That Warner Bros Opening Weekend chart looks so hilarious. Everything’s so dark and gloomy and then there’s Barbie in the middle looking as pink and perfect as ever.
In Estonia, the release of Barbie was wildly successful. We are quite introverted people, but seeing how we all collectively went to the cinema dressed in pink, with whole screenings selling out like hotcakes, and during the movie even clapping twice - at the start and at the end. Barbenheimer became a legit phenomenon. When non film nerds are talking about a double feature, dressing up for a movie, and debating about which one to watch first, you know it's not some manufactured BS. And the fact that both movies massively over performed is awesome. Almost everyone I knew saw one or both of these movies this weekend. They sold my fiancé on the idea of seeing both but we ended up only seeing Barbie. If we do see Opennheimer in theaters, it will be the 70mm film version. Otherwise, we will just wait to rent it. There really is no rush on our end.

Can we just appreciate how nice it is to see Dan so excited and JOYFUL during a box office video. It felt like this summer was so endlessly bleak with underperformances. Seeing the huge uptick in business and how excited Dan is to report on it, truly cements this as being the best box office analysis on TH-cam/probably the entire internet.

I run a small twin-screen theater. We could only open one, and chose Barbie! Best choice we could have made! People were SO excited for it! Not only did the customers dress up, but my 18 y/o employee bought us all matching shirts to wear opening night! XD
@@RishiShahSays clean screen requirements keep us from being able to show more than 1 new film on any screen at once. Only split-capable or repertory films can show on the same screen.
Not gonna lie... I thought that releasing any movie a week after Mission Impossible would be a huge mistake, specially a comedy like Barbie, and a 3h drama about the life of a historical figure. Outstanding.
I feel like Barbie and Oppenheimer did so well because they’re ORIGINAL movies! It’s not a reboot or a remake or a sequel or the 7th movie in a series. I think people are really wanting original stories and ideas and both of these totally delivered. Was so happy going to to the theater this weekend, can’t remember the last time I saw it that busy! 👏🏻
I mean... Barbie is a very, VERY famous IP that also has a lot of nostalgia. Oppenheimer is about a well-known figure in history from a very hyped director. I guess *technically* they're original, but by no means were they a gamble for either studio, nor a complete mystery for audiences
The success of both Barbie and Oppenheimer is such a wholesome story and a great breath of fresh air-- especially considering how cynical and discouraging the industry has often felt this year, both on and off screen. This is what happens when you make two movies with directors who are passionate about the craft, with quality production value, modest budgets, and lead actors with charm and class on the screen. And to see people really support both films is something you would think is rare nowadays.
I don't think I've ever seen 2 movies that are so different become a meme the way barbenheimer has. I don't think I'll ever fully understand why things become a meme lol
I don't think anyone truly understands why things become a meme. If someone did, they'd surely sell it to a corporation to be pillaged for money until everyone moves on
Everyone's different, but from someone who participated in it, it was the idea of two completely different films having more in common than you'd think and that there was room for both. Mix in the fun and energy of it all, and it was hard not to BARBENHEIMER. 😂
This is a pure guess on my part, Dan, but pulling "Haunted Mansion" to a July theatrical date, by a little quick math, means it's likely to show up on Disney+ right in time for the Halloween season. it might not be a GOOD reason, but it might be the reason they've got in mind.
I was wondering why it would be set to release in July.. that does make some sense. Kinda sad that they seem to have sacrificed it's theater performance for streaming debut.
@@albertstock85 what happened, this was the mission that was going to be the first to break 1 billion, I get the feeling most folks probably just felt I catch it on streaming
This is the first time my mind was blown by the Road to Recovery graph. The fact that Barbenheimer managed to skyrocket the box office this weekend even more than both Mario and Spider-Verse, that is a really REALLY impressive feat.
July 18-20, 2008. A friend saw a DGA screening of Hellboy 2 with Guillermo Del Toro in attendance. He was a very good sport. He spoke the audience before the movie started and said (think of his heavy accent: “I’d like to thank this theater for being the only theater not playing The Dark Knight. And don’t worry, if you don’t like the movie, Dark Knight is playing across the street.”
I remember seeing Hellboy 2 on its opening weekend-one week before TDK. After it ended, I said to my buddy “Wow, that was great. It’s gonna do real well this summer.” His response: “It will be forgotten by next week.” 😂😢
I work at a smaller movie theater in LA and Babrenheimer gave us our busiest weekend ever since opening in 2018! Had our first, second, and fourth most profitable days. I can only imagine what this is like for workers in bigger National chain theaters.
We went to see M: I. 7 in the theatre today, & there was a bus load of little kids dropped off. I thought they were there for Elemental, but they were going to Barbie.
When I went to see Barbie on Sunday night I felt like part of a real community. Women everywhere were wearing pink, you could really tell they were seeing Barbie. The movie had sold out the day before, I was lucky enough to think about buying tickets online or I would have missed out. I saw a poor young girl crying with her mum leaving the theatre because they couldn’t get tickets to the session. I’m planning on seeing Oppenheimer too, but I’m going with my grandfather and it’s hard to line up schedules. Can’t wait to see it though! What a time to be a movie goer.
Saw both Barbie and Oppenheimer on Saturday. I've skipped literally everything else so far this entire year. I wasn't even interested in seeing Barbie until some friends suggested that we do Barbenheimer as a group. If not for that, then I would have only planned on seeing Oppenheimer and Dune in theaters this entire year.
@@shazanali692 No point. It’s not going to be a huge phenomenon, and it will undoubtedly be on a streaming platform by the end of the year, so I’d rather save my money. Plenty of other movies to watch in the meantime.
The happiness Dan exudes throughout the whole episode is just woderful and definitely exactly how many movie-loving people around the world are feeling (and looking) these days! ❤
100% i haven’t felt this genuinely excited for the summer movies since probably 2017 or something. I mean im young so i havent rlly experienced the super big summer of movies since slowly ppl have been less and less interested. Considering the strikes, the success of Barbenheimer as original products, the big flops of shitty superhero blockbusters, I’m feeling hopeful again for future of movies
You’re right, these are two of the best not just film but entertainment media marketing campaigns ever. They realized the product they had was awesome, they talked about it A LOT on social media through creating memes around their film and the competition of both Oppenheimer and Barbie. At the same time again the more each film was talked about it got peoples eyes on them. That is what each films marketing campaign needs to do. I wish we could see that with all of them. The next film coming out that has a chance to replicate it to their own is TMNT mutant mayhem. So far they’re on track as they just released posts about an Xbox controller giveaway for pizza smelling controllers.
Social media also helped grow excitement for No Way Home, because of the leaks, although, as a movie fan, I still think that we were robbed from one of the biggest moments in cinema history. Just imagine if there was no leaks, and then watching Toby and Andrew sow up out of nowhere. I would loose my shit...
I kinda feel that if it wasn't for social media half the people who did the Barbenheimer double bill probably wouldn't have seen either film in normal times. For many people, it was less about the specific films and more about being part of an event.
Finally they do something good that get people outside and engaged with the world, instead of the reverse, im not gonna thank social media for that since they’ve also been helpful in destroying socialisation and indirectly just going outside to movies
It makes me so happy to see Barbie sticking out like a sore pink thumb among all these comic book movies on these charts. Women go to the movies too and now that should be obvious to the studio executives.
I found it pretty hilarious how much of Barbie was that DiCaprio pointing at the screen meme of "I recognize that!" that comic book movies have, often far too correctly, been criticized for being. I enjoyed Barbie, but I don't know if I'm going to enjoy any of the announced 35 other Mattel projects: it really feels like they might have missed the point! Or worse, they haven't. I at least hope we get the cringey nerd casts arguing over the Hall H trailer leaks arguing what's going to happen next in the MCU - Mattel Cinematic Universe. If I had to feel the reflected shame of liking the same thing as those dorks, you deserve the same there, too 😋
It wasn't so obvious when Ocean's 8 came out, or Charlie Angels or ghostbusters 2016, so you could forgive the studios for thinking movies weren't that popular with the female demographic
My wife and I watched Barbie and Oppenheimer last Thursday and Friday. It was an awesome theater experience for each, and for different reasons. We also took our son to Spiderverse again on Sunday because we think it will be leaving theaters soon and we wanted to experience it one more time in the theater. What an excellent movie. We really have been spoiled this year.
I have had _such_ a good time with Barbenheimer last week! First at a special release event with my mom, in a frilly dress with a pink scarf in my hair, then Oppenheimer on the earliest Saturday Imax screening. I'm seeing both films again this week, and I'm bringing some friends. I haven't felt this connected to moviegoers worldwide since Avengers Endgame came out.
My son and I went and saw Mission Impossible while my wife and daughter saw Barbie. We both loved our movies and Tom Cruise has solidified himself as my son's (age 8) hero.
I went to see Barbie, and it was a full theatre with a good proportion of men and women, everyone was laughing and having a good time, it was such an amazing experience and my first good cinema experience since COVID, what a great feeling, I feel the good old life before COVID is slowly coming back
I really hope Mission Impossible 7 comes back strong from next week. Having seen Oppenheimer and Barbie, Mission Impossible 7 is still my best movie of the year and I will be seeing it again. It absolutely blew me away, and it deserves a higher gross than it's going to get.
I see Dan’s wearing an Attack on Titan shirt with the greatest character of all time Levi Ackerman. Lol Glad you’re finally watching this incredible anime Dan. It’s a masterpiece in story telling as far as I’m concerned.
@@DanMurrellMoviesGood to hear! It’s got a very complex story with many twists and turns but the world building and character development is so well thought out, it’s insane. Stick with it! The series finale airs this fall!
Barbie has a runtime of less than two hours while Oppenheimer clocks in at a full three. Two sets of numbers I would like to see crunched are the number of Showtimes (not theaters) each movie had last weekend, and where Oppie is on a list of box office returns for movies that have an 180 minute or over length. #askdan
Where I'm from, IMAX is double the price of a regular screen and it was sold out mostly which could have made up for the fewer screenings somewhat is my theory 🤔
@@ermeeleer Yea but outside of major cities there aren't that many IMAX theatres, so sure it would have helped but compared to the number of 'normal'' theatres, I think the run time would far exceed the IMAX bump
I read that graphic the same way. Apparently the image is meant to indicate the female demo for Barbie and Oppenheimer followed by the male demo for Barbie and Oppenheimer.
It's almost like if good, engaging movies are made, people will show up to watch them. Such a novel concept! I love that people wanted to support both movies because you can enjoy both movies.
I kinda feel that if it wasn't for social media half the people who did the Barbenheimer double bill probably wouldn't have seen either film in normal times. For many people, it was less about the specific films and more about being part of an event.
I went to see Barbie at a small local theatre that only has one screen (but quite a big auditorium), and they had to start the movie 15 minutes late because the line at the ticket counter was so long, they couldn't get through everybody in time. Never experienced that before XD
I love how Barbenheimer is the complete reverse of the Minions craze from last year because this time people aren't going to watch a movie to make fun of it but because they're actually excited for it in so many different ways.
I go to the cinema at least twice a week and im pretty sure this is the first weekend since no way home where i was actually sat next to someone because the theatres were so full. For both films. I truly think Oppenheimer would not have had the same success if not for the whole Barbenheimer trend. But similarly people who would've never dreamed of seeing Barbie saw it because of the trend. And word of mouth is gonna go far. I have friends who haven't been to the cinema since before Covid who are doing the double feature, it's so exciting to see
What you said about people having to come back during the weekday is so true because I went to the theatre last night (caught an early blind screening of Talk to Me and it was phenomenal) and it was so full of pink and still crowded with people I wondered if there were 2 sundays in a row, or a holiday. I've NEVER seen a weekday, especially a Monday, that crowded. Made me feel out of place cuz I had already used my all pink outfit on Friday for the premiere, haha.
I understand the thinking that Mission: Impossible should have moved to August, but Tom Cruise does a LOT of promotion for these movies and the premieres are also a huge part of these movies. Due to the strike, there's no way they could have afforded to not have Tom promote it for a month. I really think its release date is a strike thing and trying as hard as possible to get it all before the strike. If anything, they should have moved up to the July 4th weekend.
Hadn't thought of that, but it's true. He was definitely aware that a strike was coming. But then he should've moved up the release. No one knew Barbenheimer would be this big, but he knew Mission would lose IMAX screens. He should've moved his movie
Hindsight being 2020, if they opened it the week before Flash/Elemental it probably would've steamrolled everything released this June and gotten most of it's money before Barbenheimer shut it out
It may have helped to some degree, but I also think people have been overestimating the overall interest in Mission Impossible as a franchise, especially in the US. They’ve typically done well, but were never massive blockbusters. There was hope that maybe Top Gun’s success last year would spill over into Dead Reckoning, but that didn’t really happen and there wasn’t a single day where it tracked ahead of Fallout, even in its opening weekend where it had no competition. Despite its head start by releasing earlier in the week, it only took 9 days for Fallout to surpass it.
I think it should have been moved up to April. Mario Bros had April wide open for itself. With the strikes there's no way that August or September would have worked
The irony is, I heard WB wanted the Barbie premiere to go up against Nolan after he parted ways with them and what probably propelled this to become one of his top grossers is precisely because it premiered with Barbie and the Barbenheimer effect 😂 I watched both over the weekend and tbh I think both films truly owe their success to the people who came up with the Barbenheimer and how it all went super viral. I wouldn't have watched these 2 in the cinema if not for the eventisation of Barbenheimer. And I don't think anyone can strategise this kind of virality either... Amazing... All I can say is wow what a time to be alive 😂
Putting Barbie #10 on your prediction is definitely fair. When this movie was announced I was already excited, mostly because of Gerwig directing, but assumed it would be more like Little Women where it would do well, but not being a massive smash. If you told me a year ago that a Gerwig/Baumbach movie would not only beat a Nolan movie but possibly be the biggest movie of the year I would have thought you were crazy. I'm sure nostalgia and the Barbie brand are helping, but Gerwig is just a really good writer and director and I'm glad people are seeing that. A24 should try to re-release Lady Bird.
I meant to see Barbie on Saturday, but couldn’t due to my own schedule, and saw it on Monday afternoon and there were so many people in pink! Also, since I was dressed up for the movie, everywhere I went after people were asking me if I liked it (which I did), so I think it will continue to do well. A lot of women, I think particularly moms, are not the type to rush out opening weekend, so I think there is a lot left to tap in the 35+ female category. I did see quite a few men, as well as Dads and daughters. Very sweet!
Nice to hear people having a good time at the theatres. It’d be interesting to see if Barbie has legs in the BO because industry predictions say it’s front-loaded.
Barbie became the second highest grossing opening weekend in Brazil ever, second only to Endgame! Everything is pink here. I ate a pink pizza this Saturday!🤣 the Barbie marketing team was great, but the amount of organic promotion this movie got is incredible! That pizza had nothing to do with the studio, but everyone wanted to jump on the pink bandwagon. Glad the movie is actually good! I did the Barbenheimer experience on Thursday. Barbie in XD, Oppenheimer in IMAX. went to different theaters and I loved it. This weekend will go down in history.
You are totally right about Barbie having legs. I was at a sold out 3pm showing on a Monday (the next showing after it was also sold out). It was impossible for me to get to opening weekend showings at my local theater unless I wanted to go at a late 10pm showing. I know my sister is going on Wednesday. People are going in on weekdays, that just couldn't make it into the weekend.
I'm really happy to hear Barbenheimer worked! I watched Barbie yesterday and had a ton of fun. I have yet to watch Oppenheimer but I plan on doing so this week. Side note: the concessions at the theatre I went to were so busy that they were sold out of certain food items so the one item I wanted I couldn't get. One of the staff told me they had around six hundred movie goers over the weekend. Impressive.
First time i watched 2 movies in the cinema on the same weekend. was truly hyped for oppenheimer and had to support barbie as well. it is/was a worldwide cultural event, so happy to see that movies still can do that.
You're not alone with being surprised at just how big Barbie was going to be. I'm surprised as well. I enjoyed it and so did the friends I went with but I didn't expect it to hit this big.
I would have seen Oppenheimer this past weekend if I could've but I could only get 70mm IMAX tickets on August 6th. I really enjoyed Barbie and I loved going to the theater and seeing all the pink. It's been awhile since I've seen that kind of excitement in the air that wasn't a superhero movie and it was fun. I love how organic this whole thing was. The studios couldn't have foreseen this and while I'm sure they're thrilled, we all know a bunch of clueless execs are plotting to see how they can replicate this and it won't be organic, the audience will see right through it and it will fail.
I NEVER thought barbie would make that much. It was a movie that I couldn’t quite get a gauge on as far as interest. I believe she has a shot at the billion dollar club. 💕💅🏾
I have literally been waiting for this video since I saw the box office numbers. I was as excited as Dan about the overall box office performance this weekend!!
If I was Tom Cruise and Paramount I would do an advertising push in another week celebrating the movie experience of Barbie / Oppenheimer and at the same time reminding moviegoers Mission is still there. I think people will circle back to it, but they might need a reminder it is still in theaters.
I am a huge MI fan but DRp1 trailers were not exciting enough and word of mouth is making up for it. I also believe a lot of people would prefer to see part 1 and 2 closer together and not a whole year out. I'm hoping that DRp2 will make DRp1 feel more interesting once the full story is out.
Thanks for spotlighting the Paramount Theater! One of my favorite places from living in Austin. Last movie I saw there was a screening of Fury Road last summer right before moving
I think Barbie is going to have some incredible legs… I’m looking at showings at my local AMC, and nearly every showing until August 3rd is currently almost full! Granted, this is the AMC at Disney Springs, so I’m curious if it’s different at a less touristy theater. Either way, I think it indicates a pretty nice hold for Barbie next week!
Where I live there were NO tickets for Barbie for the whole weekend on any of the showings even mid-day showings! You can tickets this week but it’s still crowded!
I bought my tickets for both Barbie & Oppenheimer weeks in advance and it was already difficult to find seats for Barbie. Can't remember the last time that's happened. My niece missed out on tickets and ended going to Transformers. There's money Transformers wouldn't have made otherwise.
I couldn’t wait for this, so happy to hear good news!! Saw Oppenheimer on Thursday night… and Barbie tonight (to a nearly sold out theater…on a TUESDAY!!)
This weekend was great, but I feel like next week's chart is going to be even more interesting because we're going to be able to see the 2nd weekend's drop/legs % for Barbenheimer. If we look at Monday's numbers, the legs promise to be very good and a LOT of movement in the 2023 charts is going to happen in the next 2 weeks.
How do we get Hollywood to recognize what happened this weekend? Three people who came out of the indie film world that used to make small movies (Gerwig, Baumbach, Nolan) have been given opportunities in their careers to grow but retain their voices and vision and now that is paying off in a saving of the industry kind of weekend. For film nerds like them, that is what motivated me to see these films WAY more than IP or SFX or even innovative marketing.
Was fun to be part of this weekend. Great to see cinema continue thriving. Films at home are convenient but nothing will ever match the magic of consuming a new film in a room full of strangers that become a group of fans over time.
My bf and I went to see Barbie on Monday night around 6 after I got off of work… the theatre was packed! The last time I went to see a movie on a weeknight and it was full, it was the Thursday opening night of no way home, which is a pretty good comparison
The Paramount Theatre can't thank you enough for your incredibly kind shout out for our theatres! We really care about our community and strive to focus on uplifting and inspiring everyone that walks through our doors through quality programming and educational camps for kids. If you're ever in Austin, please stop in and see a show on us!
What the hell is going on at Disney? You've got Bob Iger complaining about the cost of doing what the WGA and SAG-AFTRA want while the budgets for movies from every studio under the Disney umbrella are ridiculously over the top. If A24 can afford it it seems like DIsney shouldn't have a problem. It almost seems counterintuitive to not give the unions what they're after. It costs less to have someone create a story people will enjoy than it does to cover up any shortcomings with a ludicrous amount of VFX that then screw over the people who make the VFX as well.
That's Disney's problem, their model is get a rough idea on paper, go shoot a whole lot and then work out what the movie is during editing and get any reshoots required. Its an expensive process but this worked really well when each movie made over $1bn.
To be fair, those movies weren't made under Iger's time. Movies coming out this year would've been budgeted during Chapek's time. But, yes, Disney budgets are out of control.
I don’t agree with Iger’s statements, but I also think people don’t understand how much more expensive it was to make movies safely under COVID restrictions. My guess is we’ll see budgets come down dramatically over the next couple years.
@@mcbean1 That's been the real problem. It's not so much that the brands have been diluted. Although the amount of releases certainly didn't help. It's that they more or less coasted on the goodwill of those franchises which is now all but gone. If they want audiences to come back every brand needs to be rebuilt and that takes talented people across all facets of film making and these people deserve to get paid fairly.
@@Flashfm3000 By now those costs should have been factored in. Do we even know for sure if covid protocols are reported as part of the overall budget? Even with it's increased budget when they decided to give it a theatrical release 'Blue Beetle' has a relatively moderate budget at $120 million. That new Gareth Edwards flick, 'The Creator' apparently comes in at around $80 million. Although there's some new thing they did to keep the budget low I haven't fully read up on so put a pin in that one. It can be done. With talented artists and spending a little bit more time and money before filming to lock it down you save more when all is said and done.
Maybe, I honestly think they just didn't want to budge from being in the middle of summer. August has a reputation for being for third string "quirky" blockbusters. It absolutely would've done better there though. Even giving MI7 the date that Transformers had, and then putting Transformers in August would've worked better
I survived the double feature! I was so happy to see so many seats filled for both! Also my theater had the showtimes perfectly laid out to see one after the other with a small amount of time for intermission
I saw both this weekend, thoroughly enjoyed both (given quite the whiplash in tone watching back to back). It's just great to see two very talented directors with clear visions allowed to make their movies. Both theatres were full of people having fun, I haven't had a theatre experience like that in a long time. Only other movie I've seen this year is Spider-Verse.
I was totally going to do the Barbenheimer double feature this past weekend, but life got in the way and I didn't. I ended up watching Barbie on Wednesday, and the theater was 90% full, and it was a sea of pink outfits! The energy felt like a scaled down Endgame. There was a lot of engagement, laughter and a few tears. So I can definitely see it having good legs. I'm going to see Oppenheimer either tonight of tomorrow night, and I'm equally excited.

I run a small twin-screen theater. We could only open one, and chose Barbie! Best choice we could have made! People were SO excited for it! Not only did the customers dress up, but my 18 y/o employee bought us all matching shirts to wear opening night! XD
That's so cool. I grew up in a town with a small neighborhood two screen theatre. Got me in the feels.👍😊
Stupid question but what is the other movie playing at your theatre? Cause I’m guessing twin-screen means you have two movies screening? 🤓
Why not split shows during the day?

I 100% agree
Great directors too
I mean... Barbie is a very, VERY famous IP that also has a lot of nostalgia. Oppenheimer is about a well-known figure in history from a very hyped director. I guess *technically* they're original, but by no means were they a gamble for either studio, nor a complete mystery for audiences
@@32fpsyea I agree these aren’t your typical “original“ movies they definitely had a lot going for them already
@@BigZ-19 It is. get over it black
I don't think they're all that different, but yeah, memes
I think it is exactly that. They were so different it could work as cross promotion instead of competition.
I don't think anyone truly understands why things become a meme. If someone did, they'd surely sell it to a corporation to be pillaged for money until everyone moves on
It's just such a perfect yin/yang. Feminist nostalgic comedy vs dead serious existential biopic
They probably wrote it off as a flop and decided to make it a streaming movie with a theatrical release
@@Ch1sslthat makes sense. They seem to have done very minimal advertising.
I was wondering why it would be set to release in July.. that does make some sense. Kinda sad that they seem to have sacrificed it's theater performance for streaming debut.
Yeah my guess was they wanted it streaming for Halloween since a lot of families do Halloween marathons

It’s gonna do real well this summer.”
His response: “It will be forgotten by next week.” 😂😢
I work at a smaller movie theater in LA and Babrenheimer gave us our busiest weekend ever since opening in 2018! Had our first, second, and fourth most profitable days. I can only imagine what this is like for workers in bigger National chain theaters.
What a weekend for movie history!
It will be the last box office weekend like this we'll see for a while

Will you watch the flowers movie DiCaprio is in, October

The happiness Dan exudes throughout the whole episode is just woderful and definitely exactly how many movie-loving people around the world are feeling (and looking) these days! ❤
100% i haven’t felt this genuinely excited for the summer movies since probably 2017 or something. I mean im young so i havent rlly experienced the super big summer of movies since slowly ppl have been less and less interested. Considering the strikes, the success of Barbenheimer as original products, the big flops of shitty superhero blockbusters, I’m feeling hopeful again for future of movies
Social media did it! I’m pretty sure these numbers wouldn’t have been achieved otherwise.
Agreed
I been waiting for this week charts like never before
The hype was real!!
I knew Dan was going to be so excited to do charts this week, he's in his happy place!
So much joy in his voice!
I thought so too and was looking forward to this one.
It makes me so happy to see Barbie sticking out like a sore pink thumb among all these comic book movies on these charts. Women go to the movies too and now that should be obvious to the studio executives.
Give them two days and they will have forgotten again.
As a women, I love a lot of comic book movies way more than Barbie
I don't think any of what's in the top 5 are comic book movies.
Barbie is a phenomenon. $26 million estimsted for Monday. This thing is on its way to $1 billion.
That’s wonderful!
Looking at the 3 day opening weekend movie concepts: Toys, Video Games, and Comic Books. Clearly we are all just big kids and I love it!
I see Dan’s wearing an Attack on Titan shirt with the greatest character of all time Levi Ackerman. Lol Glad you’re finally watching this incredible anime Dan. It’s a masterpiece in story telling as far as I’m concerned.

He kind of does that with the revenue per theater numbers.
Ticket admissions [Valliant Renegade] would be more accurate.
He does theatres because there is no resource that lists how many screenings of a movie are done?
27:07 man, Barbie went so above and beyond expectations, even its demographics surpass 100%
Still not as successful as Morbius.
I have friends who haven't been to the cinema since before Covid who are doing the double feature, it's so exciting to see
Dan, talking to Barbie and Oppenheimer box office: I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
Thank you for updating the Rotten Tomatoes segment with the side by side comparison. Makes it much easier to see the disparities.
@@tronam sure, but no M:I film had dropped 64% until now. The reality is, the release date hurt it.
I think it should have been moved up to April. Mario Bros had April wide open for itself. With the strikes there's no way that August or September would have worked
Love that Barbie has entered the Summer Box Office Race with an appropriately pink line 💖😉

This is also the rare consecutive AAA Cinemascore(MI7,Oppenheimer,Barbie)
Barbie became the second highest grossing opening weekend in Brazil ever, second only to Endgame! Everything is pink here. I ate a pink pizza this Saturday!🤣 the Barbie marketing team was great, but the amount of organic promotion this movie got is incredible! That pizza had nothing to do with the studio, but everyone wanted to jump on the pink bandwagon. Glad the movie is actually good! I did the Barbenheimer experience on Thursday. Barbie in XD, Oppenheimer in IMAX. went to different theaters and I loved it. This weekend will go down in history.
Barbie having pretty good legs is my favorite quote of the day.
This weekend proves people want to see new things. No sequels or franchises. Fresh original takes.
Well, Barbie is a big franchise though
You are totally right about Barbie having legs. I was at a sold out 3pm showing on a Monday (the next showing after it was also sold out). It was impossible for me to get to opening weekend showings at my local theater unless I wanted to go at a late 10pm showing. I know my sister is going on Wednesday. People are going in on weekdays, that just couldn't make it into the weekend.
I'm shocked, SHOCKED that "go woke, go broke" isn't quite as accurate a statement as the outrage mob likes to think it is 😂
Who knew that with reasonable budgets and movies that people actually want to see would create box office magic??
Looking at the ranking of Nolan Openings, one thing is abundantly clear:
Those posters are all exquisite.
Really like the theaters lost chart, Dan. Keep including that please. Valuable data.

Marvel anticipated It. That's why they moved The Marvels to November
Barbie is a shorter movie - I notice it’s got so many more showings per day. Oppenheimer still packed this week especially IMAX ❤️👍🏻

I hope to re-watch it when it's back in IMAX if I can make the time
Thanks for spotlighting the Paramount Theater! One of my favorite places from living in Austin. Last movie I saw there was a screening of Fury Road last summer right before moving

I've been so looking forward to this episode of Charts and you didn't let me down Dan, brilliant.
I love the reviews decoded section! My favorite part of the show since you introduced it. SO helpful!
Saw Barbie Thursday and Oppenheimer Friday. Loved both movies. Im so glad both of these films did so well.
For Mission Impossible, I wonder if talks of the strikes had some influence in its opening not getting pushed to August or later.
4:00 I went to see Sound of Freedom yesterday and I also can confirm that it was about 75% full. And the Barbie and Oppenheimer screens were full!
Barbenheimer doing well is great for theatres and audiences. Yin & Yang, the perfect balance.
Great episode, Dan! That Road to Recovery chart was wild.
I work at a Regal theater and every showing of sound of freedom is always packed
