- Netflix has taken binge watching to a new level with its new original series 'Altered Carbon.'
One of the stars of the series, Dichen Lachman, sat down with us at the Wrap, answering for us the burning of question of just how exactly she managed to pull of Altered Carbon's naked sword-fighting scene.
Dichen Lachman also gets into what it was like to play the role and the power of being a woman on this film. What challenges did the naked sword-fighting scene have that she didn't expect, and does she think the show is too violent?

Oh my god, Dichen was such an awesome villain. I loved her progression from loyal sister to madwoman who still loved her brother to obsession. I also commend her on her courage to throw out our social hangups and pull off a naked fight scene like that. Of course she's gorgeous but I was enthralled with her performance and courage. Loved this series and wish I would have read the book!!!
Solovino Juntoseva yea i dont really get the sex appeal in that fight, i saw more of a vulnerability and desensitisation of her to sexuality, such a fantastic cerebral show, i wish they had spent more time on side stories and the lives around each planet tbh, the morality of these new worlds and the things in them are some of the best parts of this genre
Yeah, much like Ghost in the Shell, nudity is not sexualised in this. It's used to convey other ideas.

Love Dichen Lachman. She's always awesome when she shows up in a show, but sadly she usually disappears pretty fast. Great to see her get a big part in Altered Carbon.
Her swords skills definitely steal the show.

Dichen is a cinematic treasure. She steals the scene every time she's on screen. I'd love to see her in more stuff. We need to find a good role for her in the MCU!

You must have watched another program as what I saw was one that was totally flawed with stupid inconsistencies and ridiculously thought out plot ideas!! Great idea really badly handled !!

This is one of the most articulate interview answer I've seen when an actress speaks of a naked scene she agreed to perform. She seems like a strong person with head on her shoulders, mature enough to know exactly what she's doing and how to address it. I watch the whole season and enjoyed the plot and the futurist psychological conversation. But I must say that there's quite a latent paradox between the messages (she hints at) and the visual action. As Dichen Lachman mentioned there are obvious modern themes on women abuse and social inequality in the series. But at the same time there's still this constant glorification of weapons and sex through out the series. I'm not chocked by nakedness on the screen. I actually applaud the series and actors for going for it, and still get some male nudity at a similar level to the women. At a lot of the nudity ties in very well with the futurist plot where the body as become less important due to the mind transfer tech. In other words seeing a naked body has become trivial (in the plot). But it's still predominantly women oriented nudity and at times it's detached from that perspective for good old erotic appeal. It's also hard to speak about women abuse and continue to glorify guns and swords at the same time to that extent. A lot of action scenes are just violent for the sake of the action. It seems 2017 was filled with the rise of conversions on violence and women inequality. And at the same time series like such are still leveraging a good part of the entertainment through the use of guns and sexual connotation. It will be interesting to see how all will resolve itself...
First time I notice Dichen Lachman was in the 100, and I loved her portrail of that character. I was glad to see that she also was casted for Altered Carbon. I just finished watching the season and loved her performance in this as well. I love her acting and look forward to seeing her in the future shows. Great job Dichen.

From her IMDB bio: Dichen Lachman was born in Kathmandu, Nepal, to a Tibetan mother and Australian father. Until the age of seven, she lived in Kathmandu with her parents and extended family. Following that, she moved to Adelaide, Australia, with her parents.

Aside from all the nudity (in its own right amazing), the story was incredible. The sword scene plays so much into her characters determination and ferocity. The entire cast portrayed their characters to a tee. I absolutely loved her and her brother in this series.
Nudity is part of humanity and here it was a great part of the story and was used always so intentionally and meticulously that it added to the story so much.

Her character felt like a weird mashup of some of her previous roles. Sierra from the Dollhouse and the Inhuman immortal lady from Agents of SHIELD.

Lachman is an amazing talent. She rocked her role in Dollhouse, which is where I first saw her perform. When I saw the fight scene in AC I could only be more impressed. Later I wished I could've been a bug on the wall when she initially read the script - "I gotta do WHAT?" Anyway, best wishes Ms. Lachman for your continued success. Hope to see you in more roles soon.
I was very impressed with the scene, and Dichen Lachman had every right to be confident in it.. but one thing I can't stop thinking about: how in the world did Rei not *destroy* Ortega? Surely sleeve sickness couldn't be the culprit, given that we never saw her betray any signs of weakness, other than limiting her more acrobatic maneuvers (i.e. Fight Dome).
Ortega only has limited law enforcement-level combat training and only her limited career's worth of practical field experience, no combat augs or stims (save for the top of the line synth arm which she understandably was inexperienced in using by this point), and was facing off against a centuries old Yakuza / Envoy / Meth who most assuredly had top of the line cloning, not to mention all of those long years of getting her hands dirty. I'm honestly very surprised even Tak could eventually get the better of her in the Ryker sleeve, given how both he and Ortega got rolled over by Dimi 2 body hopping into Tak's superior previous sleeve.
As proven by when she became the little girl, I don't think wanted to kill her, she just wanted to capture her to coerce Kovacs into 'joining' her.
Yeah sure, but why toy with her for so long and, more importantly, why let her destroy so many of her assets? She even made a point of how furious she was about how much Ortega cost her.
Ortega had a gun. She didn't. Combat training or not, she was still outgunned.
In the book, Tak fights her while wearing a bleeding edge "Tech ninja" sleeve, since Ryker's sleeve would be easily identified while sneaking into her operation, but yeah, also because he can get on Kawahara's martial level a lot better in something that isn't tough-but-beaten-up-middle-aged-cop :P
This makes a lot more sense when figuring Tak vs Rei, and as I understand it the book explains a lot of stuff like that much better (even though the sex scenes weren't too great). I don't know that they really did a good job explaining just how important the quality of, and hardware installed in sleeves is. At best, we got a mention during Tak's debrief with the prison warden who mentioned he had some combat augs, but the sleeve itself isn't the best. Notice how dismissive Rei was of the Ryker sleeve and was in such a hurry to get him into something more appropriate for Tak's skills.
Think Rei would have turned out much better if they went with how she was in the novel.
Her introduction fight was awesome, her character's motivations were cool too. If people like this story they should check out Defcon 4.

The two things I've seen her in,Animal Kingdom and Altered Carbon,have been well worth my time to see. Dichen has also been very entertaining and I hope to see her in many more action series and movies!

I like Dichen Lachman, and I think she is great playing a villan. Sadly, I agree on some comments, her characters dies to fast. Thankly, this time in Altered Carbon Rey was actually the whole time "in the corner". I haven't read the novel, don't want to, because I like the changes for the show to the characters and storyplots way better. So, I hope, we got the chance to see the "original" Rey again.
Also I liked how she portrayed Rey. At first you might think, "yay, brother-sister reunion", but shortly after "man, she's completly f***d up. Run Takeshi, run!" She nailed it! As for the clone chamber scene, I acutally was more impressed, how she kicked arse, than the fact, that she was naked the entire time.

Death By Lego I loved her character from the 100 Anya was so cool and though she was semi evil she still had a heart and she cared about her people as CLEARLY SHOWN when she kidnapped Clarke and finn because tris (a little girl from her people) was dying and she didn’t want that little girl to die she has a heart and it was so sad and made me so mad about how they killed her off in the 100. ANYA. DESERVES. BETTER.

Great performances. Great characters. Great show. I know Dichen probably won't be back except in flashbacks, but she helped make this show so engrossing. Such a flawed character with so much strength. Truly an enjoyable villain.

So many great episodes and amazing scenes throughout season 1. I didn't see the scene as anything worth mentioning about that epic sword fight.
If asked several years ago if I would be distracted by seeing that exotic actress/model from the show Doll House, certainly yes. It didn't though, I think because I was caught up in the story and how it was unfolding.
I think the show was awesome. Was really sorry to see it not renewed. Many great issues relevant to the issues of inequality of our day.

@ the first immortal humans will likely be wealthy. The rich are always the beta adopters. Which is great, they pay the high initial costs of everything from cell phones to health care. The money they pay for the privilege of being first funds the R&D that brings cell phones and MRIs to the unwashed masses.
