Toltec Shamanism: The Spiritual Realism | Documentary

  • Interview-documentary of french instructor and writer Paul Degryse, which has been been studying, practicing and teaching a form of Toltec shamanism based on the work of Carlos Castaneda and Don Juan, for almost 30 years.
"In a world where humanity stands in the cultural dead-end of materialism, is there a hope for a new form of spirituality that would be respectful of life, uniting, and truly fulfilling for the human being?"
More than a simple cultural documentary, the metaphysics of shamanism teach us a fundamental understanding of the basic laws and principles of the universe, and how we can use them in a conscious and practical way through the power of intention, to create a life that we really want.
Translated version of original documentary by David Malefoy.

Any time someone says “I have the truth, but the only way to access that truth or that path is through me” they are setting up a base for power - a hierarchy. There is no hierarchy. You can access it along through your connection to all in life and in nature. You are part of that nature. You already carry that knowledge. Careful. What is true for one person’s authentic journey may not fit yours. If uniqueness is in the design of the mind, body, perception and will... why wouldn’t the truth of our reality, our journey or our purposes also fit that unique design? An idea that works for a time may have something good in it for you. Carry it for a time. Be open to letting it go when it no longer fits. Be open to recognizing that when someone else shares their truth, that they are really only sharing there’s and it may or may not be true for you as well. If you carry something for yourself that was only true for someone else, you’ll find only suffering and eventually sickness of the mind, heart spirit or body. Respect others for their truth. Journey with your own.

This dude is the Bruce Lee of Shamanism...eliminate what hinders and use what gets it done. I do not think he is trying to discredit or insult past ways; he, if one pays close attention, pays respect to the old ways, but is trying to get away from all the cliches that a lot of people seem to place more focus on, i.e. the look of a shaman....feathers, drums and so on....the things being sold as the knowledge instead of the knowledge. Does not mean the feathers and all are wrong. He is using what works for current times and problems unique to us caused by our era. I do not think he is the peanut in God's shit, but he speaks some light.

I have always followed the same methodology and coach those who come to me to do the same, it's about the individual and what the individual needs and will learn next. One part of a philosophy, religion, ancient wisdom, maybe all that is needed from that source at this time. Later something else from that same source of information may or may not be needed.
Take what works, leave the rest, be with flexible compassion for self and others. Each is on Their Own journey, right where the have chosen/need to be.
The ego is what trips us all up.
We don't Know, what we Don't know, and to be open to the answers unknown, requires being willing and open to the unknown (not expecting answers from what is known).

I am not so sure about this video. I am organically being initiated into being a Shaman. I was told by another Shaman that because my ancestors were Shamans, I am touched by the spirit that they worshipped. I am a young, vain, and ambitious woman. The only spiritual practice that I have is Buddhism and compassion. Recently, I am intuitively being told to add things to my shrine, like feathers that appeared in my house out of the blue and specific plants. I haven't reached the use of drums yet, but I was a born dancer. From the moment I could walk, I danced and had an immense affinity for music. Shamanism is not a cult; it is not an adventure because you feel empty; it is not a new identity you put on because you are sick of your old one. Shamanism is the oldest form of spirituality that arises from a pure desire to help others...if you have diminished your ego and built the strength to see the truth as it is, have faith that your shamanic way will be shown to you.

What about this video are you unsure of? Not all "shamans" are born into a KNOWN lineage of shamans. Not all healers on this planet carry solely human DNA. We each come with our own medicine, which doesn't require generations of imparted tradition to use. If you have medicine to offer, it is your gift and birthright to do so.

This energy part makes alot of sense to me

    • @Natty183
      @Natty183 ปีที่แล้ว

Yep. We are energy, focused. Toltec shamanism is about learning how to store and use energy in specific ways that lead to freedom. There are very practical exercises you can follow. The best way is to Intend it, store energy and listen until you Know what to do, then do that despite all else. According to Don Juan, that's the best way to do anything.
It takes time to learn this knowledge because it takes unlearning everything Don Juan taught Castaneda to unlearn, and that takes time. Recapitulating is no Fucking joke especially if you decided to experience everything while here..
The best way, in my experience, is to learn through Castaneda's books. The practices are learned through a beautiful, dialectical path when you read them and take the time to understand the inventory Don Juan teaches Castaneda. We are of two minds in this world and to unlearn means to follow a spiral path, especially when trying to accomplish something like Freedom. Also, the way certain things are repeated through the books is important for the process. The entire structure of the books is a shamanic teaching tool.
Ultimately though, I agree with Don Juan, "I'm alone in a hostile universe, and I've learned to say, so be it." When you get to the end, I wouldn't trust anyone lol. 🖖♥️😁

@@kayoualorkyl that's not correct. There is no such a thing gifted, person who is gifted is not because gifted... It's because the person expanded abilities from previous lives and the the experience transferred to this life through the higher self which is the mental body. To be Toltec yes you need to be chosen, but that's because people need to live and see life differently and most people can't do it, they need to go through many life situations to come to a realization.

One of the greatest book series ever written, up there with the bible. I am deeply grateful for "Don Juan's" knowledge. It validates my experience by speaking in a way I can relate.
It's sad the Yaqui tribe was disturbed. That's why you never mention the name or dwelling place of a Mystic. When you give a piece of fresh meat to a ravenous wolf, it will bite your hand to lick the blood. Somehow the white man oppresses.the indigenous peoples yet again.
I think the work is an agglomeration of wisdom teachings, from known and unknown sources, possibly including some hidden illuminati writings. Reading the signs of the times, the anthropology dept became privy to some earth shattering mystical writings from an unbelievable source, really explosive stuff. But with no way to publish it without identifying the source, invented the device of Don (lu)Juan(?) as a symbolic Teacher. This would set Carlos up in his career, and offer plausible deniability.
As to the origin, maybe Olmec as suggested below, and probably older, even Atlantean. As stated in the book, the teaching evolves to address to the spiritual development of the student, vis a vis the old and new Seers. When or where exactly does truth begin? However, the books' 'feel' reminds me of Yoga. So that would be 10s of thousands of years old.
Ultimately, origin time and location is irrelevant, or rather, omni relevant and ever present, as the knowledge comes from spirit.
We just accept the teaching for the gift it is: a LIVING awareness which the Seer, as an agent of Spirit, identifies itself speaking to itself within us in a superluminal moment. This is way beyond Anthropology, Guru sexy fun times, any book, or even death.

Very well put. Notice how a lot of people respond to this literature with venom, stating its plagiarised or made up etc, which immediately shows us that they have completely missed the point of the teachings themselves, had they been paying attention!
To become engrossed in an author and his exploits, when the authenticity of the material is evident in the fact that if one carries out the instruction, they get the results, is a folly which proves that the majority of humanity's vibration is exactly how the teachings say they are.
I've been blessed, or cursed, with having had many OBE's throughout my life, I didn't chose it or earn it or want it particularly as it is terrifying, but there have been enough of them experiences for it to be a 'known' as opposed to a 'belief'. I think there's definitely some truth in the view that we are energetically hooked to one another, and this is how the consensus reality becomes defined and seemingly 'objective' to us.
I've experimented with power plants and found that 'reason' and 'will' are completely separate ways of being. In my day to day mindset I'm competent with basic maths and English, and have at least an average memory, but when the effect of the power plant kicks in, I'm completely incapable of simple arithmetic, reading is possible but with a lot of focus required to bother, and if I partake in a quiz of general knowledge, of which I'd normally be average, I'm reduced to a bumbling fool finding humour in the most bizarre places and forgetting the questions. But, when experiencing this state for the first time with my brother, we experienced direct telepathy. He literally verbally answered a string of questions or propositions I made with thought alone, it went on for around 10 mins, and had to be broken willfully as it became disturbing! We realised that without the monkey chatter we tell ourselves in our heads, there really is just one channel we are all on, the feeling of 'euphoria' IS the body acting on knowns without language. Language just brings doubt, divides everything up and kills its essence.
The irony of trying to encapsulate this meaning using the faulty vehicle of language itself.🤣

Shamanism is a unique form of living with unique idealogy where importance is given to lebaration of oneself from the web of memories of the past.
Yes we identify our selves as personification of our past memories , past achievements Both in knowledge and in materialistic possessions.
So we are what, as to what we think as to what we are. We may think we are intelligent, good mannered, and well looking (beautiful) and a lot more. But if we ask someone as to what he thinks about us, he may say we are dull, ignorant, ugly person.
So with in our close circle, we can not see what we feel about ourselves. We can understand as to how we are erring or we are wrong.
So our memories deceive us by making us to think we are superior and so on. And what we have learnt may be defective or incomplete.
So to understand what we are we have to follow basics of shamanism, which brings us to 'spirit' level. Our conscience in tune with universal conscience level. This is minimum requirement for a meaningful life.
Thanks for your efforts to show the realities of life, universe, conscience.

Richard de Mille wrote two books debunking Castaneda’s work, prepared timelines of the first three books showing that their events couldn’t plausibly have occurred in the order stated. In addition to that, Don Juan’s “teachings” bear very little resemblance to actual Yaqui Indian religious beliefs. Don Juan’s manner changes from book to book. In Teachings he is stern, but in later books that cover much of the same time period he makes jokes and uses English colloquialisms, even though Castaneda says he spoke only Spanish. At one point Don Juan makes a pun on “pulling your leg” that would make sense only if he were speaking English

@@peripheralsapien8491 One of my main interests is the relation between shamanism and schizophrenia, spiritual experience and psychosis. Inpatient goal is to 1) establish safety and then 2) prepare for reintegration into society. In a medical model, this usually means a psych med regiment to control symptoms and then social work stuff like a place to live and income, and some therapy to build coping skills. As someone who has traveled very deeply into the psyche using shamanic means I think I bring an openness to the unit where my goal isn't to make a symptom or atypical experience disappear but to listen to it and consider what is trying to be communicated. I think the general disconnection of our society from the roots of human life and culture (nature, myth, rituals that bind us to each other) creates a certain freedom but also more vulnerability to dysfunctional modes of being. I think at times an over confidence in science derived concepts and a lack of direct spiritual experience can leave some people with a label synonymous with insane for more time and width than is prudent. Some people on the ward have truly broken psyches due to an early rape or similar tragic situation. But I wonder how many could be shamans if their psychological crisis had taken place within a shamanic culture that had the concepts and elders to orient onto a path of growth and healing. I suppose that's what I am trying to create or recreate when I am on the floor.

Making the richest actually very insecure with the rest of humanity and or wanting only a particular type of lover near them. Called the bronzers.

I watched the video as I wanted to understand the components of toltec teaching. Following some observations that popped up during watching it. Some are quite formal, sorry for that. 😔
Trying to convey an idea or a topic always works better if the one doing it, is not using specific terms. Because people tend to focus on those terms in order to understand them and not so much on the bigger picture. In fact it becomes to feel like a brand that needs selling. Not my kind of thinking. Just an observation I made in the last century.
A shaman is a person that has been declared by the community to be a shaman. If a person decides for themselves to become involved than they are called a shamanic practisioner. Big difference.
I also don't understand the approach. Experience have shown that people, after having "learned" the basics, can perfectly well and without any assistance work towards harmony in their life. In being in contact with their animals and teachers they will through that, transform their way of thinking and with that their way of doing. Often very quickly.
Hence I system like the one described on the video could be seen by some as a money making machine. To use a term of the video, the undoing will be done between spirit and oneself. Our spirits know us best and know what is needed to come into harmony. With this I come to the next observation.
Duality. If you compare this with that you live in a dualistic system. We all do. Shamanic teaching is based on the believe that everything is one and connected. Hence if someone experiences something bad, it can be seen as an impulse to change the cause. In fact, that's the way your spirits often show us in our journeys.
The ones who point out duality are often the ones who live totally in it. It's hard not to and I find that humour helps a lot in dealing with it and going into our non ego heart.
A last word to duality. I don't believe that duality describes it adequately. It shows to extremes but on the whole we live in a complex world that contains often numerous dualities.
Lastly, I am really surprised that journeying is not mentioned. Well, at least I can't remember it being mentioned. Maybe some term was used I didn't know. Journeying is the healing part which is totally free, all inclusive and often instant. What a claim for shamanism.
Final word which is a personal dislike. I don't like it when people writes articles or make videos to explain something and than start to talk about there wares (books, films, courses, music). I feel cheated as it should have been made clear right at the start.
Oops, another personal thing. I don't like it when pretty young women and muscular men appear for whatever reason where there could also be shown pictures of nature or normal people of all ages.

LOL! Go research Carlos Castenada! Watch the documentary where they interview his wife and son! He ended up being a cult leader who dead an awful death and made millions off another culture. He's probably not the best bench mark to use. And I say this not only as someone who read all his books, but as an anthropologist and practicing Shaman myself

What is wrong with "cult"? Cult is a group of people doing spiritual practices. All religions and spiritual sects are cults. Many of them in the east actually prefer to call themselves cult rather than this new word "religion".
Using the word "cult" as a negative thing is just a new modern thing that US media started to make its use common.

@@savelives3763 Semantics aside, would you at least agree that many of these groups brainwash, mislead and take advantage of people usually under the direction of a charismatic individual who is usually a conman or at the best honestly mistaken and deceived himself. A lot of discernment and caution is required, which usually means that one is a very educated and highly intelligent individual. One would be better served by self study and self development rather than a group. I've read all of Castaneda's works and I found them to be very worthwhile but following an individual and trusting him with your spiritual and mental integrity is something I would not take lightly at all. I would advise you all to be extremely careful with these practices, like Don Juan said the Toltec practices are powerful but also deadly. He did not recommend them at all, read the books.

There is no bench mark Ryan and this whole field is a mine field where one risks body, mind and soul. Who are you going to trust, some guy who calls himself "shaman"? I would urge everyone to be extremely cautious. Extremely cautious.
As far as Castaneda's works, there is a lot of good information there, a great read, and like the Buddha said "follow the teaching not the teacher". If Carlos failed ultimately that is on him. The books themselves would give one a lot of caution, this is not stuff that you play with. Don Juan himself said that the old toltecs ultimately did not go on a good route and cautions against their teachings and techniques. None of this stuff is safe, especially nowadays with all this new age nonsense floating around.

@@truthabouttheworld3186 at the end of the day, everyone's journey is a combination of inner guru and outer guru. There is so much anti-guru mindset going on specificly in the west. They say , one should only rely on himself. Well, the problem is actually exactly here saying "himself". Who is self? This individual ego identity only? Essentially everything is a teacher or guru. Even if we just do selfstudy by relying to online sources, it means we relied to some gurus. Everything is guru. There is no inner and outer. All is one!
Seeing and creating this boundary of in and out in the first place is the source of ignorance.
