The crew of the Valiant was searching the data banks on anything that had to do with ESP. this sounds so normal today when we can search the net for any information we want, however this show was shot in the mid 60's when no one had personal computer nor I- phones and the only way to get information on any subject was to go look in the library of search through your set of encyclopedia books.
THE MENAGERIE used THE CAGE very well. It allowed the show to save money and conversely added production value to make it look like they had spent much more money than usual. The first time you see it you're like... wow, they built a whole new bridge, hired a new crew and captain and new sets. Later, it was revealed that it was the preexisting pilot... and the bubble was burst.
Fun to compare the changes to sets,props,wardrobe from this second pilot & the weekly series.I liked the improvements.The phaser pistol is a sharper looking design than the laser guns in this pilot.They also created a better looking communicator for the regular show,as well as better looking shirts for the male cast members.
SciFi had Star Trek for a while and did tons of interviews with, not just the stars but all the extras. They were great! I spoke to a guy once who worked on these and said there was so much extra footage that still hasn't been seen. When there's money to be made I don't see why they don't put them all out.
Kelso is killed and Sulu is moved from science to helmsman. Mitchell was not only the navigator, but the defacto first officer. When he is killed, Spock has to double as first officer and science officer. They should have killed off the doctor to make room for Deforest Kelley.

I was young but very impressed by the menagerie.
I always thought Gary Lockwood was acting in the Shatner style in this episode.

According to "The Star Trek Compendium" the laser rifle was only used in this one episode. No reason is given, but it did look rather dorky.

This episode always confused me, Did Gary become corrupt because of the power or did the power take him over? Maybe it's the same thing?
It probably didn't hurt nichelle's was sharing Roddenberry's bed. He was known for those types of antics. Though she was great in that role.

Actually Mitchell was the helmsman. The positions were switched on the console.
The Man Trap was a terrible episode, very awkward.
