Dick Cavett has been nominated for eleven Emmy awards (the most recent in 2012 for the HBO special, Mel Brooks and Dick Cavett Together Again), and won three. Spanning five decades, Dick Cavett’s television career has defined excellence in the interview format. He started at ABC in 1968, and also enjoyed success on PBS, USA, and CNBC.
His most recent television successes were the September 2014 PBS special, Dick Cavett’s Watergate, followed April 2015 by Dick Cavett’s Vietnam. He has appeared in movies, tv specials, tv commercials, and several Broadway plays. He starred in an off-Broadway production ofHellman v. McCarthy in 2014 and reprised the role at Theatre 40 in LA February 2015.
Cavett has published four books beginning with Cavett (1974) and Eye on Cavett (1983), co-authored with Christopher Porterfield. His two recent books -- Talk Show: Confrontations, Pointed Commentary, and Off-Screen Secrets (2010) and Brief Encounters: Conversations, Magic moments, and Assorted Hijinks(October 2014) are both collections of his online opinion column, written for The New York Times since 2007. Additionally, he has written for The New Yorker, TV Guide, Vanity Fair, and elsewhere.

I met him when i was a young studio engineer back; the 70s . What a great guy . Totally exactly the same as you see him on tv . No diva no star attitude and while i was an assistant he made me a cup of tea . Serious class .

I could listen to Roger Moore for hours - witty, charming, great voice. A master of self-irony and ease
I remember seeing him pick up his youngest child every afternoon from our school in Nice. He was still James Bond at the time.
Roger Moore had two character traits that most modern Hollywood types don't have: Class and Humility.
Don't forget talent, too.

Apparently RM always found time for his fans. If you met him he would not mind if you wanted his autograph or wanted to be photographed with him. He was very grounded.

I was lucky to see Sir Roger on stage in Harrogate for one of those 'Evening with' shows a year or two before he died. He was sharp as a tack. Charming and funny. legend.
BRILLIANT! His rapid wit is so stellar it even outshines his good looks and charisma. A very interesting conversation. He and Dick Cavett had such marvellous rapport.

So glad i got to see him in person a few years before he died, he did a talking tour in the UK which was brilliant, brilliant racontuer.... one of the last true English gentlemen.

Roger Moore had just the most acceptable, likeable voice. It's as though it's the perfect timbre, clear, not too posh. And to think he's actually a cockney. I don't blame him for affecting an RP accent. You've got to know what it takes to get ahead. Michael Caine changed his name, but not his accent, but I don't think both approaches take effort.

Oh yes, very well said. I would say the same. Moore was too nice to be as convincing as Connery as the character, but as an actor and man Moore was the more charming and approachable.

It's great seeing these old interviews with Roger Moore.
He says that he's 44 years years old so that would make this show 1971 or early 72. At least a year before he would play James Bond in 'Live and Let Die'
Correct. March 8th ‘72 was the air date according to the info.
Roger was always such a class act. Still miss him alot.

Definitely not 1977 - not with that long hair. He cut it short for his first Bond-movie in 1973 and he kept it short ever since.

6 years after this interview he moved to Switzerland ( probably for tax reasons ) where he remained for the rest of his life ! That's what he was referring to when he said he goes to work then comes home and counts his money R.I.P. ❤🙏

Grant was classy too ,he was offered the bond role,but didn't want to do a series & be type cast,like Roger so smooth,Roger was such a likeable guy though,never saw him in a bad interview and never heard anyone speak ill of him,like David Niven.
Australian schools are very similar to British schools.

I know the producers asked him to cut his hair and lose weight for Bond, but I loved his "fuller" shaggy hair look.
I think God broke the mould when he made Roger.....
I can't find anything substantial on the film he mentions at 3:40; "Getting Rid of Mr Straker". Maybe it didn't get made.
It was also supposed to feature Lee Remick and Orson Welles, you're right it never got made.

What a gent Moore was and what a prat Cavert was . How did he ever get a job as n interviewer?
Cavett became one of the all time great interviewers on TV ever. He got numerous Stars and celebrities to sit down and open up about their lives. His old shows are a gold mine. But he didn't find his footing on this one. Roger clearly had the edge on him and was using his show to promote Faberge and Brute Production's. But it still is a good revealing interview. That's Cavett's trademark.
Unfortunately, Cavett doesn't quite get Moore and the chat never gets to flow naturally. A pity because Moore was an excellent raconteur.

I’ve heard that Dick Cavett has English ancestry by way of Grandparents, and I tend to hear a slight accent when talks or phrases a question
I knew he had a production company but had no idea he produced 'Nightwatch' and 'A Touch of Class' - both were hugely successful. Despite his looks, he was actually super-smart and a high-achiever. During WW2 he was a base commander in Germany. He also owned a third of the rights to 'The Saint' and completely owned the rights to The Persuaders.
Roger was my favorite Bond character. And a smart accomplished guy. But this interview was early March 1972. And he said he was 44 years old. That means he was likely born in 1927. Which would make him 18 when WWII ended. So even if the Nazi's hadn't objected I find it hard to believe he could have been a Base Commander in Germany during the war.

when I was an inner city high school teacher in the mid-1980s I never understood why my teen male students were so wildly attracted to The Man With The Golden Gun out of all the Bonds. I was also a high schooler when I saw it originally in 1974 and didn't find it that special, although the fun house and Christopher Lee's Scaramanga were pretty boss.

Cavett did many excellent interviews, but sometimes he could be obnoxious which is the case here.

Watching him in the Bond movies you don't realize what a big guy he was. Every bit of 6'2 200lbs.
He slimmed down quite a bit to play Bond.
