My USMC Brother carried a Colt .38 revolver snub nose in Vietnam. He was told by an officer to turn over the revolver to him. My brother said, “You’ll have to kill me to get it.” My brother kept his revolver. I lost him to Agent Orange poisoning on 30 November 2016. He was only 69. He looked like he was in his late 80’s. I terribly miss him.
So sry for your loss. My mom’s dad was killed in a helicopter crash in Vietnam. She was only a few months old and he was on in country a few days. On agent orange - had a neighbor who had several bouts with cancer. He wasn’t terribly old and had finally decided to stop treatment for pancreatic cancer and let it run its course. He was a very nice man and was always sweet to my wife and children while I worked on the road.
This is very interesting. I've read about guys in the war being sent short .38 revolvers not only from family members and friends, but from the police departments of their hometown. Heard about a man in the 83rd Infantry in Germany who had been sent an S&W Model 10 from the US because his town's PD had extra. I would never have thought them to be very useful, but evidently, I was wrong. I appreciate this man for sharing his story and making me learn something new. Edited for spelling
Pistols were very valued in the Pacific for this reason. Even the Corpsmen and medics carried a pistol. Granted I've also read accounts of docs carrying M1 Carbines.
There were church groups of mothers who would hold drives. Asking people to donate pistols to send to the boys over seas. After getting letters from their sons.
As one guy said, extremely valuable weapon to have in the jungle when enemy could always be a few feet away concealed by heavy overgrowth. This was commonplace in WW2 with a lot of American soldiers from what I understand, many of their fathers and grandfathers were fighting not long ago and those weapons could be considered a good luck charm. In this mans case, it was his blessing.
How awesome a father sending his son a pistol who was off fighting the war! Surprised he was able to receive it my grandma sent her brothers 2 AM radios but never received them.
@@driftcat7076Probably stolen. There was a lot of theft on the docks and in the rear echelon. You can find accounts from europe of combat units coming back from the front and finding every one of their barracks bags cut open and almost everything stolen from them.

Can you imagine how this guy’s dad must’ve felt knowing he was able to give his son something that probably saved his life?
And that he is here telling ud the story ..... fk yeah
He probably never knew
@ИеутНЕМОЙ That would have been in my very next letter to him.
Delusional and fatherless.
+1 dmg 😢
He had 2 father's, Smith and Wesson
Must’ve been awkward conversation when the buddy who was supposed to be guarding him came back.
Plot twist.... His battle buddy never came back. There was no Japanese soldier. 🙂🙂
That was the second person he shot with that .38
@@MBKindell? No really
Why did his buddy run? Marines don't desert one another.

Thank you as well!
I imagine you had a conversation with your foxhole 'buddy' later.
I was thinking that too. "Guarding him" yeah right!
He shot him to
The conversation probably involved that same .38.

Interestingly, Herman Goering carried a Smith and Wesson. 38 as his preferred sidearm.

@@huasohvacthey would’ve been crazy not to carry a gun. The Japanese used Red Cross markings as bullseyes regularly.
