- SO many swimmers make this common mistake! ❌️ Not only does entering with your thumb set you up for a weak catch, it also turns your shoulder inward, which adds unnecessary strain and can lead to injury 😩 #swimming #shorts

the problem I see is his right elbow in the water.
Ikr i think its justvrefraction and hes actuañy doing EVF😂
Nope. That is low elbow.
Entering with the pinky makes your elbow drop. Thumb and index finger first keeps the elbow up and out of the water where it needs to be for speed.
I have tried to work on this since first seeing the video. It's working well, because with the body rotation it makes it really easy to bend my arm during the recovery then find the entry easier. I still forget sometimes, especially when trying to sprint, but if I focus on it my sprinting feels more in control rather than a bit wild or thrashing. It hasn't made a huge difference to my pace yet, but it definitely makes holding the same pace feel easier.
the more important issue is his right arm pulling too early and crossing his midline.
I find if i rotate my shoulder to enter thumb first the body rotation corrects it to ring finger. Focusing on the end of the muscle chain seems wrong to me. I would focus on the body rotation and connecting through the body.
Im gonna have to compare this, I feel like with my tumb first, helps me to wip my kick better, but right know that im doing it on the air I can see my elbow pointing up and making my posture wider in comparison with ring finger first 👍🏼👍🏼
The issue is entering on your thumb doesn’t set you up for the catch without drag. As well it creates internal rotation of your arm which is bad for your shoulder.
It is always pleasure to watch your videos and learn something new!

He’s wrong . I was taught thumb and index finger enter first to not entrain air with the stroke .
He’s not wrong. Entering on the thumb creates internal rotation of the shoulder. Which can create stress and pressure in your shoulder. As well the drag created to align your hand correctly to start the catch.
True. I had months of PT to repair damage to my shoulder due to thumb first entry.
This is all habit. It takes a month to charge a habit. Try it. Your shoulders will thank you.
Literally will do nothing to improve anything. Yay
My father taught me when I was a little girl to keep my fingers closed together when I'm swimming
this is actually a pretty highly debated topic, but its generally recommended for you to keep your fingers naturally open, not expanded, for less resistance and a larger surface area to minimize loss of endurance
How you enter with the ring finger? 😆🙈 really serious ? Thanks
Flatten your hand. You can rotate your hand 360°. Try aiming index finger first. It actually feels better and isn't damaging to your shoulder like thumb first is.

I’m getting a 16 as a 13 year old high school swimmer for 25m, and this guy having never sw is getting a 15.7
This is bullshit. It doesn’t matter. The hand can enter flat if needed. The more important thing is the point of entry.
Naturally ❤
Love this. I say the same thing! ❤
That is a great adivce 😍
I try to put my middle finger first. Is that fine?
Yes👌
Swimming is all about doing the little things right lol
I think a better way to think about this is ensuring you have rotation on both sides of your body when you take a stroke. The bigger thing here and like other ppl have pointed out is the catch with the right arm (the actual part of the stroke). If you fix that, you can rotate easier to the left side, thereby letting your “ring” finger or outer side of your left hand catch first.
Yeah... Gimmee a break!
Wait so how is your hand supposed to look? Is your ring finger supposed to be bent down?
Tilt your hand so the ring finger enters first. He's briefly showing it after shaking his ring finger.
The ring finger stays in alignment with the other fingers. I think this means that the hand is rotated so the ring finger and little finger are a bit lower than the middle finger. Not rotated so much that the little finger clearly enters first, but if you tried doing that you'd probably drop your elbow.
Is amazing how the position of the finger can change the whole stroke and body position, I also change the angle of my hand and the sequence of my stroke depending on the waves
It’s the most natural way to enter with the least drag and the proper set up for the catch.
