  • Sidechain compression is commonly used in music production and is a familiar effect to fans of artists like Daft Punk, but it can be a bit of a mystery to Cubase beginners. So what is sidechaining (or as it’s sometimes called, ducking music)? It’s all about compression. This video explains how to sidechain and use a sound source to trigger a sound compressor, as well as how to use a compressor for basic compression techniques which will have a very musical impact on your production.

I'd like to know more about how to side-chain effects like reverb or delay. Until watching this video it never even occured to me that would be possible.

This must be the best explanation of how a compressor functions. Also the reminder of on which track to put the sidechaining. I'm using the the compressor you guide through. The music I make is EDM and Chill with a German gothich touch.

User side-chaining very often especially between kick and other subsonic sounds or where I want it to stand out. Really great for vocals in controlling virtually anything to ensure that the vocal remains prominent if that's what I am looking for at the time. I wish all of my plug in's had side-chaining ability built in.

For me the most useful part of the video is the summary at 9.30 mins. I think it's one of those techniques that is so "obvious" and "simple" that when people explain it, it's almost like explaining it to someone who already knows ! Not complaining, I just wish the summary of how to actually do it was at the beginning as well. Overall the video was useful so don't want to come across too moany. 🙂

Great topic but a more detailed point to point tutorial video would be much appreciated. I mix voice overs in Cubase Elements 9.5 and side chain compression might me a useful tool.

Thank you for the awesome video. I was wondering how is the setup for ducking effect with vocals and a delay. I noticed your have stereo delay as insert on the Mono vocal track followed by Compressor. Would be please tell us what are you feeding the compressor as input?
