  • In this video I review Wool and the Gang's Ra-Ra Raffia paper yarn. I personally recommend using this paper yarn for creating simple décor items like baskets or tote bags. I have posted the links to purchase this yarn below, on purchases made through links I may receive a small commission, but this is at no extra cost to you.

WATG absolutely needs to figure out a more user-friendly way to wind this yarn. I am a center-pull person. If their label happens to fall off - actually even if it doesn't fall off - the yarn has a tendency to come undone on the outside of the roll. What I have resigned to is using a to-go container (plastic, cylindrical) as tall as the roll of yarn. I created a small hole in the lid (like with a hot ice pick so edges would be smooth) I put the roll in the container, pull the yarn from the center then through the hold in the lid, secure the lid and work that way. This is the only way I've been able to contain this yarn from going all over the place.

I have a hot mess with my tube of this. I have been trying to unravel the mess for quite awhile. Very very frustrating. It’s far too expensive to just ditch it.

I had no problem with a big yarn bunch. I left it in the center and undid the outside knot. To oull from the outside. Pulling from inside was too twisty. I also don’t think it feels like tissue paper. I love this stuff. It’s so smooth to work with.

I am so glad you like this yarn, it just wasn't for me. What do you make with it?

Were you able to find a way to make it softer? I want to work with raffia bags but don't like the roughness. I feel that won't be good for the clothes and the bag when they rub against each other.

You're not alone in having the raffia cone go awry as soon as the straps are cut. Ravelry comments said the same thing. Another user recommended putting a toilet paper tube in the core before trying to unwind it.

OMG, YES. It is otherwise really nice to work with, but that makes it hell.

I'm not used to it and find it challenging to work with, rough on the hands.

I'm definitely going to try that when I use it next!

It's a nightmare trying to work out how to find the 'start' of the yarn!!!
