Building and destroying a sand mandala: a lesson of impermanence | LADAKH

  • In Zanskar, in the Indian Union territory of Ladakh, monks build sand mandalas to welcome important guests such as honoured lamas. Following a pattern, they carefully place the sand over the table. This huge teamwork usually takes weeks, and is a form of meditation. Once the sand mandala is completed and admired, it is destroyed.
    The destruction of the sand mandala symbolises the ephemerality of life : anything that is built will eventually cease to exist.

    Est-ce que cette tradition est Bouddhiste ou de la croyance Bön du Tibet, même si le dessin est bouddhiste.
    Est-ce que Sakya Muni a dit de faire ça, même si cela doit être bon pour vivre davantage son moment présent.
