  • Having fun seeing how loud a low wattage Kicker comp 15" subwoofer on a 600w RMS Soundstream amplifier can get. Is it true that a setup this weak can hit 150 db? Lets see!

The thing that was more common back during the 80's and 90's was multiple large, high sensitivity (90db+) subs in huge sealed boxes. Not too many bass heads ran single subs back in the day. Giant boxes in minitruck beds and hatchbacks, high sensitivity and massive amounts of cone area. A Punch 150 bridged to 2.66 ohms on six 150w 12's in a box that took up most of a truck bed was common for the day, and would get quite loud. Also Orion XTR dvc subs were rated @ 800w rms and were pretty common. As far as getting your spl measured, local stereo shops usually had an spl meter and would come out and measure it for you if you asked. Having said all that, the modern stuff is better in almost every way, except arguably SQ, and it's definitely a whole lot more affordable.

@@mattstarke7373 Yes it was. In 1993, one of my buddies bought an S10 Blazer demo vehicle from one of our local shops. It had a wall with ten of the old school white logo Punch 18’s in it. Originally, the shop was running them off a Power 1000, but when they sold it to my buddy, they pulled the big amp out and replaced it with one of the new (for the time) Punch 200m’s. Those ten sealed 18’s barely moved, and I could still barely sit in it because it was so loud. I’ve recently had 2 Skar EVL 12’s in the factory ported Skar box in my 2 dr hatchback Focus running off a Skar RP2000.1D, and it couldn’t touch the violent pressure of those ten underpowered 18’s.

I grew up in the 90s. The kicker demo van with 4 18s and a bunch of power for back then did mid 140s. It seemed loud. The power supply van with the 6 sealed 18s was around 150db. Those were some of the loudest. There were a few SPL vans doing 155s. That was the best of the best. Maybe 3-4 vans nationwide. I did what this kicker did with 2 8w6s and 400w in a small hb, and I was common. We all built the same boxes that people are building today, but probably more small round ports. I’m old now and went to Slamology this year and stuff is way louder. The music is different, and you have a lot more bass music to chose from, but it’s overall louder today. You can get a lot more out of fewer speakers because people are sending 10x the power to them and it’s cheap power.

Older Subwoofers: Generally had higher SPL efficiency ratings, often in the range of 86 dB to 91 dB, as they were designed to produce more sound with less power.
Modern Subwoofers: Tend to have slightly lower SPL efficiency ratings, often in the range of 83 dB to 89 dB, due to a shift in design focus towards greater power handling, deeper bass response, and more linearity, which can result in slightly lower efficiency.

  • @bassntruck
    @bassntruck 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

As many have already said. #1 The mics read higher back then. #2 the subs had extremely loose suspensions. That was because of the low power available at the time. This also caused them to want huge (5cf+) boxes to really move or even IB. That is why they had sensitivity ratings in the mid 90s and up. It took very little power to move them and why they had "small" compared to today magnets. While you could burn up a coil then you were much more likely to bottom out the VC or tear the spider when pushing it.

That just sounded like a really nice home theater or home hifi. My Ford Tempo with 6x 12" woofers would pop the glass out of the car I had to reenforce it. A couple of other points to add. Head units were different- Bluetooth didnt exist, we ran either a cassette tape player or CD player of very high quality! I also used many outboard electronic crossover networks, because my amps were stereo/mono bridgeable with little to no built in crossovers like todays amps almost all come standard - trust me active devices made a huge difference! We also spent big money on patch cables & accessories unlike i see many doing today- so i ran esoteric audio by streetwires that were $100 per 20 ft times 3 or 4 runs usually to the trunk, thats not including all the shorty patches 3ft, 6 ft 12 ft etc from electronic xovers to amps inputs or the daisy chain connections needed. $1000 on just cables alone was a big deal and you were judged on quality of accessories. Power wire was only OFC, we didn't have CCA anything for wire! My rcas weighed almost as much as 4 awg OFC and were all copper with turbine split tips. As many others have said ...drivers efficiency was higher also and more... meant louder! Vehicles were also different than todays! Less electronics then meant more space for us to fill up without the dangers of screwing up a can bus network or computer in the way, also vehicle stock wiring was stronger and thicker so conductivity was more true. Body panels werent thin and glued on so better grounds were more common! Head units of great quality had way better built power supplies in them and sound transfer through amp inputs were stronger voltages and high level inputs wasnt really a thing to worry about like today! Ive been doing this since 1986+- and owned some great equipment- I started with Carver and JBL(The real Grand Touring) look up JBL T180's i had 2 of them quad ported in an 89 Mustang LX and lots of mids and highs. Later i got into ADCOM GFA car Amplifiers-with XLR connectors inputs they were cool and different, because you had to solder your own pins depending on configuration in your build. I also jumped into Fosgate later on with the Punch 45/75/150's and then upgraded to the DSM's when they came out on the market 40/60/100/200 and IX(crossover cards in the bottom) version too later on.
Ive had & have Alpine, Sony, Soundstream old & new, ADS, i was an old school ORION dealer, phoenix gold Titanium's, PPI (Precision Power)when they were real, i sold KICKER equipment when the L7 first emerged, so many other brands ive used or installed for clients over 30+ years and never cared about DB numbers...why? because the customers & thier friends would tell you how loud your shit was and meters were just for bragging rights! I used to have people call me on my car phone and they new when my vehicle was coming towards them or thier house because I was shaking the ground they stood or lived on, miles away from me. They were very accurate pinpointing where i was😂 cops werent fans when i was near & many said they thought a UFO or 😂hovercraft was around because of my (2)18" of Techmaster P.E.B. (Bass Computer)of bass or DJ Magic Mike(Feel the Bass)& MC Madness- every car audio shop I went around were either irritated because I wasnt buying from them or I was attracting thier customers out to my ride and believe me i didn't need any SPL meter to score what i had built ;)

In a early 90s Ford Taurus wagon competing in the 500 watt and under a young guy with a single 15 cerwin Vega ( was not from their normal line , it was way heavier than the normal 15 and was right about the time I had first heard of the stroker but it wasn't one although the motor assembly and basket were very similar to the stroker. ) I can't remember the amp but I do remember several months of trial and error tuning and returning and I'm pretty sure he got 143.1 and that was extremely impressive fire a single sub back then ..... 1997 I think it was. And the guys claiming those big numbers probably did get them but there is a problem that answers how they did it. There wasn't a standardised way of how where and with what to take these tests . I remember a guy with a convertible that has a box in the back seat that was a huge "X" that stuck up at least 3 ' over his head. It was 4 12" one in each leg of the X firing to the middle where there was a 10 " circle cut out. So basically it was 4 band pass and the vented ends joined together in the middle forming the X. The rules for the competition for that upcoming event allowed the microphone for the meter to be basically at your port if you wanted . They were cheap ass 12" and the sound out of the box was shit but it did hit high numbers. Back then I remember fights breaking out because a guy would hit 145-146 at one event and the next one ( put on by different people and sponsors they got 132. There for a while it was literally different rules at each sound off. That is where those numbers came from and they did get them but because of discrepancies in test procedures and a verity of meters being used and on top of that calibration of test equipment was often neglected a lot.

I own and run a mobile SPL metering company. The bigger the vehicle you have the more power you have to put into it to get a higher SPL measurement. If you take a stereo system and put it into a small Honda Civic hatchback you will get a higher SPL measurement then you would if you take that exact same stereo system and put it into a SUV you will get a lower measurement with the exact same setup. The smaller the vehicle is the less space you have to pressurize

Not for competing, a lot of variables come into play with overall SPL…… great video though, It’s nice seeing real world examples of what anyone can achieve with just a basic setup

Nice try, but there's not even close to the stuff that was made back in the days.
Still, we had a Renault Twingo (very small car) with a wall containing 8 12's and 3 15's , 8 x 800 watts amplifiers and we could barely brake 154, it wasn't easy with the available stuff but we did allot of R&D to be competitive.

I had an optima redtop under the hood and 2 xs power cells in the back, big 3 upgrade but factory alt. If i did a full precharge on my cells they held decent for a while. I got a 150.3 out of that in my 89 bronco 2 build. The box was 3.25 cubic feet per sub tuned at 34 hertz. It was loud and I was happy. This was in 2002 and that was loud for around my area. Still remember when Bone Crusher with Grippin the Grain came out. The best score came from ying yang twins Alley Album the song was drop like this 2001

Would love to see you try it in a 5cf box tuned to 40Hz. Enclosure sizes, as well as port tuning have gone down over the years. Back in the day 40Hz was like the standard for port tuning. If I remember correctly, it was said that 40Hz is the lowest note on a Bass Guitar, and that's why you never needed to tune lower than that.

Well... this test is bs. Why?
20years ago we didn't have so much power. Amp with 1000W was amazig. And the speakers with more than 500W were not cheap and avaible.
What we do was making the Best box possible for that specified speaker, placed in specified car. One note Wonder box or wide frequency for sq...
Your box is like SUV's of this time. Suiteble for everything so... good in nothing (as we say in poland).
And okok hitting 150dB was unicorn, but hitting high score was so rewarding man...!
And to be honest sq of todays beefy subs is poor, just listen to oldies hits and try to get the base out of them!
Today you play "bass I love you" in the matter of seconds and your whole car is schredding.
    [Sorry for my English]

technology sucked ass back in the day that's why they had high sensitivity subs but low wattage. Plus, there truly were no high wattage amps...again technology wasn't all that. Like everything else, technology has advanced and now they can make high spl subs with high wattage amps. I'm 53 and I love today's car audio much more than back then. Think about it, besides the watt per dollar being so much better today, you can now bass with one 12" medium box and decent sub and get plenty loud. Back then, to get the same loudness you needed two 12's and one huge ass box that took up all your trunk and the costs of this type of setup was ridiculous.

Could be how they metered could be that old subwoofers had different sensitivities could be vehicle could be a lot of variables how extreme was the vehicle that how’s the subwoofer there’s way too many variables you can take cheap subwoofers and put them in an SPL build and they would surprise you i wouldn’t say myth busted on this I’d say inconclusive.
