    as many have said here, Dance is _exactly_ how I pictured Lord Vetinari (save for the hair), but I want to draw attention to a specific bit of his performance: the way he says "don't let me detain you." TOTALLY nails the way it was described in the books - it's absolutely chilling

      The one thing that bothers me about Dance as Vetinari is that he looks a lot like how he was envisioned to look by Terry Pratchett and Paul Kidby minus the colour of his hair, Vetinari's being said to be black in the books; which could've been fixed in production. But apart from that, he looks and acts like he was made for the role.

    Charles Dance even managed to nail Vetinari's 'sense of humor'. That is... he doesn't usually show it, if it's showing, somebody is really in an awful lot of trouble. He managed to radiate menace and intimidation without ever directly acting threatening or raising his voice, and thus when he DOES raise his voice snappishly, it kind of makes the blood run cold.
    Truly the perfect actor for Vetinari. I am fine with some deviation from the established appearance so long as the character is portrayed right. And Charles Dance didn't portray Vetinari, Charles Dance BECAME Vetinari. His hair color bothered me zero from the moment he was on screen because he *WAS* Vetinari, through and through, from the way he moved to the expressions to the way he spoke. Not a 'version' of Vetinari, he became the character, stepped right off the page, and I freakin' APPLAUD him for it.

    Dance's assessment of Lord Vetinari is incorrect. Lord Vetinari didn't manipulate; his methods were far more subtle and refined. As Lipwig observed, Vetinari doesn't pull your strings, he lets you pull your own strings. The entire reason Vetinari chose Lipwig to run the post office was because he could see Lipwig's character was well suited to performing the task required. During Lipwig's tenure as the Post Master, Vetinari never told Lipwig what to do. Lipwig came up with all his own ideas and implemented them. The most Vetinari did was to remind Lipwig that he was keeping an eye on him.

Its not like Dance read the books before taking in the role and i can bet 50 dollars he did not read them during the shooting. On an semi-related topic, I liked this show, but... did anyone else feel Ankh Morpork was a depicted as a bit too... modern? I always imagined it as somewhat more in the classical fantasy realm. But, I guess, it is based on London, and by the time of Going Postal it is going through its own version of the Industrial Revolution, so maybe this was actually a more accurate depiction. It's the same in Game of Thrones. Tywin Lannister is only in his mid 50s and Dance is about a decade older. Still wonderful though.

    A discworld novel I'd really love to see turned into a movie is Night Watch. Only problem is it's a Watch story. The needed budget may be strenuous at times.

    I was really unhappy when they chose someone with light hair, but he was really good and I enjoyed watching this movie. The only inconsistency I found was when he was answering about playing a game sometimes "we already are" that seemed a little bit out of Vetinari's character, not calm and self confident enough. But I guess it was in the script that way, so nothing to complain on his side. Anyway, good job and good movie. Highly recommended.

    @knight1172. I totaly agree. What matters is his ablity to play the role. If he is a good enough actor you ought to be able to forget his hair colour is not right. Or that he is a bit shorter, taller, fatter thiner whatever.

    note to some person who once played a lord vetinari, when I arrive in londonium next week, anyone whos been buying the "expensive s**t instead of doing real scholaring should just confine themselves to their personal lavratories. Harry POTTERs job will seem much easier at times like that. Do make sure ethiopian ping pong club of unsportlyness stay out of interfering with my travelplans, even thinking of it should be considered to have interest for fresh attendances to the piano lesson sessions....

    @knight1172 I agree. i also felt that Orons didn't take the part seriously. Therer seemed a misconstued reference to Monty Pythons life of Brina that didn't work.
    I can't bring myself to enjoy this film though. The cast is brilliant, and the screenplay decent. But the directing, and the setting just feel awkward and unproffesional. Like the last two films it feels to small and enclosed. The music score is trite aswell

    I do think Dance was the best Vetinari yet but I feel like Vetinari as a character is a bit like Sherlock Holmes, always played by actors far older than the actual character.
    We know that Young Sam Vimes was born on the 30th anniversay of the Glorious Revolution. Going Postal is set a couple of years after this, I'd say rough estimate that he's between 4 and 6. During the revolution Vetinari is last year of school (18). Therefore he's only 52-54. Dance is in his mid-60s.

  • @Matrinique
    @Matrinique 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    >.> sigh. I really prefer the way I imagined him. Haven't seen the movie yet because I'm still deciding on whether to read the book first, but what I'm getting from this is a stuffy old man/villain. To me, Vetinari has a contemplative, sharp, quick, but lurking energy. He's not stiffly languid; he's relaxed, but ready to spring. He takes things in stride, he is should seem more pleasant than imposing, but the imposing-ness hangs heavily around him anyway. Idk, maybe it's the anime influences.

    Although I still think, that Jeremy Irons in (Colours of magic) ist the real Vetinary, I must say, that Charles Dance ist the Vize-Patrician, blond or not. And when "PTerry" says, he's ok, so he 's ok for me, too.
    Come on, Charlie, go on and rule!

  • @Trampadoo
    @Trampadoo 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @dayiiv: I guess because dyed hair would have looked artificial, just like Irons' acting was (as much as I like him in other roles) and they didn't want to mess with the realism of Dances acting. Dye his hair and the frist thing you think is.. oh, they dyed the hair of the actor. I'm glad they didn't.
