And, I told her, The Little Mermaid won't cross billion dollar, this movie coming in between many hot movies like Guardians, Fast X an, spiderman, also disney does not has the same reputation that they had before with live action remakes and, time has changed after pandemic. That's easy.. in US diversity of the cast means much more than in the rest of the world, also the movies with such a big patriotic theme (like Maverick) is huge in US but in the rest of the world not so much. With Fast X, it's typical old school action movie, without any deep story or some preaching, so people like to just go and have fun. Most movies are now made by modern standard.. Bob Chapek made a huge mistake going all in on streaming. Yes, he had to deal with the pandemic. However once things started getting back to normal he didn't start putting movies back to theatres. Only the most recognisable IP got a cinematic release in 'Lightyear' but that movie, to me, felt like a streaming movie more so than the others. It was also confusing marketing because you couldn't tell how it fit in with the Toy Story universe. I'd argue it doesn't even if it has a character named Buzz Lightyear since almost nothing else fits. Then he drops movies that could have made the company money and are simply great films in their own right straight to streaming. Was he averse to making a profit? The decision making process for studios confounds me at times.

Hello Dan. Awesome quality as always. The point made on 16:47 is accurate. I think it's possible now to do a graph showing the start of Disney+ market and how it has affected theatrical releases box office records, as per one reason: people is not watching those films twice in a theatre. Perhaps as a result of the economic recession, the increase in the cost of living that leaves many without money to spend in luxury things like going to the movies more than once a week, or a month, or really once in a while when something really pops up. I also think that this worked for Super Mario because people don't necessarily know where it will stream, so it brought people to watch it before it disappeared.

TLM is mostly a good movie adaptation of the stage show, and is less good when it tries to call back to the animated movie instead.
It sounds strange phrasing it like that, but since the stage adaptation already had to make the story work with real actors, the live action movie trying to go back to looking like the animated one just looked awkward by trying to make real actors behave like cartoons. The movie was at its best when it just let the actors ACT.

Independent theaters are thing you want to support, but, they honestly usually kinda suck. Since basically the dawn of Universal there have been theater chains, so it's not like independent cinemas were there first establishing a specific atmosphere that the new chain theaters couldn't replicate.
What I mean is that the thing you don't see mentioned often us that a lot of the hype around independent cinemas tends to be "There aren't a lot of people there, and they serve alcohol."
You can't even really use the "They have lesser-known indie movies there," thing because Cineplex locations often have the lesser-known indies playing in one of their theaters if you have the luxury of being able to look for them, and a lot of the time independent theaters don't have access to them unless they specifically have a deal with the company that made the movie. Like, a lot of the independent theaters I've seen just play old movies on rotation throughout the year.

Went into Little Mermaid with tempered expectations and I was pleasantly surprised. There are no issues anywhere with the main cast. Bailey, McCarthy and Hauer-King (Eric) were all great in their leading roles! And I was skeptical of all three. The only problems I had with the movie revolved around smaller parts of the movie such as Under the Sea not being nearly as epic as it could have been, the added Scuttlebutt song which was horrifying and felt like it came out of nowhere (didn't fit in with the rest of the music), and some shoddy CGI here and there. Overall I left the theater entertained and pleasantly surprised. I think the biggest issue for the film is the casting but not for the reasons most people think. It's more that the trailers failed to capitalise on nostalgia - rather than racism.
These disney films are pure nostalgia baits. When you watch a trailer for a disney remake it reminds you of your childhood and you take your kids to watch it. Thats why casting ariel to look like the cartoon is so important, even if Hailey is a great actress and singer she doesnt Trigger the "member berry" response. These trailers HAVE to feel familiar for an international audience. For some people a red wig is enough to trigger it, but i think a for substantial amount of fans (especially internationally) it didnt. And these potenial viewers simply didnt turn up to the cinema, regardless of the quality of the film.
On a side note i reckon domestically the ""debate"" actually helped its commercial sucess as people wanted to support it. No such thing as bad publciity and all that. In countries where theres little ""debate"" its underperformed.

I think there could be multiple reasons why TLM didn't connect with other countries:
    - Lack of starpower. Halle Bailey is an unknown, Javier Bardem is not a moviestar that's going to bring in a crowd (usually a good supporting actor) and Melissa McCarthy is one that actually pushes some audience away.
You need strong word of mouth to compensate that.
    - Unoriginal. The trailer showed that it's basically a shot-for-shot remake or at least gave that impression. Trailer looked unexcited and dark and the previews (songs) in the last 2 weeks sounded like a weaker version of the original. My little nieces (target audience) picked Mario because it look more fun.
    - Lack of advertising. A lot of people didn't knew it came out. Did they spent it only on North America?
    - Runtime. It's 2,5 hours with previews (or maybe more?). Parents don't want to sit that long with their kids. They know that 1,5 hours is roughly the attention-span of their kid.
    - Live-action adaption fatigue. Disney does not have a great track record on this one.
-Financial situation. People have less to spend, they are going to more picky with their movies.
    - The weather. Last weekend was the first entire weekend of really nice sunny weather in these parts. A waste to spend this in a theatre. Maybe this week won't have a big drop like other films for this reason?
    - Political reasons. Just scroll down for various reasons. First let's see how Across the Spiderverse will be doing in China.
And maybe people in the U.S. have to understand that movies, which are popular in their country, are not popular outside the U.S..

    • @thetrib1

That's a lot I think it being the little mermaid is enough to sell alone. I think most of it is fatigue and politics. Which the fatigue part is very fair. No one is expecting these remakes to live up to their originals anymore, and they shouldn't expect it.

@@thetrib1 The worldwide box office is definately a signal the title is not nearly enough. I think politics in this whole debate is overrated. Nobody in my country even knows about these issues and even the media never talks about it. Outside the U.S. it's not even an argument to begin with.
But i think you are right about the fatigue one. I suffer from this as well when it comes to superhero movies. Can't even bother myself with those anymore. :D
Bad advertisement is the other one i think is big. Didn't trigger the nostalgia for Mom, didn't get the kids exciting because of the lackluster (and dark toned) trailer. I think it's that simple. Dads already took the kids to the Mario movie or go the upcoming Spiderman one.
I think Disney+ arrival could be an argument for some regions. But i'm pretty confident it doesn't in my area. I know very few people who have Disney+. Or some have it for 1 or 2 months per year.

HI Dan, (talking about 40:38 ) no it won't be weird to like SUGA's music as a middle aged man.
His solo songs are mostly hiphop with matured lines that anyone from 18 to 80s could relate to. He sings/raps about existential crisis, thought-provoking social commentary and personal reflections. Please avoid the stereotype that such artists are only for teenage girls :/ (i'm a 26yr old guy btw)

To be honest, as a Black woman I've had to sort of disconnect from social media with regard to The Little Mermaid. Since the movie has actually released a lot of that negativity has actually faded away but there are very loud racists out there who are rooting for this to fail

Girl, I agree. Especially with all of the r*cist memes/"jokes" people were making. It does a number on your mental even though it's not directed at you. The way they went so hard for this is crazy. How much do you wanna bet that the same people who were acting this way, are the same people who "don't see race/color/colorblind" and say that "We're only one race, the human race"? I saw some people like that in real life.

absolutely. i lost myself and got into a few internet debates before i stopped to step away and breathe. they have no idea how it wears on us to be told that we are diversity hires, pawns, political stunts etc. Our intelligence, talents and humanity always takes a backseat to our skin colour.

@@purplexzin no one is playing the victim. Y’all just don’t like being held accountable for your racism. Also, Halle has done nothing but praise the original film and the original Ariel, Jodie Benson. You’re a liar!

@@Remember_the_Time The worst part is we probably see and talk to these "secretly racist" people everyday, could be our coworkers or neighbors. They only have the courage to say these things due to internet anonymity. Usually these people are already miserable & hate themselves anyway, so they just take it out on everybody else. I feel sorry for them. Black Ariel lives in their head rent free, meanwhile this movie is still good & will be watched for generations to come.

The thing that I’d be interested to see is the impact of weather on theatrical business.
For example, this past week has been one of the first with beautiful sunshine and significant warmth across Europe after an exceptionally cold and wet winter and spring. Add to that it being a holiday weekend, and maybe this has impacted whether people go to watch movies. I know that I’m keen to watch the Little Mermaid, but sunny whether here in the UK has made me do thing where I’m spending more time out in the sun.
I thought it was an interesting possibility anyway.

Always love a new charts show Mr. Dan.
If I could make a suggestion: once you said a movies full title it would be better if you shorten it, as an example I would give Guardians of the Galaxy volume 3, because it gets a little jarring hearing it after the fifth time in it's entirety, Guardians 3 would suffice if you ask me.
Keep up the great work and I'm glad that you sound and look better. Cheers.

The only Disney live action remake I went to see in the theater was Aladdin because Aladdin is my favorite Disney animated movie. I also watched The Jungle Book on Disney+ because people had said it was a good remake that had a better story than the original. I thought they were both fine. The Little Mermaid sounds fine too, but I'm just not that interested in the Disney remakes in general.

People were hating so hard on the movie in my country when the trailer came out. They put up some black guy's picture and wrote Disney is making a movie on Queen Elizabeth. So yeah I think it got a lot of hate from racist people.

I had a fantastic time with Fast X. I knew what I was getting and it was unapologetic about itself. The Little Mermaid (which is want I saw yesterday because I had to take my class to see it) didn’t know what it wanted to be. I felt nothing when watching that movie because Ariel felt nothing. Compared to her animated counterpart, this Ariel was pretty, but had no drive. You could argue it’s because Ursula cast a spell on her to make her forget she needs true love’s kiss, but what is the point if they changed it so that Ariel had no interest in Eric to begin with? The whole time she was a mermaid, she just wanted to collect stuff. She never once mentioned it thought of Eric, which made it weird why her sisters thought she was in love when she wasn’t acting any different than she already was. Then at the end when she got what she wanted, she looked sad like she didn’t want to leave her family. I know they made all these changes to modernize Ariel, but she didn’t need modernization. She didn’t leave the ocean for a man, and anyone who still thinks that needs to go back and really watch the movie. Ariel was the start of Disney princesses taking a more active role in their stories, so she was already “modern.” Because she fell in love doesn’t make her weak. Love and femininity isn’t a weakness and nothing proves that more than The Fast and the Furious movies. Women can be both.
