The fight scene between Roddy Piper and Keith David is considered one of the greatest in film history. I hear there are some film schools that show it as part of their curriculum.
"I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubblegum." Fun Fact: Roddy Piper, being a married man at the time of filming, refused to take his wedding band off. That's why in several scenes you can see a wedding ring. They Bubblegum Fact: The "bubblegum" line was (sorta) ad-libbed by Roddy Piper. According to director John Carpenter, Piper had previously written the line in his notebook of potential verbal bits during his wrestling career. He shared the notebook with Carpenter, and they agreed that this particular line fit the character and the film perfectly. Piper went on to use it at a wrestling match. They Fight Fact: The big fight sequence was designed, rehearsed and choreographed in the back-yard of director John Carpenter's production office. The fight between Nada (Roddy Piper) and Frank (Keith David) was only supposed to last twenty seconds, but Piper and David decided to fight it out for real, only faking the hits to the face and groin. They rehearsed the fight for three weeks. Carpenter was so impressed he kept the scene intact, which runs five minutes, twenty seconds.
Indeed, one of the greatest fights in film history. Sure it looks a little bit like a WWF brawl, but these guys look like they were smacked around for real. Because they were!
The homeless guy who takes them on a tour is the same actor who played 'Red', the homeless guy in Back to the Future. He is also in John Carpenter's 'The Fog'.
The director, John Carpenter, had approached Roddy Piper sometime after he had competed for the WWE (then WWF) at WrestleMania III in April-May of 1987. When They Live was a hit at the box office, he came back to the WWF In 1989.
Roderick Toombs, aka Rowdy Roddy Piper is Canadian. He is cousins with the Hart family. He was Scottish by ancestry. So it wasn't a lie or character with him being a Scot, just an exaggerated version of himself. They Live is such a relevant movie today, because of the messaging with it. The sci-fi elements aside, so much of this film just hits true. The haves have everything, the have nots have nothing but the scraps and keep having those taken away.
Well, not quite the same time. “Prince of Darkness” came out a year earlier on October 23, 1987. “They Live” opened a year later on November 4, 1988. Both are terrific John Carpenter films. 👍
Greatest fight scene ever put to film. Is it the most technical? No. Best choreographed? No. But it's clear that Keith and Roddy were both extremely passionate about it, and it shows in every second.
You should read the short story this movie is based on, it's called 8 O'Clock in the Morning by Ray Nelson. It's a good read with certain parts where the movie differs, but the premise and story are pretty much the same. One thing the book has that the movie doesn't, a name for these beings, Fascinators. Great reaction! In an interview, Roddy said this is a documentary, not fiction.
The idea behind the long fight scene is to show how hard it is tto show someone the teuth, metaphorically.
The homeless guy who takes them on a tour is the same actor who played 'Red', the homeless guy in Back to the Future. He is also in John Carpenter's 'The Fog'.
