I think just like Barbie, IO2 is tapping into something that we as a fragmented culture can still all relate to. We all forgot that the original Inside Out was pointing to emotional truths which we all can relate to no matter our status or core beliefs. So when there's a movie tackling anxiety in "the age of anxiety", we all felt seen and wanted to tell everyone to go see it. I think Dan was absolutely right when he said in his review that this will go down as another A-tier Pixar creation.

So, I was at the AMC in Kips Bay, NYC (this Sunday) watching the start of Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence. I was sitting next to the wheelchair companion seat (near the front). Two minutes into the movie, an older lady of no younger than her mid70s comes wheeling her completely overflowing grocery cart. She was going to sit literally next to me (in this theater - a quarter full - give or take...). She changes her mind midstream. Decides to take one of the middle companion seats in the same mostly empty row I'm in.
She settles in and starts asking me questions about the movie ... like did the movie start already and did she miss anything. Keep in mind the movie's opening credits were loudly playing and she's sitting 10 or 12 feet away from me. And as you might assume, it wasn't easy with the loud music and maybe her level of hearing....
Then she realizes this Japanese animated film ISN'T Thelma, the new June Squib led comedy. And how she hates cartoons.
The interaction lasted about 3 minutes. Felt like 10. If you didn't predict what happened next? She left the theater loudly proclaiming her dislike of "cartoons" and damning AMC for sending her to the wrong theater.

How many people are actually serious about boycotting Disney? Heck, how many are serious for the right reason of Disney being an evil money-grubbing megacorp gobbling up the entire entertainment industry rather than the wrong reason of Disney infecting woke politics into everything (as if Disney is some trailblazer in terms of diversity and representation? Hunger Games? Wonder Woman? Moonlight? Get Out? Crazy Rich Asians? What are those?).
Speaking of the last one, Planet of the Apes is the only Disney movie I've seen in theaters this decade. The other such non-Disney movies are Top Gun, Oppenheimer, Dune Part 2, and Furiosa.

Even funnier some of those people who say those things probably still went and saw this movie. They just can’t admit it because then it tarnishes their brand.

Most movies are PG-13, not R, because they do much better at the box office. That doesn't make them family-friendly.

    • @mathsalot8099
      @mathsalot8099 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

@tiffanysandmeier4753 Yes, but Kung Fu Panda 4 is not what I would call a "good" kids' movie. It was mediocre at best, and even my kids didn't really care to see it. Same thing with Garfield earlier this year. Same for Wish from last year... and Elemental... and TMNT (though that one is the best on the list I just provided). The last "good" kids movie I can think of is Spiderverse last June.
My point is not "kids movie = good," but frankly the opposite. Studios have not been putting in the proper time and quality to kids' productions. They just churn out garbage and say, "Well, it's for kids, so it doesn't have to be great... let's settle for 'good enough to make a buck.'"
Alternately, adults CONSTANTLY bemoan the fact that "their" movies are forced to be PG-13. They want R-rated Batman, R-rated MCU, R-rated Star Wars... my question is, why waste time and energy on that? All these properties are specifically made for kids and teens. Why make them R-rated? It ruins the characters rather than staying true to the spirit of the original story. And it sucks up a lot of time and talent that could be spent actually making GOOD MOVIES!

Not only did Inside Out 2 grow with it's audience but there are universal themes that make this movie something that speaks to people. I went to see it with my best friend and we had a far reaching conversation about anxiety and how we each process it as we're both dealing with issues related to anxiety. I think parents can see themselves and what they went through as well as maybe understanding what their kids might be dealing with. Not to mention it gives kids and teens an opening to discuss some tough issues through talking about the movie. It's also just a funny movie with some very clever ideas. These among many other reasons are why this movie is succeeding and I think following up Barbie and Oppenheimer we're seeing that audiences are responding to stories that are well written and have something to say about the world and the humans who live there.

because the studio won't play the movie in the theatres if they don't agree to the demand.
The studio has a lot of power in that regard .
Disney during the force awakens actually took 100% or close to 100% of the first weekend gross

Congo is a fascinating story...I don't know if Dan remembers this but this was the big Michael Crichton project. 93 was Jurassic Park, 94 was ER, 95 was supposed to be Congo and Frank Marshall was going to have his big breakout blockbuster after Alive and Arachniphobia and it pretty much killed Marshal's career. It made money and was a hit but it was the start of the fall of the Crichton decade. The Lost World, Twister, Sphere and 13th Warrior all came out later to varying levels of success but after 1999 that was pretty much it for Crichton.

I saw inside out 2 Saturday and it was something I didn’t know I needed. I love the original and this one more than lived up to it. My theater experience was almost ruined by these two kids in the front row talking at a high volume for the last 20 minutes which was the big emotional core/message part. Luckily I tuned them out and am so happy with how well this film is performing and how it will continue to preform.

ngl, before it came out I didn't expect it to a) be good or b) to gross over $200m total in the US.
it's already basically double that in a couple of weeks. And it was also really good. Like surprisingly great and I kinda want to go watch it again. It's not as good as the first one, but it got so much closer than I thought they would be able to.

Hey, Dan, love Charts as a fellow box office nerd. Appreciate all you do. 🙂
Just a quick thought on the profitability charts. What if you format them like this:
    International Gross: $$$$$
    40% Investor Cut: $$$
Just thought that looks simpler to understand as currently putting the cut % with the gross visually implies that the non domestic distributors are getting a % that the investors are actually getting. Just a thought, Thanks again!

Your "Franchise Tracker: Pixar" chart. Wouldn't it better labeled as just Pixar Movie Tracker? Inside is the same franchise, but you have each movie individually listed. On that note, a chart of how the franchises themselves compare in Pixar would be interesting. I assume it is Toy Story and down, but interesting idea.
