need to come down and visit reality some time .

Also I read some of the religious debate below, and don't want to get into it except to say, MOST if not all make a choice (whether conscious or not) to serve God, the Devil, money, or power. And to me that is the point of the song -- there is no escaping the human compulsion to serve a person, spirit, or idea, so be careful which one you choose.

    WRITTEN BY: BOB DYLAN
You may be an ambassador to England or France
You may like to gamble, you might like to dance
You may be the heavyweight champion of the world
You may be a socialite with a long string of pearls
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You’re gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody
You might be a rock ’n’ roll addict prancing on the stage
You might have drugs at your command, women in a cage
You may be a businessman or some high-degree thief
They may call you Doctor or they may call you Chief
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You’re gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody
You may be a state trooper, you might be a young Turk
You may be the head of some big TV network
You may be rich or poor, you may be blind or lame
You may be living in another country under another name
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You’re gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody
You may be a construction worker working on a home
You may be living in a mansion or you might live in a dome
You might own guns and you might even own tanks
You might be somebody’s landlord, you might even own banks
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You’re gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody
You may be a preacher with your spiritual pride
You may be a city councilman taking bribes on the side
You may be workin’ in a barbershop, you may know how to cut hair
You may be somebody’s mistress, may be somebody’s heir
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You’re gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody
Might like to wear cotton, might like to wear silk
Might like to drink whiskey, might like to drink milk
You might like to eat caviar, you might like to eat bread
You may be sleeping on the floor, sleeping in a king-sized bed
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You’re gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody
You may call me Terry, you may call me Timmy
You may call me Bobby, you may call me Zimmy
You may call me R.J., you may call me Ray
You may call me anything but no matter what you say
You’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You’re gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody

The head rabbi of the USA had a very private talk with MR. Bob Dylan & he didn't shine any more light on the people he owes the light he received.

All those wealthy and/or famous celebrities smiling and nodding their heads like, "Oh yeah man, I know exactly what you're talking about, I had to pay an entire crew to mow the lawn of my estate yesterday." LOL.

I wish when people uploaded songs they'd tell us the specifics of where and when the particular version was performed. I mean Dylan released this in 1978 and performed it live on a regular basis from 78 - 81. So where and when was this one recorded?

The belief that atheist or agnostics don't "serve" anyone is blown apart by this song. I never really thought about this until I heard Dylan's song. But, obviously we all "serve somebody" either the Lord Jesus Christ or ourselves or some talent or some false god(s) or some other idol in our lives.

bulls eye. dylan brought it all back home here in one of his most underrated songs. as joe louis once said, you can run, but you cant hide.... the old man is down the road.

I serve myself most of the time: at least that's what I think. But sometimes, I serve authors who need their books edited, or readers who need a laugh, a cry, understanding, the shock of recognition. But to someone who has the grand view, who knows who I really serve? [P.S. Just a random thought; this ain't my "philosophical view."]

It seems as he aged, he became less intelligible. Saw his recorded performance for a grammy he won for Things have Changed. Could hardly understand a word of it. But you listen to his early stuff and he enunciated perfectly. After all, his lyrics were his genius and he made every effort to ensure you didn't miss a single word.

During an 'interview'... he admitted that he (doesn't) REMEMBER writing some of his 'earlier' songs...especially the ones that have 'strange' (off-the-wall) LYRICS!

Kristopherson, Loggins and Boone. Has anyone heard of The Second Chapter Of Acts or Phil Keaggy? It doesn't matter. We will cast down our crowns. Look at what is worthless in man.
