Busting The MYTH About Messi & Ronaldo

  • Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are the two greatest footballers of their generation, and among the finest players of all time.
    Between them, they have won the Ballon d'Or 11 times, and still they go on for Barcelona and Juventus as arguably the two best players on Earth at the ages of 32 and 35 respectively.
    Many of the discussions regarding Messi and Ronaldo frame the Argentine as some kind of born genius, and Ronaldo as a manufactured machine and athlete whose prowess is born out of a sheer willingness and desire.
    I think that's a bit misleading, so in this video, HITC Sevens busts the myth surrounding Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo and their routes to football / soccer greatness.

    Apparently Ronaldo’s decline in free kicks had something to do with his tendonitis in his standing knee that he suffered in 2014, interestingly his decline in his ability with free kicks did start to happen from 2014 onwards I feel. Not sure if this is the reason but it’s a possibility.

    Unrelated to this video, but there’s a school of thought out there among younger fans that great players from years gone by wouldn’t make it in the modern game, and that for this reason they shouldn’t be included in all time ranking lists. If there’s a video you could make on this topic and how silly it is to include as an argument in the all time debate, that would be fantastic. For example, saying Johan Cruyff wouldn’t make it today so he shouldn’t be in the top 10 of all time is ludicrous, yet I have heard this on more than one occasion, so I feel it needs to be addressed. Great video once again though Alfie.

    I have just recently subscribed, so I missed this video the first time around. I want to first compliment you on an excellent channel and then say I totally agree with your assessment. Being a 60 year old American who was raised in Austria for much of his formative years, I have had the privilege of watching some of the great generational talents. From Pele, at the end of his career, to Messi and Ronaldo. For half of my life I had the immature attitude that one needed to choose a favorite player. As crazy as it sounds, I was unable to appreciate Johan Cruyff at the time because I believed Franz Beckenbauer to be superior. As I grew older, I realized that watching a gifted footballer was such a treat that I could appreciate artistry and respect skill while still preferring (for whatever reason) a particular player. While discussions about Mueller v. Lewandowski, Kahn v. Neuer (can you tell I’m a Bayern fan), R9 v R7, and the like may be great Pub argument fodder, it does not take away from the fact that we, in the last 50 years have seen some amazing football talent. I also want to commend you on pointing out at the end of the video why I believe Messi and R7 can be singled out as all time greats. That is the fact that both adapted to team needs and still thrived. Ronaldo’s increase focus on goal scoring was, in my opinion, a team based decision. The same can be said for Messi’s move back is due to the team’s need for playmaking. Thanks for advocating a cessation of the insane argument over who is better and encourage everyone to simply enjoy the gift that is Lionel Messi and Christiano Renaldo. Keep up the good work.

    I always thought it was insanely stupid when people would say Cristiano worked hard and Messi relied on natural talent and they equalled each other out as a result of that. You need both talent and hard work to be a top footballer especially with the level of consistency that these two have shown. That being said Messi possesses certain qualities that you cannot train for no matter how hard you train. Its just innate and with his hard work its been enhanced.

    Im sorry but Cristiano Ronaldo could have turned out like Nani if he didnt build himself up.He may have be talented but i dont think he is rare its just that he crafted his abilities beyond. They are literally several superstar players who have the same playing profile as him - Kylian, Perisic, Son, Rashford and Aubameyang just to name a few. Sure Messi works hard but lets all just admit that his ball control is just a natural talent, it cannot be replicated hence that out right gave him a great advantage from the get go. If Jadon Sancho had his touch id say he's the closest thing to a Messi, Phillip Coutinho too but they just dont come in anyway close, Neymar hate him or love him is the only one we can make a case for.

  • @MANUTD4LIFE171

    Completely agree with everything you say.
    All you have to do is look at the careers of Ronaldinho and Kaka to see where amazing talent alone gets you. Both over the hill by 26-27.
    It’s impossible to be a top player as you approach and pass 30, if you don’t do the right things off the field.

  • @Hiigara85
    @Hiigara85 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Thank you for the great video. While i prefer Ronaldo over Messi i would never go with a simple machine over natural talent argument or say one is simply better than the other. I would argue that they are two completely different footballers. Messi is much shorter than Ronaldo (20cm), that gives him a much lower centre of gravity, and also encourages a style of play that favours close control of the ball, and make no mistake his touch is godlike! While Ronaldo was more of a flying winger, with plenty of flare and tricks. Just look at how they run with the ball, Messi will have many shorter touches and Ronaldo will take fewer but longer touches. Also Ronaldos decline in form compared to Messi is natural given he is (at the time of writing) 35 years old and Messi is 32 (there is an about 2.3 years difference). No matter how well you train, you cant defeat time and aging. You can only delay the inevitable. There is no doubt both work hard and have insane ethics to how they approach there craft. Just be happy we got to enjoy the most incredible professional rivalry in football history! odds are it wont hapen again, atleast in our lifetime anyway...

    • The Difference between the two Completely different yet Best Players of this Era .
    On Record, Ronaldo is Better Performer than Messi Due to his Individual , Club and Country Trophies and his Career Figures Achievements with Performing on Big Stage as a Descisive Player . But Messi is Better Footballer and a Game Changer who can almost play at Any position and Still can Influence the Team and Control the tempo of the Game.. and if Messi Could have Played for only Records then his Overall Career Statistics and Numbers Would have been Much Higher than He already has now .
    Ronaldo is better Performer and Messi is Better Footballer . Both are Legends. But Messi Holds More Watchable Credibility and did some things on pitch which we have never seen before and probably never will be, and that's what gave Messi an edge over Ronaldo, because football is not only about Goals or Winning Matches but Football is Beyond Statistics and Numbers, which something can't be Describe by words because it's a Joy and Emotions, which Messi Gave More Jaw Dropping Magical Moments than any footballer of his Generation .
    Ronaldo's Game is Limited towards Goals and his personal Mile stones with not Holding Much Excitement or Watchable Credibilities where Messi's Game Play is About Joy , Happiness and Emotions and Can't Be Expressed by Words and Something which can't be Measured by Statistics or Trophies because Whenever he does Something impossible stuff on the pitch then you just Spellbound by his Magic and You Completely in Awe of him . Ronaldo has Never Did This kind of impossible stuff on pitch and He has No Beauty in his Game and Ronaldo has Passion and Winning Mentality but his Lack Sportsmanship on pitch Combined Cheating , Diving , Punching and Acting has Heavily Ruin his Image and Respect of as a Sports Person Because only Ronaldo fans Claimed him as a Leader but Leader Never Dive and Fake Cry.
    So Ronaldo is only Limited Towards a Football Where Messi is The Football .
    Ronaldo is More Successful and Scores Lots of Goals with Having More Impact on Big Match Situations. But everything is Can't be Judge by Just Goals or Winning and Loosing, because Football is Beyond Statistics and Numbers and it also About Joy , Emotions and Entertainment.. Which no other footballer has Given and Produce BreathTaking Magic and Jaw Dropping Moments in this Generation than Lionel Messi..
    and in Simple Words.. Messi Plays Better Football than Ronaldo. Messi is About Natural , All Round , Beautiful and Complete Football with having Great Career Statistics and Individual Achivements by his side too, and that what makes Messi a Better Than Ronaldo .
    And Hard work , Determination and Winning Attitude is very Important Ingredients which Ronaldo has, but it's not the Higher Priorities While Judging him with Messi's Gifted and Talented Attributes because Ronaldo has to Work on his Craft in order to reaching towards Messi's Level where Messi is Born Genius.
    So In Ranking List, as a Overall Footballer.. Both Messi and Ronaldo are Equally Deserving At Same Spot while Debating on who is the Best. But Messi is More Suitable for as to Put him Higher in an All Time Great List ahead of Ronaldo because Something can't be Explain by Maths or Theories , and for that You have to Go by Your instincts or you just have to watch both of them play and Figure it out Yourself by Simply Observation, and then judge & Rate them as per Your Level of Perception and Understanding about Football .

    How many other eras like this have there been? Where we’ve had two this good playing at the same time? Pele and Di Stefano from the late 50’s to mid 60’s when Age caught up with Di stefano. Maybe Maradona and Platini in the 80’s, but Platini’s peak ended when Maradona’s began. What I’m saying is, Messi and Ronaldo being as good as they’ve for as long as they’ve been at the same time isn’t even once in a generation, for so many it’s once in a life time.

  • @unstoppableExodia

    This video is a clear reminder that in every generation and every age group there are many young talents that could honestly be described as possessing potential to be special. But not all get to carry that through into the professional stage as a senior player. Fewer still at elite clubs in the strongest leagues. And then amongst those only a select few get to be among the ballon dor top 5 and then to be one of the two that dominates the best footballer of the year award for a decade is a further step above that. Both Messi and cr7naldo were football prodigies in their youth days and they both kept working hard and improving and shone brighter than the rest of their generation. Messi had the good starting his professional at an elite club that was being reformed to make proper use of its academy's burgeoning golden generation of which Messi became the undisputed jewel in the crown when Pep Guardiola elevated the club's stature into the stratosphere. cr7naldo worked his way up rapidly from sporting to mufc to real mad.rid. An impressive rise even though mufc and real are rivals of teams I am fans of which made it alll the more easier to be a fan of Messi over cr7naldo. I'm not blind to cr7naldo's ability and achievements but Messi has always impressed me more with his overall play.

    @momotheone9700 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The injury to ronaldo knee and ankle was the reason for cr7's drop in freekick conversion rate and accuracy and its also the reason for his lack of beating players as often as he used to do in his early to late 20s, its part of the reason he look kinda off on the 2014 world cup as well, its not ronaldo alone who had horrendous knee injuries and see part of his game fall flat where he has to work to bring them back up, after roberto baggio won his ballon d'or he suffered a ruptured knee and a torn acl, after which he stated that he had to dribble in a straight line for a long time because everytime he made a turn or change direction, he felt his career would end, he still manage to came back in 94 and carry italy to finals in USA only losing in penalty to brazil, or lets not forget fernando torres in 2009-10 getting a knee injury which took away his pace and explosiveness he once had, even though he was a bit slower after, he still went to euros and scored multiple times and played the world cuo winning with spain, point is knee injuries are some of the worst in all football and it generally slows down or wipes out an aspect of a players game depending on severity of it, now neymar got 2 wicked horrible ankle injury and a back one that set him out for like 6 months, but he was still brilliant and had everything he had before, yet neymar is fragile as a glass cup, meanwhile the machine physical specimen that Cr7 is, got one knee injury and had to ignore a whole aspect of his game to be more efficient, thats just how football is, ofcourse every now and then Cr7 provide breath taking dribbles and wicked skills and score great freekicks.

    Weirdly my most prominent memory of a Ronaldo goal (like literally the only one I can remember) is only because of Dimitar Berbatov. Actually I cant even remember the goal it self, just what Dimi did. THAT was the best piece of football I've ever seen and we even used the gif of Berbatovs move as the Logo for our band on our homepage. If you dojn't know the goal I'm talking about, google ManU berbatov Ronaldo goal or the greatest assist or something like that. It's like Pele, Maradonna, Michael Jordan, Jimi Hendrix, Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna, Beckenbauer, Beethoven, every single eagle, wolf and lion gave their spirit and power to Berbatov. It was magic.
    (On the other side the most prominent Messi goal I remember is that Maradonna goal he scored, but I could at least name some.)

    One of the best videos about both. The much I seem like bashing them dominating football, I simply have watched their growing up. The question is that so many players just as talented and determined as them fell more off the radar. Who will remember Thomas Müller in 2040? Who will remember Franck Ribery? Who will remember Virgil van Dijk? Who will remember Gianluigi Buffon? I don't think Andrés Iniesta would face such a fate, he scored the winning goal in a world final, but still... I hoped their dominance ends as soon as possible because there are so many other players and teams. Oh, and fans of them always whine like it's been the end of the world once their teams are relegated! That's so pathetic and that's why I hate Barca in particular. And Real Madrid too. I just see them. I say "good game" once the team loses and the man answers "I don't wanna talk about it."

    Messi is a sensational player. His run from early 2009 till 2015 was crazy. Ronaldo was a showman and an excellent player at United from 2006 till 2009. Ronaldo however started changing his game in 2013 into the psychotic box player he’s become now. Ronaldo for me edges it simply down to the fact that he’s been able to change his game so significantly and with the change to a naturally defensive league in Serie A and an albeit hugely successful and dominant club in Juventus, he’s still putting out great numbers for someone who was deemed as ‘finished’ by unintelligent people in 2017. Ronaldo in the Champions League is monstrous all throughout and his performances have rarely dipped in that competition since 2013. Messi however has failed to replicate his earlier form in the latter stages in the UCL since 2015 and has looked especially hapless in 2018 and 2019 in the UCL. GOATs nonetheless and whether you feel Messi is the best or Ronaldo is the best, go for it. Ronaldo’s free kicks though, I’ll never be able to figure out what happened to his consistency...
