  • Here is a quick and simple way to make Soil Blocks for starting your seeds in the spring.
    Any plastic bottle should work, just be sure that it's clean and has no chemical residue that might hurt your young plants. None of the measurements are critical, just use whatever you have on hand.

    Omg,,,I am so trying this. I am a 70 year old backyard gardener, so didn't want to spend a lot on investment of soil blocking.

    I took a couple of Wooden Banister Rails from the trash in our alley. They have 1" x 1" on each end. I'm going to try this. I need to up pot some broadcast Petunias! And this will be a great space saving tool. Thank you so much!

    Or simply do as I have done; Cut a toilet paper roll in half then pack with soil, plant seed. Place around 15 or so in an ice cream bucket and fill with half an inch of water each day. When seeds start to sprout simply push the growing seed into your pot or grow bag. Works every time.

    • @thatsnotabadidea6207

      @@thatsnotabadidea6207 Obviously paper towel rolls are the same just longer, I save at least one roll from our foil which is smaller in diameter as a pusher.

    I have seen a lot of talk of soil blocks and wanted to try it out but they are so expensive. Thank you for providing an easy diy on creating a soil block maker. I imagine watering can break the block apart if the soil consistency isn’t ideal. Would you mind sharing your soil mix recipe please?

    • @thatsnotabadidea6207
      @thatsnotabadidea6207  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't really have a soil recipe. I just use potting soil. However the newspaper keeps it all together. And can just be planted in the ground.

    Nice execution but are these blocks permanent? So, would the plants need translplanting to another bigger block or are they permanent in there up to the point of moving them in your garden?

    • @thatsnotabadidea6207
      @thatsnotabadidea6207  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on the plant, but for the most part, we just plant them as is, the newspaper dissolves away and the roots can push through. Or you could take the newspaper off to transplant.

  • @covidvirus2810
    @covidvirus2810 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Isn't the benefit of soil blocking to allow roots to die off as they reach oxygen to create stronger root ball.. meaning why wrap in newspaper?

    For small seeds do you sow 1 seed per pod? I was holding them between my fingers and at times 2 to 3 seeds ended up in 1 pod. 😬 I left them since i could not see them and covered with soil. About 80% of what I planted has germinated but I am too new at this to tell if 1 or 2 seeds (per pod) germinated. In the case it was the 2 is it OK to leave as?
    ...lear.ning as I go. 🌱
    Any suggestions / tips are much appreciated

    • @nicholerichardson5336
      @nicholerichardson5336 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most ppl put 2-3 seeds in a block and once they germinate and grow for a few weeks they choose the strongest one and cut it pull the others out. Other wise they compete and none will be healthy and strong.

    Why not just make " meatball" sized blocks by hand and dimple them with your pinky? No materials but you and soil. Make them small enough to fit inside paper toilet roll holders cut to 1-2".
