People vastly underrate Hulk Hogan's reliability and work ethic in the equation. A lot of guys with comparable talent didn’t want to work that kind of schedule.
kerry von erich is often the guy noted as being on vince's radar. but to your point, the wwf champion wrestled 320 days a year all over america, and the world frankly. kerry von erich wasn't even reliable enough to avoid no-shows in the state of texas
Nobody could've replaced him... 1- Dusty was a great promo but didn't have the physique, was much older & didn't embody the 80s like hulk did, most of all he was already interested in making the transition into a management role. 2- windham was great in ring but wasn't a good promo, was too lazy & didn't have the look vince was looking for in a top guy at that time. 3-Luger definitely had the best physique outta all of em,was much younger but at the same time was stiff as a board & didn't have any charisma & his promos were serviceable at best. 4. Kerry had the look, was much younger but unreliable.
@AwesommeSaucee not in any universe was he bigger than Hogan. Especially in 1983 what is what they are talking about. When Vince went National Hogan was the only one who could do it. Period
15:28 old bowling ball cleaner used to have ether in it (no more) and that was used in the wrestling business some wrestlers have said and they had to be careful as it would legit knock opponents out (and has done apparently a few times)
Wrestling back then seemed so realistic and hard hitting. Late 90s to early 2000s also made it look real but I can’t say the same for today’s wrestling. From those weak forearm shots, over use of barely connecting superkicks, to all those thigh slaps and horrible camera zooming in and out. Makes you appreciate guys like Dutch, Bret Hart, Razor, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero mainly during his wcw days.
@ most of my comment was ignored I guess. I can go back and watch a Bret Hart match right now and feel the same thing I felt then and then watch a Jey uso or just about anyone today and not feel a thing. Wrestling then didn’t need the camera to zoom in and out to make a move feel more impactful or hide the lack of. Has nothing to do with age, some wrestlers make it look legit and others are just silly spot seekers. Gunther is the closest thing we have today that resembles what wrestling use to be and why most people agree he is the best today. Story lines are better today but not the match itself.
I'm a fan, but I don't think you could replace Hogan. Just like you can't replace Warrior, Andre the Giant, Bret, Shawn, Austin or Undertaker. Even though they didn't hit the same level as the other; Dusty, Savage, Sid, and Piper are forever legends that will never be replaced.
I can't remember if Jim Cornette advocated using real ether or mocked the use of, but I do know the topic came up with him somewhere in the past. Also, the Jannetty story never fails to make me laugh, weird bastard.
Without Hogan, there wouldn't have been a successful national expansion for the WWF. There's no way Vince would have Dusty's mug plastered on everything from cartoons to lunchboxes. "Dusty Rhodes Rock n' wrestling"? No way, pal.
2:58 I’ve heard recently that Vince McMahon wanted Dusty Rhodes to be his champion before Hulk Hogan and it was because Dusty turned Vince McMahon down that Hulk Hogan got it
There is absolutely no one that could have replaced Hogan. Everyone is either too young to remember or have forgotten that Hogan was already a household name from Rocky 3 before he even eent to Vince. People knew of Thunderlips who looked absolutely massive standing next to Stsllone, and people wanted to see Hogan up close and live. Yesh, you could have pushed Dusty and did okay..... Until Verne or Jim Crockett went on their expansion and strapped a rocket to Hogans back. Then we would be discussing the rise and fall of the WWF right now.
but verne wasn't going to strap the rocket to hulk's back and i've never heard any notion that JCP was even interested in hogan ... hence why hogan jumped ship. verne never put the belt on a non-shoot wrestler. rocky 3 helped propel him to some fame but he was still not regarded as on the level of dusty, flair, etc at that time. Vince just saw it and had the vision
@mox19380 Tell us you have zero clue what you're talking about without telling us. Hogan transcended the business after Rocky 3 came out. He was already bigger than Dusthy Whodes or Flair, two big fish in a small southern pond could ever be. "Verne was never going to strap the rocket on Hogan." Except that he was, and tried to. His downfall was telling Hogan that Hogan had to give him a cut of whatever he made in Japan. Had he not tried screwing Hulk out of money, Hulk would have stayed with the AWA and Vince never happens. As for JCP, of course Jim Crockett was interested and would have made his move. Despite the revisionist history put out by the WWE making Vince McMahon into an idiot savant, JCP began the national expansion before Vince, started the PPV game in pro wrestling and had the vision. Vince was just a rich kid who took everyone else's ideas and got to Hogan first so Hogan could carry his company to the top. Had Vince went with Dusty? Jim Crockett goes and gets Hogan to replace Dusty in the territory, and we would then be sitting here discussing JCP's takeover of the wrestling business and how Vince was just another failed promoter.
@DarknessTriumphs had vince went with dusty...dusty had already turned Vince down Verne was not putting the title on hogan. Evidence he didn't put the belt on him and all subsequent awa champs were in the same mold as they'd always been...shoot workers. Dusty was booking jcp. He had himself and flair as top guys. He never looked at hogan because the territory still wanted classic working wrestlers Hogan transcended wrestling? In 83 rocky was over a year old ... so if he transcended the business what was verne waiting for?
@mox19380 Verne PUT the title on Hogan. Hogan quit the same night because Verne wanted part of his Japan money. This is well established and well known to those of us who actually know what we are talking about. Fail #2 is the BS claim that Dusty was offered Hogan's spot and "turned it down." Never happened and Vince is on record that Dusty was the back up plan had he not been able to get Hogan. Keep making 💩 to craft that little fairytale you have going, kid.
@DarknessTriumphs lord. Hogan won the title as an angle and was stripped of the title before ever defending it. So he was not really champ. Come on you understand how this works. If you call this a title run or gagne putting the title on hogan than so be it. But he "won" the title may 82. Lost it that week and never had the title for the next 16 months before leaving....but sure. Gagne was gonna put the title on him Dusty was not a backup. I never said he was. Dusty was offered a wwf contract in 81. He turned it down.
