      Yes, cammy tries, but it's *his* CHANNEL, in *his* country, he shouldn't *have* to!
      We're the guests in *his* home! Personally,I don't find his accent that difficult. Never particularly noticed it until he began apologizing for it.😘😎🙄which, being his own channel, he definitely should *not have to do!* Its rather RUDE of anyone to complain to a host that they're difficult to understand (bet they wouldn't if the host was offering cookies..er biscuits)IMO.🤷‍♀️🤷‍♂️💞Then again, I'm Canadian, perhaps I was just raised with better manners?
      Beginning to seem like it lately...😘

    Watching from just north of Los Angeles. I’m fascinated by the different breeds. Incredible prices, but breeding the finest examples is best for maintaining the breed. Thanks for including the little sheep wrangler. He sure knew what he was doing. Do you have plans to teach your son to do the same?

It's nice that you're conscientious about whether your videos and their presentation are of interest, but they most definitely are! It's almost like being there in person, which is quite a kick from all the way over in the old US! Thanks so much, Cammy! 🐏🐑

  • @elizabethclaiborne6461
    @elizabethclaiborne6461 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    That was great! The US version is likely the Keeneland Yearling Sale, in Lexington Kentucky. It’s racehorses, but still the same. And the big prices come from the stud books, not the actual animal. Buyers are placing bets that an animal performs well enough to justify that huge price. It’s bloodlines inform that bet, this is how you get a £60.000 ram.
    And it’s kind of a Ferrari for sheep fans or horse racing people to buy a prestige animal… Farmers is farmers. 😁

      I did the opposite started with Cammy's channel then watched Sandi's. Definitely prefer the grass raised best life for sheep over the commercially raised housed sheep.. but for Sandi's situation where she is and the fact that her husband is a grain farmer.. makes sense what she does. I personally don't like to see animals housed so close together, never getting to breathe fresh air or eat real grass. Sandi is an amazing woman though and such a hard worker. I have learned a lot of stuff from her channel as well.

    So my jaw dropped with the amounts being bid on these rams. And being the sheep novice that I am what happens if these rams are "shooting blanks?" Or is there documentation that they are stud material prior to the auction? I hope this isn't a silly question 😅!

      Here in the US, these prices are not as high, and cattle are a bigger deal that sheep. However, when one of the animal is sold at these prices you can rest assured that these boys have been tested and all are certified as fertile. This is true even with most of the large commercial operations here. Especially with cattle, you can't afford to have a dud running around.

    • @kasie680
      @kasie680 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think it would be cool to have a "handbook" to look at for conformation etc. They have this for horses.. to know bad vs good body conformation. Maybe a good thing to come up with for sheep.. for people getting into the business. Breed standards are a guide, but the breeders and ones that run the sheep for real are the ones that really know which types perform the best or not. I think it's a years of experience thing that can't really be totally explained or written about.

If they brought out 10-12 animals and sold them as a lot (you're bidding for all 12 does) then you're probably buying meat! Those are amazing prices. Would the highest priced ones be going back into purebred flocks for producing next year's top sellers? It would be scary to spend that much on a ram and lose it to an accident or disease before getting any breedings. 😳 (Thanks for translating the prices, for $ maybe just put US next to it, as many other countries use the $ such as Australia, NZ, Canada etc. 😊. We can work out the exchange.) It looks like a great social situation as well. Great work editing.

      Good idea Rebecca i'll do that next time! Yeah these rams all go on to produce rams for next year's sale. So when the rams enter the ring u will often hear the auctioneer announce what ram they are from. For example that £30,000 ram lamb was off the £15,000 Harestanes tup. So that farmer paid £15k for a tup and one lamb off him has doubled his investment. It all goes round in a big circle.

    These bids were in pounds. You had a previous video where the bids were in guineas. What's the difference? I don't mean in currency but in the choice of currency. 💷

      Different breed society rules. Blackies don’t have pedigree palerwork like other breeds either. I’m not sure why they don’t use Guineas but they are a very old breed with lots of different rules to other breeds. 😁

    wow. such handsome rams and lams, the prices are staggering. Cammie, what specific specs are the buyers looking for in the rams and ram lambs that drives the prices so high? I see the differences in body type, but what are the buyers actually preferring in head and body type?

    (Not knowing anything about sheep conformation, only dog conformation) - what my untrained eye sees in the price difference is higher priced have more bone, bigger danglier bits, a very wide rump and wide/deep chest with a prominent breastbone. One thing I noticed when hiking through Hereford was some bulls stood out beyond others because they looked like a caricature off of a butcher's chart. Their dimensions were so "beefy" they looked rather exaggerated and boxy. But I can see in addition to meat/weight value of their offspring, a wide chest and large bones would probably make them more durable as seed-stock. (Less likely to break a leg tupping a ewe).

    Cammy can you please explain again the difference between a tup and a ram. I thought you said a tup was a no nuts and a ram was with nuts. Yet that 45000£ was called a tup. Makes me wonder why some one would pay that price for a chunk of hogget?!

I love this videos because we can see how much money farmers would invest to get new rams or should I say new blood to maintain the quality of the herds!! Thank again for videos and God bless you !!

    Shocked at the purebred ram prices. What are their destination, purebreed breeding farms for ewes of different black face strains from the purchased ram?
    Can't imagine hobby sheep farmers buying these.
    And far too expensive to improve the qualities of the sheep of a farm raising lambs for meat slaughter.
    We still go to the county farm fairs. I always walk through the sheep barns. Can't believe how breeding has changed some of the old breeds in form. The present Suffolks here are monsters, tall at least 50>75 lbs heavier than what our rams weights.
    I believe I heard you mention that you breed your ewes to Texel rams for meat lambs.
    One of our best crosses for meat lambs was Correidale ewe to Suffolk ram. only problem was large head of the Suffolks lambs in first breeding ewes and birthing problems. So first lamb ewes we crossed with Cheviot rams.
    Been watching some of your lambing vids. Very good, you save more than most. Wearing on mind and body in the lambing sheds.

    What do people use blackface rams for? Is it mainly for breeding pure? Or do they cross them? We don't have anything like them here in New Zealand.

    Fun to see another country’s sale. Our prices are so much lower. An exceptional two year old Ram from the best ranch would not go for more than 5000. An average ranch two year old Ram is more like 250 to 500.

    When our kids were competing in 4-H, they would wash their chickens and use Woolite liquid soap in the wash water and a little softener liquid in the rinse, to make the feathers soft and fluffy. To make them fluffier, they'd dry them with a blow dryer on a low heat, so as to not kill the chicken by over heating it! I'd imagine Woolite would work great on sheep's wool to make it clean, soft and fluffy. They'd smell better too, at least for a few minutes!
